Description / Table of Contents: A Laser-Interferometer for Non-contacting Measurements of Displacements in the Range of NanometersA prototype laser-interferometer with a computer-aided control and evaluation system was developed and attached to a commercial tensile testing equipment for testing. With microhardness indentations as markers it is possible to determine displacement changes with a resolution of about one nanometer. The capabilities of this test system are demonstrated e.g. by measurements of the static Young's modulus, the determination of the crack opening behaviour and the coefficient of thermal expansion of Cu-specimens.

Notes: A cementable endosteal blade implant has been developed and evaluated. Inherent in the design are the following factors: minimization of stress concentrators, ease of implantation, and high resistance to loosening. Other potential advantages of this design as compared with conventional endosteal blade implants include reduced hazards of postoperative infection and reduced likelihood of metallic corrosion.Six conventional endosteal implants and six cementable implants were installed in steer mandibles using standard dental surgical techniques and Simplexbrand methyl methacrylate bone cement. They were loaded in uniaxial compression at a loading rate of 0.0122 in./min. The stiffness (S), deformation at 900-lb load (D900), proportional limit (PL), and load at 0.04 in. deformation (L0.04) were calculated for each test. The cementable design showed a twofold increase in stiffness, only 17% of the deformation at 900 lb, more than twice the proportional limit, and at least twice the load at 0.04 in. deformation when compared with similar values for the conventional endosteal implants. This study reveals that, in addition to being unstable in bone, conventional endosteal implants are also unstable when used with acrylic bone cement. The new design should eliminate most of the problems associated with endosteal blade implantation.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of galvanized and unalloyed steel tubes in drinking water of different hardness and increased neutral salt contentThe corrosion of galvanized and unalloyed steel tubes in drinking water of different hardness was studied at the Rheinau water works, Mannheim. The criteria to describe the influence of the water quality parameters were the decrease of the metallic zinc layer, the composition of the corrosion products and a visual qualification of the coatings. The main parameters influencing zinc corrosion are pH-value and flowrate. Comparison with other data shows no significant effect of buffer intensity and neutral salt concentration. The layer of corrosionproducts in unalloyed steel tubes showed qualitative and quantitative differences with different hardness. The most important effect can be seen in the different contents of calcite in the coating. Low buffer capacity decreased the quality of the corrosion product layer. The results lead to the conclusion, that softening should he limitated to a certain level, otherwise corrosion problems will increase.

Notes: Comparisons were made of changes in molecular weight and in tensile strength of regenerated cellulose after exposure to 40% KOH at 90°C., for varying lengths of time. In the absence of air, both parameters decreased in a fairly consistent manner. In the presence of air, an initial steeper drop was followed by an irregular up-and-down pattern. The theory is advanced that the increase in tensile strength was caused by increased crystallinity.

Notes: When effect of the substrate is nullified, resiliency can be defined as a function of strain, time, and humidity. Determination of improvement in the immediate, or rapid, tensile recovery readily delineates differences due to chemical modifications. Delayed recovery is usually less improved than immediate. Crosslinking cotton with dimethylolethyleneurea (DMEU) increases tensile strain recovery as the number of crosslinks increase, reduces dependency of recovery upon external strain, and produces maximum recovery at about 65% R.H. Noncrosslinking treatments produce limited increases in tensile strain recovery. Measurements on yarns crosslinked with DMEU and then hydrolyzed indicate that incalculably few residual links may contribute to tensile recovery. N-Methylol-N'-methylethyleneurea treated cotton displays physical blocking and water swelling which aid recovery. Oleoyl chloride esterified cellulose has tensile recovery probably due to molecular entanglements. Its delayed or viscoelastic recovery is the most improved with immediate recovery being the least improved. The higher the moisture regain, the greater tensile modulus reduction under wet conditions. Crosslinking with DMEU under dry conditions lessens this reduction in modulus. Improvements in the tensile recovery of strain and energy, for all samples and with varied conditions of humidity and strain, correspond linearly with unit slope.

Notes: The composition of crosslinked polyester-urethanes has been varied by adjusting the ratio of ester to urethane groups. The crosslinking density of these materials has been varied by changes in the polyester functionality. The polyester-urethanes have been subjected to solvent extraction, wherein it was found that at high crosslinking densities, the solubility of the polymers is unaffected by the ester-urethane ratio. At low crosslinking densities, solubility increases slightly with increasing urethane concentration. The solubility was also found to increase with decreasing crosslinking density. Data obtained from isothermal heat aging and thermogravimetric analysis, both carried out in air and in inert atmosphere, indicate that thermal stability increases with increasing ester/urethane ratio and is independent of crosslinking density where the ester/urethane ratio is held constant. In addition, data obtained from heat aging and thermogravimetric analysis have indicated that decomposition of the samples occurs as rapidly in inert atmosphere as in air, indicating that the decomposition occurs chiefly by a nonoxidative mechanism.
