Notizen: Abstract The preparation of a phenylalanine analogue containing an azido group and its incorporation into dipeptides is described. Peptides modified in this way are taken up into barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) scutella via the previously characterized peptide-transport system. Photoactivation of modified peptides in the presence of isolated scutella resulted in irreversible inhibition of peptide uptake in a concentration-dependent manner. Transport of other solutes which share a common mechanism of energy coupling, but which are transported via distinct carriers, was not inhibited after photo-derivatization of scutella with the modified peptides. Derivatization of isolated scutellar tissue with a 14C-labelled peptide analogue, resulted in incorporation of label into two proteins of Mr = 54000 and 41000. Scutellar tissue from early-germinating seeds, which do not show active peptide uptake, did not incorporate label into these polypeptides. It is concluded that these proteins are components of the barley peptide-transport system.

Beschreibung: The results of the Trapped Radiation Effects Panel for the Space Environmental Effects on Materials Workshop are presented. The needs of the space community for new data regarding effects of the space environment on materials, including electronics are listed. A series of questions asked of each of the panels at the workshop are addressed. Areas of research which should be pursued to satisfy the requirements for better knowledge of the environment and better understanding of the effects of the energetic charged particle environment on new materials and advanced electronics technology are suggested.

Beschreibung: Data recorded by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, Tiros and P-78-1 satellites for the CDAW 6 event on March 22, 1979, have been compared with a statistical model of precipitating electron fluxes. Comparisons have been made on both an orbit-by-orbit basis and on a global basis by sorting and binning the data by AE index, invariant latitude, and magnetic local time in a manner similar to which the model was generated. It is concluded that the model flux agrees with the data to within a factor of two, although small features and the exact locations of features are not consistently reproduced. In addition, the latitude of highest electron precipitation usually occurs about 3 deg more poleward in the model than in the data. This discrepancy is attributed to ring current inflation of the storm time magnetosphere.

Beschreibung: Three suprathermal ion detectors stationed on the moon were used to detect a region of plasma flowing antisunward along the ordered field lines of the geomagnetic tail, exterior to the plasma sheet. The particle flow displays an integral flux, a bulk velocity, temperatures, and number densities uniquely different from the other particle regimes traversed by the moon. No consistent deviation in the field was found to correspond with the occurrence of the events, which have an angular distribution extending between 50 and 100 deg and a spatial distribution over a wide region in both the Y sub sm and Z sub sm directions. The duration of observable particles varies widely between tail passages, with an apparent correlation between the number of hours of observation and the Kp index averages over these times. It is proposed that these particles may have entered through the cusp region.

Beschreibung: The reflight of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS-1R) was carried aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia on February 22, 1996. After deploying a day later than planned, the satellite almost reached its full deployed distance before the tether broke. Data was collected for over 5 hours during deployment out to a distance of 19.7 km. Maximum emf attained during deployment was 3700 V while the maximum current achieved was just under 0.5 A. The current collected was factors of 2 to 4 greater than the predictions of the conventional Parker-Murphy theory. The microscopic view of the collection process at the satellite showed exotic behavior with the existence of 100 - 200 eV suprathermal electrons and significant spin phase modulation of the electron fluxes. Although the data set acquired from TSS- 1R was considerably less than planned, the quality of the data allows one of the main goals of the mission to be met--characterizing the system I-V response. A "quick look" assessment of the data has already shown that an understanding of the TSS-1R electrodynamic behavior will require modification of the standard picture of current collection in space plasmas
