Beschreibung: A conceptual design was developed for a microwave radiometer spacecraft (MRS) using a large passive reflector, microwave radiometer, and advanced control concepts soil moisture mapping from microwave sensing for global crop forecasting. Mission requirements and tradeoffs were defined, and major subsystems (structural, electromagnetic surface, and attitude control) conceptually designed. An overview of the mission and a summary of the study results are presented.

Beschreibung: The mission, instrumentation, and design concepts for microwave radiometer satellites for continuous crop condition forecasting and monitoring on a global basis are described. Soil moisture affects both crop growth and the dielectric properties of the soil, and can be quantified by analysis of reflected radiance passively received by orbiting spacecraft. A dedicated satellite reading a swath 200 km across, with 1 km and 1 K temperature resolution, could track the time-varying changes of solid moisture, sea ice, and water surface temperature. Launched by the Shuttle into an interim orbit, a boost would place the satellite in a 400 or 700 km orbit. Resolution requirements indicate a 45-725 m diam antenna, with 70 dB gain, operating at frequencies of 1.08, 2.03, and 4.95 GHz to ensure atmospheric transparency. Alternative structural concepts include either double-layer tetrahedral or single-layer geodesic trusses as the basic structural members. An analysis of the electrostatic positioning of the parabolic antenna membrane is outlined.

Beschreibung: The value of systems analysis and engineering is aptly demonstrated by the work on Large Space Antennas (LSA) by the NASA Langley Spacecraft Analysis Branch. This work was accomplished over the last half-decade by augmenting traditional system engineering, analysis, and design techniques with computer-aided engineering (CAE) techniques using the Langley-developed Interactive Design and Evaluation of Advanced Spacecraft (IDEAS) system. This report chronicles the research highlights and special systems analyses that focused the LSA work on deployable truss antennas. It notes developmental trends toward greater use of CAE techniques in their design and analysis. A look to the future envisions the application of improved systems analysis capabilities to advanced space systems such as an advanced space station or to lunar and Martian missions and human habitats.

Beschreibung: Results are presented of dynamic structural analyses of 75 and 300 kW versions of a solar dynamic (SD) power supply for the Space Station (MSS). The SD is being seriously considered as an alternative to solar panels due to lower areal and mass requirements and higher efficiencies. The functioning principle is to use parabolic concentrators to focus sunlight on a heat engine to boil liquids to drive a turbine. Potential problems are foreseen in terms of the torques which would be experienced by the MSS and the subsequent orbital stability effects. The stability would be altered by changing aerodynmaic drag, altered moment of inertia and angular momentum and the altered center of mass location. The problem is exacerbated by the need to first equip the MSS with solar panels while the SD technology is developed. The analysis shows that the attitude control system will need to be redesigned and resized to accommodate MSS growth with either power system. The effects of the rotating parts of the SD system can be minimized, but further studies are required to determine the effects on the pointing accuracy of the SD, which must be 10 times as precise as that needed by a photovoltaic array.

Beschreibung: Integrated spacecraft/lander combinations have been designed to provide a support structure for thermal and galactic radiation shielding for three initial lunar habitat concepts. Integrating the support structure with the habitat reduces the logistics requirements for the implantation of the initial base. The designs are simple, make use of existing technologies, and minimize the amount of lunar surface preparation and crew activity. The design facilitates continued use of all elements in the development of a permanent lunar base and precludes the need for an entirely different structure of larger volume and increased complexity of implantation. This design philosophy, coupled with the reduced logistics, increases overall cost effectiveness.

Beschreibung: A general overview of a conceptual design for a Microwave Radiometer Spacecraft using a large passive reflector, microwave radiometers, and advanced control concepts is presented. The mission requirements, developed around high resolution, large area mapping of soil moisture for global crop forecasting, are reviewed. These mission requirements, along with system design requirements, dictate the need for a reflector in excess of 700 meters in diameter. Conceptual designs for supporting structures and subsystems, including attitude and surface control, are summarized.

Beschreibung: This paper summarizes some of the future civil missions requiring large space systems technologies. Antenna, collector, and reflector missions are generalized to define a similar set of system requirements and characteristics. Although many concepts exist for both deployable and space assemblable large structures, four technically mature deployable concepts are reviewed. Two of these concepts are probably applicable to only antenna/collector missions, whereas the other two employ continuous trusses which can be configured for a broad range of planar, linear, or curved structures. Finally, technology problems or needs associated with large deployable systems are reviewed to highlight additional research and development, both analytical and experimental, required to reduce mission risk.

Beschreibung: Remote sensing missions have been synthesized which could contribute significantly to the understanding of global environmental parameters. Instruments capable of sensing important land and sea parameters are combined with a large antenna designed to passively quantify surface emitted radiation at several wavelengths. A conceptual design for this large deployable antenna has been developed. All subsystems required to make the antenna an autonomous spacecraft have been conceptually designed. The entire package, including necessary orbit transfer propulsion, is folded to package within the Space Transportation System (STS) cargo bay. After separation the antenna, its integral feed mast, radiometer receivers, power system, and other instruments are automatically deployed and transferred to the operational orbit. The design resulted in an antenna with a major antenna dimension of 120 meters, weighting 7650 kilograms, and operating at an altitude of 700 kilometers.

Notizen: Abstract A new regio- and stereoselective method for the synthesis ofE-alkenylchloralanes based on Cp2TiCl2-catalyzed hydroalumination of disubstituted acetylenes by diisobutylaluminum chloride was developed. Hydrolysis and deuterolysis of organoaluminum compounds lead to the correspondingZ-olefins, and cross-coupling with ally) halides in the presence of Pd(Ph3P)4 results in the formation ofcis-4,5-disubstituted 1,4-dienes.
