    Notes: Data are presented which characterize the behavior of fibers produced from polypropylene polymers under experimental conditions designed to investigate the effect of extrusion temperature on various properties. At high extrusion temperatures molecular weight degradation takes place which results in a lowering of the average molecular weight and a narrowing of the molecular weight distribution. The orientation and crystallinity characteristics of the undrawn fibers also vary with extrusion temperature. The crystal structure of the fibers shows a gradual transformation from a highly ordered monoclinic crystal structure to paracrystalline structure of lower orientation as the extrusion temperature is increased. Drawing of the undrawn fibers of various molecular weights has been characterized by dynamic stress-strain curves and followed by sonic velocity measurements, the results of which suggest in agreement with other methods that the reduction in crystallinity during drawing is a function of the undrawn crystal structure, the drawing rate, and the drawing temperature. Drawn fibers produced from 21 isotactic polymers have been compared for tensile strength behavior by selecting fibers at the same average molecular weight but with different molecular weight distributions and also with similar molecular weight distributions but at different average molecular weights. These comparisons have shown that at a common draw ratio the tensile strengths of the fibers are lower for those fibers with broad molecular weight distributions when compared to fibers with narrow molecular weight distributions at same average molecular weight. The data also show that the tensile strengths of the fibers of the same molecular weight distribution and crystal structure increase with increased average molecular weight.

    Notes: Rates of decrease in crystallinity, as measured by x-ray crystallinity index, have been followed throughout periodate oxidations of cotton cellulose and formaldehyde-treated cotton celluloses. Depending upon the conditions under which the agent was introduced, a low level of formaldehyde crosslinks exerted small or large retardation on the rate of decrease of crystallinity index. The extents of decrystallization per unit of oxidation of cotton and crosslinked cotton celluloses are substantially smaller in the initial phase of oxidation than in the later stage, indicative of preferential oxidative attack in the early stage on chain segments of predominantly noncrystalline regions. Relative to unmodified cotton, crosslinked cotton celluloses are characterized by more extensive decrystallization per unit of oxidation in the early phase of oxidative attack (to approx. 40%). From these data, supplemented by electron micrographs and solubilities in cupriethylenediamine hydroxide, uniformity of distribution of crosslinks is shown to increase in this series of formaldehyde-modified cotton celluloses (at the same level of agent) in the order: form D cotton (nonaqueous treatment) 〈 form W cotton (aqueous treatment) 〈 form V cotton (vapor treatment). Effectiveness of crosslinking (i. e., composite of number of linkages, ratio of intermolecular to intramolecular bonds, low degree of polymerization in crosslink) is indicated to increase from form W to form D to form V cotton.

    Notes: Polyurethanes containing the polyether backbone were found to give superior adhesives at cryogenic temperatures as compared to epoxy resins. However, the adhesives showed poor performance at 250 and 400°F. The adhesives were prepared from 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDI)-terminated polyether polyols and cured with 3,3′-dichloro-4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (MOCA, du Pont). The addition of free TDI causes an increase in elevated temperature strength when an equivalent amount of MOCA was used.

    Notes: The distribution of formaldehyde crosslinks in cotton cellulose has been followed by electron micrographic analyses of fiber cross-sections and by kinetic analyses of rates of reactions of formaldehyde with cotton. Rapid and slow phases of the crosslinking reactions are indicated to extents which vary with the specific processes of reaction. A wide range in heterogeneity of distribution of crosslinks is found among the compositions investigated, the most heterogeneous distribution appearing in a high concentration of crosslinks in peripheral regions of the fiber. It is evident that additional substantial differences among the formaldehyde-crosslinked cottons are due to different extents of reaction of agent per accessible hydroxyl group.

    Notes: Polyglycidyl esters of aromatic polycarboxylic acids were evaluated as adhesives for aluminum over the temperature range -453 to +400°F. The esters were cured either with amines or anhydrides. Cyclopentanetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride was found to be a superior curing agent and gave adhesives with tensile shear strengths in excess of 1000 psi at 400°F.

The difficulties introduced in static and impact testing by stress concentration and strain inhomogeneity are considered. The need for two-point strain measurement in regions of homogeneous strain is emphasized. A low inertia strain-measuring system utilizing magnetic tape is described as applied to tensile tests at jaw speeds of 1 to 100 ft./sec.
