    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion inspection on pipelines with shearographyPipelines can be inspected quickly and reliably on inner corrosion by means of laser shearography. During pressure change in the pipe shearography measures all strain concentrations on the surface of the pipe. As corrosion leads to local wall thinnings inside the pipes these areas will expand more than non corroded areas and thus be indicated by shearography from the outside of the pipe. In this paper important features and conditions are described for application of this technique for inspection in power plants. It is reported about experience on practical inspection tasks. Latest developments enable numerical data processing and graphical and coloured data presentation for easier defect recognition.
    Notes: Mit Lasershearografie können Rohrleitungen schnell und zuverlässig auf innenliegende Korrosionsstellen und Fehler überprüft werden. Dabei werden alle Stellen an der Rohroberfläche angezeigt, die bei einer Innendruckbelastung gegenüber ihrer Umgebung erhöhte Biegedehnungswerte aufweisen. Die wichtigsten Eigenschaften und Randbedingungen für den Einsatz des Verfahrens werden dargestellt. Es wird über Erfahrungen bei praktischen Prüfeinsätzen in Kraftwerken berichtet und verschiedene Einsatzmöglichkeiten im Kraftwerksbereich werden aufgezeigt. Außerdem werden neue Entwicklungen dieser Prüftechnik vorgestellt, die eine einfachere und zuverlässigere Fehlerkennung durch numerische Datenaufbereitung und grafische und farbliche Darstellungen gewährleisten.

    Notes: Polyesters of the formula, [(OR)n—O—CO—C(CH3)2—N=N—C(CH3)2—CO]m, where (OR)n are poly(ethylene oxide), Poly(propylene oxide), or PTHF units, were used to prepare block copolymers with styrene. Ester and ether groups were cleaved with HI, NaOCH3, and diisobutylaluminum hydride. The resulting polystyrene is telechelic with two COOH and OH groups, respectively. The number of styrene blocks per polymer molecule is 3-4.

    Notes: The reaction of ethylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 3,6-dioxaoctane-1,8-diol (triethylene glycol), poly(ethylene oxide)s with M̄n = 300,1000 and 3000, or with poly(propylene oxide)s with M̄n = 425 and 2000 in excess with AIBN leads to the corresponding bis(hydroxyalkyl) 2,2′-azodiisobutyrates (1a-i). These initiators are suited to synthesize telechelics. With equimolar amounts of AIBN and 3-oxapentane-1,5-diol (diethylene glycol), poly(ethylene oxide)s with M̄n = 300, 1000 and 12000, poly(propylene oxide) with M̄n = 425, or with poly(tetrahydrofuran) with M̄n = 1000 and 2000 polymeric azoinitiators of structure 2 are formed. Blockcopolymers may be synthesized by means of these polymeric azocompounds.

    Notes: Spectrophotometric binding studies were undertaken on the interaction of neutral red with native and heat-denatured, sonicated, calf thymus DNA in a 0.2M ionic strength buffer containing Tris-sodium acetate-potassium chloride at 25°C. The pKA of neutral red was found to be 6.81. At pH 5 the binding of protonated neutral red was complicated even at low concentration ratios of dye to DNA. In the pH range 7.5-8.5 the tight binding process could be studied and it was found that both protonated and free base species of neutral red significantly bind with DNA having association constants (in terms of polynucleotide phosphate) of 5.99 × 103 M-1 and 0.136 × 103 M-1, respectively, for native DNA and 7.48 × 103 M-1 and 0.938 × 103 M-1, respectively, for denatured DNA. The pKA value of the neutral red-DNA complexes were 8.46 for native DNA and 7.72 for denatured DNA. These results are discussed in terms of possible binding mechanisms.

    Notes: The conformational states of single-stranded calf thymus DNA were probed using the tmeperature-jump kinetic technique. A rapid decrease in transmission at 260 nm followed by a broad relaxation spectrum was observed for single-stranded DNA at 0.15M KCI, pH, 6.5 at 25°. The relaxation spectrum could also be detected as a hydrogen ion release. Sonicated samples of 103,000 daltons showed identical relaxation kinetics as unsonicated samples. The relaxation kinetics were studied as a function of temperature, pH, and salt concentration and could be interpreted as representing the melting of short, isolated folded segments. The rapid process that could not be kinetically resolved is interpreted as single-strand unstacking. Upon the addition of excess MgCl2 at pH 7.0, a hydrogen ion release from single-stranded DNA was observed that was 3.5 times greater than that observed for a comparable sample of native DNA. Evidence is presented which indicates that charge-pairs exist in folded segments that are A-T rich. There was no kinetic evidence of structures in single-stranded DNA other than single-stranded stacking and short isolated folded regions.
