Notes: Summary The chemical structure of propafenone (P) and certain experimental findings suggest that this antiarrhythmic compound could possess beta-blocking properties. To evaluate the clinical relevance of the latter cardiovascular effects of P during exercise were studied. After oral administration of P 150 and 300 mg insolution, six healthy volunteers were subjected to graded exercise. These doses of P, which are usually effective against arrhythmias, decreased exercise-induced tachycardia, whereas the systolic blood pressure was lowered but only at rest, and the diastolic pressure was slightly raised. However, taking into account dose ratio, and the intensity and duration of the reduction in exercise tachycardia, this effect of P was only about 5|X% at its maximum compared to propranolol and similar active beta-blocking compounds. The reduction in heart rate produced by P was not correlated with the plasma level nor did it show dose dependency, in contrast to beta-blocking agents, and also in contrast to its electrophysiological effects on the PQ interval.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamic effect on platelet activation of a single 800 mg oral dose of BM 13.177 have been investigated in 8 male volunteers. BM 13.177 disappeared from plasma with a terminal elimination half-life of 0.85 h. 52% of the dose was excreted unchanged in urine. Assuming complete absorption, total clearance was calculated to be 741.3 ml/min and renal celearance to range from 310.4 to 396.9 ml/min. The pharmacodynamic studies were performed ex vivo/in vitro in platelets stimulated either with methyl mercury chloride or with U 46619. Methyl mercury chloride is a platelet activator that requires TXA2 formation from endogenous arachidonic acid, whereas U 46619 is a stable PGH2 analogue and thromboxane mimetic at the platelet TXA2/PGH2 receptor. A close correlation between the plasma concentration-time profile of BM 13.177 and inhibition of platelet shape change or aggregation was demonstrated.

Description: The objectives of the experiment are discussed. These objectives were: (1) measure the thermophysical properties of the Martian surface on a global scale; (2) isolate large-scale irregularities in the global picture; and (3) isolate small-scale hot or cold spots on the surface.

Description: The results of the preliminary analysis of the Mariner 9 radiometer data are: (1) Gross thermal characteristics of Mars agreed qualitatively with those observed in 1969: (2) a dust storm changed the thermal picture of Mars radically with average dayside temperatures lower by about 20K than without the dust storm; (3) over large-scale physiographic visual features, no univocal correlation between albedo and thermal inertia seems to exist, and (4) surface particle sizes derived from observed thermal inertias vary between 0.006 cm and 0.5 cm.

Description: Radiometric measurements of Phobos at 10 and 20 microns show that the surface is covered by a material whose conductivity is extremely low, around .000001 cal per cm per sec per deg K. It is concluded that Phobos is covered with a layer of dust at least 1 mm thick.

Description: A two-channel IR radiometer similar to that carried on Mariners 6 and 7 was included on Mariner 9 in order to extend and improve the surface coverage and spatial resolution obtained on the earlier flights. The minimum brightness temperature observed by the Mariner 9 radiometer over the shrinking south polar cap, slightly after Martian southern midsummer, is at least 25 K above the temperature that would correspond to frozen carbon dioxide.

Description: The spectral energy distribution and size of the source of infrared radiation from Herschel 36 in M8 have been investigated. Radiation from the diffuse source in the vicinity of the hourglass has been measured. It is shown that a significant fraction of the 10-microns flux comes from an unresolved source centered on Herschel 36. Other stars in M8 have also been investigated as potential sources of infrared radiation.

Description: The infrared radiometer on Mariner 10 measured the thermal emission from the planet with a spatial resolution element as small as 40 kilometers in a broad wavelength band centered at 45 micrometers. The minimum brightness temperature (near local midnight) in these near-equatorial scans was 100 K. Along the track observed, the temperature declined steadily from local sunset to near midnight, behaving as would be expected for a homogeneous, porous material with a thermal inertia only slightly larger than that of the moon. From near midnight to dawn, however, the temperature fluctuated over a range of about 10 K.

Description: The intensity of emission at 45 micrometers, measured with high spatial resolution along a single crossing of the Venus disk, is presented. On the average, the observed darkening toward the limb varies nearly linearly with the cosine of the emission angle. The brightness temperature, extrapolated to normal emission, is 255 K. The limb darkening curve, interpreted in a linear approximation, implies that the atmosphere is quite opaque, with an absorption coefficient of 0.24 per kilometer. Changes in curvature present in the limb darkening curve suggest the existence of thermal inhomogeneities with scale comparable to that of the dark markings shown by ultraviolet images.
