    Description: Entry heating flight data and wind tunnel data on the side fuselage and payload bay door, Z = 400 and 440 trace aft of X/L=0.2, for the first five flights of the Space Shuttle Orbiter are presented. The heating rate data are reviewed in terms of normalized film heat transfer coefficients as a function of angle of attack, Mach number, and normal shock Reynolds number. The surface heatings rates and temperatures were obtained by the JSC NONLIN/INVERSE computer program. Time history plots of the surface heating rates and temperatures are outlined.

    Description: A unified analysis of the Shuttle Orbiter aerothermodynamic environment and thermal protection system performance is presented using the Space Transportation System development flight data. Comparisons of predicted and measured temperatures and heating rates along the Orbiter lower windward fuselage centerline and lower wing 50 percent and 80 percent semi-spans are discussed. The results of this study indicate lower than predicted heating on windward fuselage surface but higher heating on the nose cap and 50 percent semi-span wing panels.

    Description: The aerothermodynamic performance of the Space Shuttle Orbiter during reentry is assessed from the collected data of the first five flights. The entry heating data is restricted to the upper leeside surface centerline of the orbiter. Surface heating and temperature data are analyzed by a variety of computer programs and presented in graphic form. Wind tunnel test data is also included.

    Description: A procedure for estimating relative sensitivities in Space Shuttle Orbiter entry heating due to variations from nominal flight parameters is presented. Ballpark values are provided for assessing heating changes caused by off-nominal variations in anglle of attack and Reynolds number for laminar flow conditions. Also, a procedure for scaling heating data obtained on subscale models tested at low-enthalpy wind-tunnel test conditions to high-enthalpy flight conditions using simplified flow analysis techniques is presented and verified with flight and wind-tunnel data. In addition, data are presented illustrating that a significant increase in heating was experienced on the fifth Orbiter flight. The increase was possibly caused by changes in the catalytic properties of the Orbiter thermal protection system surface.
