Notes: Dielectric relaxation spectroscopic studies of sheet molding compound from 400 Hz to 100 kHz reveal the relaxation processes that exist in this material. The frequency dependence of SMC is presented and analyzed in terms of different relaxation process models. A transition map of SMC is presented.

Notes: It has been determined that preload and cyclic amplitude have significant effect on the results of dynamic mechanical measurements of tan δ. To illustrate these effects on composites, a particular type of sheet molding compound (SMC-R50) was used in this study. In addition to the effects of preload and cycle amplitude, the effects of frequency, and creep prior to dynamic mechanical testing were also investigated.

Description: The efficiency of chain sampling is examined through matching of operating characteristics (OC) curves of chain sampling plans (ChSP) with single and double sampling plans. In particular, the operating characteristics of some ChSP-0, 3 and 1, 3 as well as ChSP-0, 4 and 1, 4 are presented, where the number pairs represent the first and the second cumulative acceptance numbers. The fact that the ChSP procedure uses cumulative results from two or more samples and that the parameters can be varied to produce a wide variety of operating characteristics raises the question whether it may be possible for such plans to provide a given protection with less inspection than with single or double sampling plans. The operating ratio values reported illustrate the possibilities of matching single and double sampling plans with ChSP. It is shown that chain sampling plans provide improved efficiency over single and double sampling plans having substantially the same operating characteristics.

Description: A further generalization of the family of 'two-stage' chain sampling inspection plans is developed - viz, the use of different sample sizes in the two stages. Evaluation of the operating characteristics is accomplished by the Markov chain approach of the earlier work, modified to account for the different sample sizes. Markov chains for a number of plans are illustrated and several algebraic solutions are developed. Since these plans involve a variable amount of sampling, an evaluation of the average sampling number (ASN) is developed. A number of OC curves and ASN curves are presented. Some comparisons with plans having only one sample size are presented and indicate that improved discrimination is achieved by the two-sample-size plans.
