Notes: Electron spin measurement of the local Cu++ concentrations have been performed in different cation exchange membranes by comparison with reference frozen aqueous solutions of Cu++ salts. Comparison of the obtained values with the average chemical concentrations has therefore permitted direct evidence of microphase separation in these systems. Local concentrations approximately four times larger than average chemical concentrations have been found. Information about composition of this ion-containing phase has also been obtained from changes in local Cu++ concentrations versus water content.

Notes: Perfluorinated ionomer membranes can absorb large amounts of water. DSC experiments show the existence of exothermic or endothermic peaks for water contents larger than 8 wt % at room temperature in Nafion 1200 EW in the acid form. Changes in the number of mobile protons versus temperature have been measured by NMR spectroscopy. A desorption process with an activation energy of 6 kcal/mol is proposed during the sample cooling. Such an explanation quantitatively explains both the DSC and NMR results and is also consistent with the other results obtained from mechanical experiments, low-temperature sorption isotherms, and ESR spectroscopy.

Notes: Water mobility in an acid Nafion® membrane containing ca. 15% water by weight has been studied by high-resolution neutron quasielastic scattering (NQES). The data are analyzed in terms of simple models. On a scale of ca. 10 Å, the water molecules move practically as freely as in bulk water, but their long-range motion is much more hindered. These results are important for an understanding of the relation between the microstructure and the macroscopic properties of these membranes. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed NQES study of the water-polymer interaction problem.
