    Notes: Five organic crosslinked materials have been studied for compression properties at room temperature. Their static behavior (0.02 in./min.) and dynamic behavior (up to 1300 in./min.) have been measured as a function of the nature of the material or of its apparent density. The materials with- stand a higher stress, 30 to 40%, and show a higher modulus of elasticity, about 100%, when subjected to rapid loading. Resistance to fracture is a linear function of the apparent density at two speeds. Equipment as well as methods are described.

    Notes: The necessity for oven post-curing Viton A vulcanizates is explained in the following way: The formation of crosslinks is accompanied by the elimination of HF from the polymer. In the subsequent reaction of HF with the magnesium oxide present as acid acceptor water is formed which acts to inhibit the full development of cure unless it is removed from the vicinity of the polymer by post-curing in an open system. Measurement of the rate of elimination of water from the polymer serves as a method of following the development of crosslinking during cure. Approximately two moles of water, derived from four moles of hydrogen fluoride, are associated with the use of one mole of diamine curing agent. This ratio is confirmed by independent estimates of the relationship of crosslinking density to curing agent level based on measurements of swollen compression moduli.

    Notes: Cinnamic acid esters of poly(vinyl alcohol) and of cellulose are insolubilized by ultraviolet radiation. This response may be increased by the inclusion of simple organic compounds such as Crystal Violet carbinol and Michler's ketone. A method of measuring this response (in terms of a sensitivity value, S) based upon photographic sensitometry has been devised. Preliminary study indicates that an increase in S is accompanied by an increase in response to the longer wavelengths of light.

    Notes: A homologous series of polyoxymethylene di-isopropyl ethers [R—O(CH2O)n—R] from n = 1 through n = 6 has been prepared and characterized by gas/liquid partition chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and other techniques. The acid hydrolyses of the series indicated no rate dependence on chain length between the endgroups, which suggests that the rate of hydrolysis is not dependent on the remaining intermediate group. The rate constants and activation energy are reported, as well as those from the literature. The conclusion is reached that hydrolytic degradation studies of formaldehyde-crosslinked cellulose cannot yield information on the chain lengths of the crosslinks.

    Notes: To elucidate mechanisms in electroinitiated polymerization reactions a comparison was conducted between ultraviolet (UV) photoinitiation and electroinitiation of N-vinyl phthalimide with zinc chloride as a catalyst. Both methods give low yields of a complex polymer product. A detailed analysis, infrared (IR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), elemental, and molecular weight, conducted on the polymeric products, indicated that phthalimide ring opening was occurring and that complex mixtures of poly(N-vinyl phthalimide) derivatives were formed. Both initiation methods gave comparable results, which further indicated mechanistic similarity between photo-and electroinitiation in these donor-acceptor charge transfer polymerizations.

    Notes: The intrinsic viscosity [η] of dilute solutions of poly(1,4-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPPT) is found to depend strongly on sulfuric acid strength, exhibiting a maximum at about 100% H2SO4. This behavior instigated measurements of [η] and light scattering from dilute solutions of unfractionated PPPT in concentrated (≈96%) and 100% H2SO4. From [η] and weight-average molecular weight Mw relationships, Mark-Houwink exponents a were determined to be 1.36 in 96.6% and 1.62 in 100.2 ± 0.2% H2SO4, indicating that the PPPT molecule can undergo considerable expansion in 100% H2SO4. For the case of 100% H2SO4, a noticeable polyelectrolyte effect is observed in the reduced viscosity versus concentration curves. This result suggests that the repulsive charges generated along the PPPT backbone may be responsible for the change in configuration of PPPT upon increasing the acid strength from 96.6% to 100% H2SO4. It is pointed out that there is considerable experimental difficulty in measuring consistent values of Mw, and this may be the reason for the variation among published data.

    Notes: Thermal degradation behavior of poly(1,3-phenylene isophthalamide) and poly(chloro-2,4-phenylene isophthalamide) was investigated with the aid of some appropriate model compounds. The pyrolysis products of these materials were identified by gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (GC/FT-IR), and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The residual chars were characterized by IR spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was applied to study the effect of end-group concentration on the degradation characteristics of the two polyamides. Kinetic parameters that describe the thermal degradation of the polyamides were also evaluated by TGA. The results of this investigation suggest that the thermal decomposition of these aromatic polyamides involves homolytic as well as hydrolytic cleavages of the amide units.
