    Description: A sounding rocket experiment was performed in June 1976, in which the solar constant was observed simultaneously outside the earth's atmosphere by three types of absolute cavity radiometers (the Primary Absolute Cavity Radiometer and two Active Cavity Radiometers, Type IV) and duplicates of Nimbus 6 ERB/ESP (Earth Radiation Budget/Eclectic Satellite Pyrheliometer) solar channels. The preliminary average solar constant result from the cavity radiometers is 1367 W/sq m with an uncertainty of less than plus or minus 0.5% in SI units. The duplicate ERB channel 3 on the rocket gave a value of 1389 W/sq m, which agreed exactly with the Nimbus 6 ERB channel 3 measurement made simultaneously with the rocket flight.

    Description: Standard values of the solar constant and extraterrestrial solar spectrum are reviewed. In the visible and near UV, this listing of average irradiance over 100-A bandwidths at 50-A intervals was found to be inadequate for many applications. A more detailed spectrum obtained from solar scans with a Perkin-Elmer, Model 112 monochromator was found to give sufficient detail. A normalization program was developed to make the Perkin-Elmer curve agree with the standard curve. Values of extraterrestrial solar spectral irradiance at 1-A intervals in the range 3000-6100 A have been derived. The results are presented in tabular form and as spectral charts.

    Description: Spectral irradiance measurements at high altitude were made using a variety of monochromators and filter radiometers. The results of all recent high-altitude measurements have been critically examined by an ad hoc committee on 'Solar Electromagnetic Radiation.' The committee has proposed standard values for engineering use for the solar constant and the solar spectrum. These values are presented and also the reasons for recommending their acceptance. Detailed comparisons are made between the revised spectral irradiance values and those which had been widely accepted in earlier years. New values are computed for frequently cited astrophysical quantities which are derived from the solar constant and the solar spectrum. The spectrum is extended to 10 A in the X-ray range and to 10 m in the microwave range. The revised value of the solar constant is 1.94 cal per sq cm per min. The proposed standard solar spectrum shows significant differences from other curves throughout the spectral range.

A solar constant value of 1.94 cal/sq cm min or 135.3 mW/sq cm was proposed. A detailed spectral irradiance table is given for the range of 0.12 to 1000 microns.

    Description: Measurements made at high altitudes from aircraft have resulted in the establishment of standard values of the solar constant and extraterrestrial solar spectral irradiance. These standard values and other solar spectral curves are described. The problem of possible variations of the solar constant and solar spectrum and their influence on the earth-atmosphere system and weather related phenomena is examined. It is shown that the solar energy input parameters should be determined with considerably greater accuracy and precision than has been possible. An instrument package designed as a compact, low weight solar energy monitor in space (SEMIS) is described.
