Notizen: The Wurtz-type coupling of a number of representative classes of substituted dichlorosilane monomers was investigated in considerable detail. Low temperature polymerization techniques, including ultrasonic activation, were also studied. Similarly, the effect of dipolar additives on the polymerization process was examined. The conclusions drawn from these studies provide some insight into the selection of useful polymerization conditions for the conversion of various monomer types into linear high polymers.

Notizen: The crystal orientation distribution in injection-molded bars made from several polypropylene compounds has been investigated using pole figure analysis. The fillers used were glass fibers, chalk, and talc, and some compounds contained one filler and others contained glass fibers plus one or both of the others. All compounds showed strong orientation in the skin with the b-axis of the monoclinic crystals lying preferentially normal to the flow direction and in many cases parallel to the normal to the bar face. This normal direction orientation was very strong in compounds containing talc and is probably caused by crystals forming with their (010) planes on the talc platelet faces, which align themselves parallel to the mold face. Strong orientation persists into the interior of the moldings containing talc, whereas in the other compounds, the orientation at intermediate depths is much less pronounced than in the skin. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Beschreibung: Since September 1991, the ERS-1 SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) has collected approximately 170 frames of ocean imagery on 28 passes over the western Gulf Stream in support of ESA experiment US8-2c. SAR signatures of the north wall are seen on nearly all passes, with modulation depth varying from 3% to 35% for 100 m samples. Many small and mesoscale circulation features associated with the Stream are evident. The detailed form of the signature varies considerably, however. Narrow bright or dark linear features appear to follow streamlines, and on one occasion a strong dark line was associated with an in situ measurement of a sharp current shear. Similarly, larger spatial scale changes in backscatter over the Stream were associated with in situ measurements of atmospheric stability transitions. Physical explanations for the narrow features are not so obvious. However, the accumulation of surfactants along converging current boundaries or local short wave straining and breaking appear plausible. These preliminary results strongly suggest that a wide swath (approximately 500 km) SAR with at least 100 m resolution would be a useful adjunct to existing satellite AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) imagery.

Beschreibung: The paper addresses the subject of the interaction of positively and negatively charged bodies with the terrestrial ionosphere at low earth orbit altitudes. Data from two recent sounding rocket flights are used to establish that the current collected by exposed conductors biassed positively at up to 45kV relative to the ionospheric plasma generally follow predictions which account for strong control of electron flow by the geomagnetic field. If the biased structure is in the vicinity of disturbing influences such as an emitted charged particle beam, or locally enhanced gas pressure, then large deviations from the space-charge-limited return currents occur.

Beschreibung: The paper discusses some of the results of vehicle electrical potential from recent sounding rocket experiments involving charging of a space platform by both electron beam emission and by the application of differential bias between elements of the platform. Conclusions are presented that are applicable to the experimental parameters of the CHARGE-2 and SPEAR-1 payloads. The currents collected by HV biased collectors in the sphere show strong magnetic limiting and are close to the values predicted by Parker and Murphy (1967). No volume breakdown was observed above 100 km altitude by exposing voltages up to 45 kV to the ionosphere in the SPEAR-1 payload. The release of gas at flow rates typical of ACS systems can provide sufficient plasma to electronically neutralize space platforms biased at either positive or negative potentials.

Beschreibung: Although the deployment distance of the TSS-1 tethered satellite was only about 1 percent of nominal, experiments to study the current collection and vehicle charging effects at low voltages were performed. We present measurements of Orbiter charging resulting from electron beam emission from the Orbiter, currents in the TSS system with and without electron beam emissions, and the effects of Orbiter thrusters on charging and currents. Generally, charging induced by beam emission was limited to a few volts, though during times with low ambient plasma density the Orbiter was charged up to 80 V. Thrusters are seen to enhance Orbiter charging during beam emission, and reduce ion current collection at other times.
