Notizen: Abstract Thymine-requiring strains of Escherichia coli suppress nonsense and frameshift mutants of T4 phage. We proposed that these mutants make errors during translation because of an imbalance in folate metabolism. A thymine-requiring strain grown under suppressing conditions has elevated levels of reduced folates. We tested the effect of either mutational blocks or the inhibition of various steps in folate biosynthesis on suppression. Conditions which prevent the accumulation of 5-methyl tetrahydrofolate inhibit suppression, suggesting that elevated levels of this folate are required for suppression. Furthermore, conditions that result in an accumulation in dihydrofolate inhibit suppression.

Notizen: The carbon-13 chemical shifts were assigned for all ring positions in cyclohexanone and 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone with H, F, Cl, Br, I, MeO, MeS, MeSe, Me2N, Me or tert-butyl in the 2-position. The substituent-induced shifts were calculated by difference from unsubstituted cyclohexanone or 4-tert-butylcyclohexanone. Both stereoisomers (cis and trans) were available for the 4-tert-butylcyclohexanones in all but one case. Comparison of the substituent-induced shifts for the cis (equatorial 2-substituent) and trans (axial 2-substituent) isomers provides stereochemical insight into the interactions between the 2-substituent and the carbonyl group that bring about non-additivity of the substituent effects. In the 2-equatorial isomer, the dipole-dipole interaction between the functional groups causes non-additivities for the C-2 carbon that depend largely on the electronegativity of the 2-substituent. In the 2-axial isomer, hyperconjugation or other orbital interactions between the groups cause non-additivities for the C-2 carbon that depend largely on the polarizability in addition to the electronegativity of the 2-substituent.

Beschreibung: A technique for calculating the effects of on-orbit loads on the structural dynamics of the International Space Station is developed on the basis of MSC/NASTRAN superelement solution sequences. The complexity of the Space Station program with its multiple configurations, international partners, and contractors is stressed, and the impact of this complexity on the dynamic-load analysis process is indicated. The MSC/NASTRAN-based approach is outlined, and its application to two versions of the Permanent Manned Capability configuration is described in detail, including component mode synthesis, GFSC/FLAME coupled-loads analysis (with components from the system FEM model or from the Work Package), and ISI/MATRIX-X generation of closed-loop forcing functions. The results of these sample analyses are presented in extensive tables and graphs and briefly characterized.
