Notes: Summary We review here the present knowledge about the pathway of import and assembly of porin into mitochondria and compare it to those of other mitochondrial proteins. Porin, like all outer mitochondrial membrane proteins studied so far is made as a precursor without a cleavble ‘signal’ sequence; thus targeting information must reside in the mature sequence. At least part of this information appears to be located at the amino-terminal end of the molecule. Transport into mitochondria can occur post-translationally. In a first step, the porin precursor is specifically recognized on the mitochondrial surface by a protease sensitive receptor. In a second step, porin precursor inserts partially into the outer membrane. This step is mediated by a component of the import machinery common to the import pathways of precursor proteins destined for other mitochondrial subcompartments. Finally, porin is assembled to produce the functional oligomeric form of an integral membrane protein wich is characterized by its extreme protease resistance.

Description: A method of calibrating solar extreme ultraviolet spectrographs in space using coronal emission lines of known relative intensity is presented and demonstrated. This approach is useful for recalibrating orbiting instruments that may be subject to degradation during extended periods of operation. The calibration results are insensitive to the physical distribution of emitting plasma in any likely solar coronal source. It is suggested that this technique may be useful for calibration of spectrographs used in the study of laboratory plasmas.

Description: On the Space Shuttle's third flight, scientific instruments will study the electromagnetic environment with charging and electron beams. Beam plasma discharge will be studied. The plasma diagnostics package contains electromagnetic and particle sensors to study the ionosphere. An attempt will be made to establish a more accurate base of solar UV irradiance measurements with an absolute error of 10 percent or less over the wavelength region 120-400 nm. The solar flare X-ray polarimeter will observe flare X-rays emitted between 5 and 30 keV and measure their polarization as a function of time and photon energy. A photopolarimeter will help study zodiacal light, and interplanetary dust will be sampled by a section of thick aluminum foil. Plant seedlings will be grown to research the effect of near-zero gravity on lignification. A thermal canister experiment will help determine whether instruments can be maintained at a fixed temperature under varying thermal loads.
