Beschreibung: Limb radiance profiles for Venus in the 600 to 700 per cm spectral band are derived for two sets of model atmospheres. The radiance computations make use of a strong line transmission model. Both an extreme variability atmospheric model set and a normal variability set are derived and discussed, as are the effects of clouds and surface pressure uncertainties. A horizon locator concept based on the derived radiance profiles is presented, through its implementation in a conceptual systems design. The locator concept developed shows promise of locating the Venus limb to better than 2 km accuracy at the horizon, or 0.05 deg for a 500-km orbit.

Beschreibung: Data obtained from approximately 7500 ultraviolet television pictures are used to compile a celescope catalog of ultraviolet observations. This catalog lists the magnitude as observed in each of celescope's four ultraviolet color bands, the standard deviations of the observed ultraviolet magnitudes, positions, identifications, and ground based magnitudes, colors, and spectral types for approximately 5000 stars.

Beschreibung: Examples taken from the S-054 X-ray telescope observations made during the first Skylab mission show the hot coronal plasma tracing the configuration of the magnetic fields. The high spectral resolution and sensitivity of the instrument has enabled the following two facts to be more firmly established: (1) that the 'quiet homogeneous corona' is in fact highly structured and that the structures observed appear to be the results of dispersed active region magnetic fields; and (2) that numerous bright points are distributed randomly on the disk. Their presence at high latitudes may play a role in solar cycle models. In addition, the capability of Skylab for studying time evolution has enabled the restructuring of coronal features to be seen at times of high activity, indicating a restructuring of the coronal magnetic fields.

Beschreibung: New measurements of the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn at 3.1- and 8.6-mm wavelengths are given. The temperatures reported for the planets at 3.1-mm wavelength are higher than previous measurements in this wavelength range and change the interpretation of some planetary spectra. For Mercury, it is found that the mean brightness temperature is independent of wavelength and that a temperature-dependent thermal conductivity is not required to match the observations. In the case of Mars, the spectrum is shown to rise in the millimeter region, as simple models predict. For Jupiter, the need to recalculate the spectrum with recent models is demonstrated. The flux density scale proposed by Dent (1972) has been revised according to a more accurate determination of the millimeter brightness temperature of Jupiter.

Beschreibung: A sample of celescope results is studied. Most of the sample stars belong to the Orion and Vela regions. Stars with visual excess E(B-V) less than 0.05 are selected in order to derive relationships of intrinsic color index versus spectral type. The resulting intrinsic color-color relations are compared with existing blanketed and unblanketed model calculations. Finally, the preceding intrinsic relations are utilized to derive some results on interstellar extinction. Owing to the rather large scatter in the celescope data, the Vela stars give the more significant results because their visible excess E(B-V) is, in general, larger than that for the Orion stars.

Beschreibung: Observations of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were made at 3.1 mm and 8.6 mm wavelengths with a 16-foot radio telescope between March and August, 1971. Absolute brightness temperature data are given. All errors are one standard deviation and include uncertainties in antenna gain calibration. The solar and lunar temperatures are in excellent agreement with published observations. The planetary measurements at 3.1 mm are consistently higher than previous results. The implications of higher temperatures with respect to existing atmospheric and surface models are discussed.

Beschreibung: An age of 3.33 (plus or minus 0.05) b.y. was obtained for Apollo 15 sample 15555 by argon-40-argon-39 dating. The age of rock 15555, a basalt from the rim of Hadley Rille, establishes an upper limit to the age of the rille. The basalt flows filling the Hadley Rille section of the Imbrium basin postdate the formation of the basin - as measured by the Apollo 14 samples of the Fra Mauro formation - by at least 500 m.y. Therefore, the mare basalts cannot be simple impact melts but rather must result from some igneous activity on the moon.

Beschreibung: The v = 1,J = 1 to 0 rotational transition of SiO at 43.1 GHz has been detected in the direction of Becklin's star in the Orion Nebula, and in the M-type star W Hya. In Orion two velocity components are observed, one (the stronger) at a radial velocity of 17 km/sec, the other at -7 km/sec; in W Hya a single line is observed at 39 km/sec. In each case a line at the same radial velocity has been observed at 86.2 GHz in the v = 1,J = 2 to 1 transition, so that the presence of vibrationally excited SiO would seem to be confirmed beyond a reasonable doubt. In the v = 1 state, the photon fluxes of the J = 2 to 1 and 1 to 0 transitions are about equal, suggesting saturated masers occupying the same region of space.
