    Description: Because predicted relationship (epsilon directly varies with V squared) between auroral electron energy flux (epsilon) and the inferred acceleration potential drop (V) for accelerated Maxwellian distributions was favorably tested by other using sounding rocket data for the limiting case of eVE 1 (where Ec is the characteristic energy of the accelerated Maxwellian distribution) and for a single inverted-V observed by the Injun 5 satellite, data from Atmosphere D were used to extend these studies over the range .2 eV/Ec 5 and for a wide range of latitudes and local times on both the nightside and the dayside. Results show good agreement with the full accelerated Maxwellian model. An analytical approximation to the electron energy flux was derived which better describes the data over the range .2 eV/Ec approximated 3. Analyses of individual energy spectra at small and large pitch angles through well-defined inverted-V structures suggest that the altitude of the inferred potential drop maximizes near the center of the inverted-V's.

    Description: An ion mass spectrometer having a cylindrical E bar x B bar analyzer and either a cylindrical or spherical electrostatic analyzer is described. The instrument has two nested channels and a postacceleration between the electrostatic and E bar x B bar analyzers for wide ranges of energy and mass responses. It is noted that the dual-channel construction not only doubles the data acquisition rate but also permits a reversal of the electrostatic field orientation in the inner channel for lighter ions. The outer channel is then optimized for ions of medium to high mass numbers, resulting in increased mass resolution for such heavy ions. When combined with a cylindrical E bar x B bar analyzer, a 90-deg-deflection angle spherical electrostatic analyzer provides an extremely wide viewing angle. The angular distribution of ions can be derived from such geometry if a position-sensitive resistive anode or a detector array is used at the exit aperture. Details on the principles of operation, the instrument design, and calibration are presented.

    Description: The Dynamics Explorer A High-Altitude Plasma Instrument (HAPI) will make differential measurements of the velocity-space distributions of electrons and positive ions over the energy/charge range of 5 eV to 32 keV. Five identical analyzers, each making simultaneous measurements of electrons and positive ions at 64 possible energy levels, will have viewing angles of 45, 78, 90, 102, and 135 deg relative to the spacecraft spin axis. The HAPI data will contribute to the overall Dynamics Explorer science objectives, particularly by providing information on the hot-plasma effects of the coupling of energy, mass, and momentum within the earth's atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere.

    Description: An apparatus for producing a structure in outer space from rolls of prepunched ribbon or sheet material that are transported from the earth to the apparatus located in outer space is described. The apparatus spins the space structure similar to a spider spinning a web utilizing the prepunched ribbon material. The prepunched ribbon material is fed through the apparatus and is shaped into a predetermined channel-shaped configuration. Trusses are punched out of the ribbon and are bent downwardly and attached to a track which normally is a previously laid sheet of material. The size of the overall space structure may be increased by merely attaching an additional roll of sheet material to the apparatus.

    Description: The Low Altitude Plasma Instrument on the Dynamics Explorer-B spacecraft provides high resolution velocity space measurements of positive ions and electrons from 5 eV to 32 keV and a monitor of electrons with energies above 35 keV. It consists of an array of 15 parabolic electrostatic analyzers spanning 180 deg in angle and two Geiger-Mueller counters mounted on a one-degree of freedom scan platform. The platform is controlled by a magnetometer that allows placement of the array to selected angles with respect to the magnetic field. Each parabolic analyzer simultaneously measures electrons and positive ions. The temporal resolution and energy range of the measurements and the detector complement to be sampled are programmable by ground command

    Description: Characteristics of studies on board the Shuttle involving the interaction of particle beams with the atmosphere and the ionosphere, and the effects of the beams on the electrical potential of the platform, are discussed. Noting that the Shuttle allows greater weight and power demands by scientific payloads than previous satellite launches, the OSS-1 Vehicle Charging and Potential experiment and the Spacelab 1 Particle Accelerator and Phenomena Induced by Charged Particle Beams are described. Instrumentation details are provided, including charge and current probes, the Spherical Retarding Potential Analyzer, the Fast Pulse Electron Generator, and digital control and interface units. The SEPAC equipment, which comprises an electron beam accelerator, and MPD plasma jet, and diagnostic units are detailed, and operating procedures and experiment objectives are outlined.

    Description: Attempts were made to determine the role of the interplanetary magnetic field in controlling: (1) particle acceleration processes in the earth's polar cap; (2) plasma convection patterns at high latitudes; and, (3) the topology of magnetic field lines in the earth's polar cusps. The primary result of the study on polar-cap particle acceleration regions was that they tend to occur in only one polar cap at a time, and that they occur in the hemisphere for which the magnetospheric tail-lobe field lines have solar-magnetospheric x components that are antiparallel to those of the interplanetary and tail-lobe magnetic field. Southward-directed interplanetary magnetic fields give rise to broad convection throats which cover several hours of local time across the dayside cleft. Under such conditions, solar-wind plasma is channeled efficiently through the polar cusps to populate the plasma mantle and dayside boundary layer. On the other hand, the appearance of strong northward components in the interplanetary magnetic field result in a very constricted throat, resulting in inefficient plasma entry at the cusps by diffusion processes.

    Description: The overall objective of the particle environment monitor (PEM) is to provide comprehensive measurements of both local and global energy inputs into the earth's atmosphere by charged particles and Joule dissipation using a carefully integrated set of instruments. PEM consists of four instruments: the atmospheric X-ray imaging spectrometer (AXIS), the high-energy particle spectrometer (HEPS), the medium-energy particle spectrometer (MEPS), and the vector magnetometer (VMAG). AXIS provides global scale images and energy spectra of 3- to 100-keV bremsstrahlung X-rays produced by electron precipitation into the atmosphere. HEPS and MEPS provide in situ measurements of precipitating electrons in the energy range from 1 eV to 5 MeV and protons in the energy range from 1 eV to 150 MeV. Particles in this energy range deposit their energy in the atmosphere at altitudes extending from several hundred kilometers down to as low as about 30 km. VMAG provides the magnetic field direction needed to indicate and interpret the locations and intensities of ionospheric and field-aligned currents as well as providing a reference for the particle measurements. Examples of data acquired early in the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) mission are presented.
