    Notes: Two block copolymers of isotactic polypropylene and 1,4 polybutadiene were synthesized using techniques involving a transformation from anionic to Ziegler-Natta polymerization mechanisms. The yield of block copolymer was about fifteen percent (weight basis) in both polymerizations, the remainder being unreacted polybutadiene from the first block synthesis. Molecular characterization experiments and model reactions were consistent with a block-like structure for the copolymers; definitive evidence for the proposed molecular structure was obtained through transmission electron microscopy which clearly revealed microphase-separated morphologies characteristic of block copolymers.

    Notes: Using the preirradiation technique a kinetic study of the grafting of the 4-vinyl pyridine (V4P) and an aliphatic ammonium monomer (ALAM) onto the copolymer film of ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) has been performed. The influence of dose, temperature, and concentration of monomer, reticular agent, and inhibitor were investigated. The results are discussed on the basis of the interactions between monomer diffusibility and viscosity of the medium. The characteristics of some membranes were determined. Their applicability to the recovery of acid by dialysis is demonstrated.

    Notes: Use of promoter dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) in conjunction with initiator normal butyllithium has resulted in rapid and controllable ring-opening polymerization of 1,3,5-tris-(3′,3′,3′-trifluoro-propyl)1,3,5-trimethylcyclotrisiloxane at 40°C; monomer consumption rate can be varied by at least four orders of magnitude depending on the ratio of promoter-to-initiator concentrations. Compared to the sodium counterion also studied here, the lithium initiator slows the backbiting alkyl-reactions which cause degradation of polymer to cyclics containing four or more fluoroal-kylsiloxy units. This previously uninvestigated polymerization methodology offers greater opportunity for capturing high, nonequilibrium polymer yield of this fluoroalkylsiloxane through appropriately timed termination of the reaction. To facilitate this optimization, a kinetic model of the polymerization was developed by solving the isothermal, constant density rate expressions for a two-step, series mechanism. The solution to the coupled system of nonhomogeneous ordinary differential equations is obtained by matrix variation of parameters. The rate constants were determined by appropriate kinetic analysis of the experimental data obtained for polymer and cyclics concentrations as a function of time under various conditions. This results in a quantitative model capable of predicting optimum polymerization time to maximize the yield of poly(3,3,3-trifluoropropylmethylsiloxane) at ca. 85-90%.

    Notes: The synthesis and characterization of novel surfaces composed of polyacrolein microspheres covalently bonded onto polyethylene films are described. These surfaces were prepared through a sequence of reactions carried out onto polyethylene films in order to form primary amine groups at the w position. Polyacrolein microspheres in water were then covalently bonded to these modified polyethylene surfaces. The binding between the microspheres and the modified surfaces is due to the interaction between the aldehyde groups of the microspheres and the amine groups of the modified surfaces to form the polyvalent Schiff base bonds. Fourier transform-infrared/attenuated total reflection, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, contact angle measurements, and scanning electron microscopy have been used for the characterization of the modified polyethylene surfaces.

    Notes: It is shown quantitatively that the formation of holes through the skin of membranes, prepared by the quick immersion in water of polyetherimides in solution in N-methylpyrrolidone, is governed by the solvent mobility. The surface pattern observed by videomicroscopy exhibits a characteristic distance between neighbouring holes (≃5 μm) which is a linear function of D-1s; Ds is the solvent diffusion coefficient in the polymeric solution, measured using a pulsedfield gradient NMR technique. The dependence of this distance on the solvent concentration in water is also characterized.

    Notes: Coagulum formation in emulsion polymerization of tribromostyrene and also in its copolymerization with styrene has been shown to be due to thermal polymerization. The latter takes place in the monomer reservoirs, even in the absence of radical generating initiators, converting them into sticky particles which then form the undesired coagulum. The coagulum formation phenomenon can thus be remedied by reducing the thermal initiation level through a semi-batch emulsion polymerization method, by lowering the polymerization temperature, and reduction of the collision frequency of monomer/polymer particles.

    Notes: Over the temperature range of 20 to 90°C, the equilibrium solubility of methane or argon in a star-branched polystyrene-polybutadiene (SB) block copolymer can be reliably estimated from a volume-fraction-weighted average of the homopolymer solubilities; the value of heat of solution for SB block copolymer lies between the two values associated with the constituent homopolymers. Diffusion coefficients for gases in the block copolymer are bracketed by the homopolymer values over the range of temperature employed, but the activation energies for diffusion in SB are higher than either of the homopolymer values. The anomalous temperature dependence and the inability of a computer simulation to reproduce experimental diffusion coefficients supported the concept of a temperature-dependent restriction on chain mobility in the polybutadiene regions of the block copolymer. This β factor embodies the relative reduction in the rate of gas diffusion through the B regions of the copolymer compared to B homopolymer; β has a value of about 2-3 at room temperature but decreases to unity when the polystyrene chains become mobile at the polystyrene Tg.

    Notes: Changes in crystalline structure of high-tenacity ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fabric brought on by ballistic impact from a small projectile were determined by X-ray diffractometry. A suitable X-ray diffraction method that averages out the fiber orientation effects in the diffraction pattern was used. The Spectra 1000™ polyethylene fabrics were successfully characterized in terms of both the predominant orthorhombic and the minor monoclinic crystal content. Crystallinity values for the undamaged fabric are consistent from sample to sample and show an average orthorhombic fraction of 0.61 and an average monoclinic fraction of 0.04. Fabric damage by the projectile impact results in either an increase in monoclinic fraction, attributed to recrystallization at temperatures nearing the normal polyethylene melting point, or disappearance of monoclinic material as that temperature is exceeded. The latter predominates where ballistic penetration is complete. However, actual melting need not be involved: Transformation to the hexagonal (“rotator”) phase and the disappearance of the monoclinic phase could have occurred rather than true melting. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
