Notes: The following reactions of pyrylium salts with amines are described: (1)bis(pyrylium salts) with amines; (2) diamines with pyrylium salts; and (3) bis(pyrylium salts) with diamines. Both (1) and (2) give bis(pyridinium salts) in high yields, and (3) gives the corresponding polymers which are isolated and characterized. This procedure was applied to cationic bis(pyrylium salts) to give cationic dimers and polymers, and further to zwitterionic bis(pyrylium salts) to yield the corresponding zwitterionic dimers and polymers.

Notes: The reaction of dithiocarbamate salts with α-haloketones is extended to (i) dithiocarbamate salts with bis(α-haloketones), (ii) bis(dithiocarbamate salts) with α-haloketones, and (iii) bis(dithiocarbamate salts) with bis(α-haloketones). Both (i) and (ii) give bis([3H]-thiazole-2thiazole-2-thiones) in high yields, and (iii) gives the corresponding polymers which are described and characterized.

Notes: A vanadium steel Lane plate with nickel coating and low grade steel screws were removed from a patient 53 years postimplantation. Corrosion of the parts was extreme, but the reaction in the surrounding tissues was surprisingly quiescent under the circumstances. By today's standards, the materials, their application, and their performance were totally unacceptable. However, the biological system tolerated this “insult” well.

Notes: A new porous vitreous carbon material under development for use in orthopedic applications was investigated. Specimens were machined to appropriate sizes and fractured in one of the following modes: compression, cantilevered bending, or axial torsion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine surface and internal features. Characteristics of a brittle, glassy material were noted. Findings included internal voids which appeared as craters, patches of whiskerlike fibrils, and edge impurities. Numerous microcracks caused by mechanical shaping and handling were the most remarkable structural defects. Pore channels which would allow bony in growth ranged in size from 50-500 μm with the majority between 200 and 300 μm. This study of porous vitreous carbon points to the need for stricter quality control in manufacturing, alternative methods for shaping and handling, and careful consideration in design and usage of a brittle material with marginal limits of safety for biomedical applications.

Notes: In this study, density, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusivity were measured experimentally along the lengths of human cadaveric femora. Fresh and dry bone samples were selected from both male and female specimens, and for different age groups varying between44 and 73 years old. Measured values for specific heat vary between 1.14 and 2.37 J/gm°C; forthermal conductivities the range is from 0.16 to 0.34 W/m°C; and for thermal diffusivities the range is from 0.10 to 0.23 cm2/sec, depending on whether the bone samples were freshor dry, cancellous or cortical. The experimental results are presented in non-dimensional coordinates and are compared with the few other data available in the literature.
