Notes: The relative inhibitory effects of acetaldehyde, acetone, 1-acetoxy-1,3-butadiene, benzene, 1,3-butadienylacetylene, carbon disulfide, crotonaldehyde, diacetyl, diacetylene, divinylacetylene, divinyl sulfide, 1,3,5-hexatriene, monovinylacetylene, thiophene, and toluene on the bulk polymerization of vinyl acetate were measured. Two polymerization tests utilizing different concentrations of benzoyl peroxide catalyst were used. Experimental details of the tests, inhibition factors and curves, and general conclusions regarding the magnitude of the inhibition caused by various organic functional groups are given.

Notes: Fractions of dimethylsiloxane polymer with viscosity-average molecular weights from 2.4 × 105 to 1.3 × 106 were dissolved in toluene in concentrations from 0.01 to 1.0 g./dl. These solutions were subjected to ultrasonic degradation at 20,000 cps for periods extending to as much as 960 min. in a water-cooled reaction vessel. Gel permeation chromatography shows that samples with different initial distributions approach the same distribution after 120 min. of degradation. Dilution of the polymer from 1.0 to 0.01 g./dl. more than triples the degradation per gram of polymer but requires 10 times as much energy per gram of polymer to degrade from a number-average molecular weight of 106 to 105. Increasing the power input from 36 to 72 w. almost doubles the degradation rate per gram of polymer.

Notes: A Raman-mechanical technique was used to study the relationship between stress distribution and fiber orientation in model composites. Our experimental data generally were consistent with most simplistic mechanical models. A more complete analysis, using the Eshelby equivalent inclusion method, fitted our experimental data exceptionally well. For large applied strains, compressive failure occurred for fibers which were oriented at high angles relative to the draw direction. This occurred because of the lateral shrinkage associated with the matrix when the sample was stretched. The effect of fiber end geometry on the stress distribution for these misaligned fibers was the same as observed earlier. Tapered-end fibers generally carried loads more efficiently in composites than blunt-end fibers.

Notes: A rigid-rod aromatic poly(pyridinium salt) was synthesized and doped with iodine (I2) for making anhydrous electrorheological (ER) fluids. The I2-doped particles were further processed into ones having insulating skins. Dielectric properties and current densities of the suspensions containing these particles were studied to elucidate the roles of conductivity of the dispersed phase in the ER suspension. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The Tb (NO3)3-PEO system was characterized to have a solubility limit equivalent to n ≅ 6.5 and a coordination number of 12.4 ± 0.1, compared to 5.0 and 10.9 ± 0.1 for the Nd(NO3)3-PEO system. The greater coordination involving Tb3+ appears to be responsible for the lower asymptotic glass transition temperature at high doping levels of the Tb(NO3)3-PEO complex. In both systems, anhydrous amorphous complexes were obtained below the respective solubility limits, over which apparent solubilities were found to be enhanced by the presence of tightly bound moisture while retaining the amorphous character of the complexes. Whereas partial precipitation was observed in the Tb(NO3)3-PEO system upon exposure to ambient moisture, both complexation and amorphous character were found to persist in the Nd(NO3)3-PEO system in the presence of absorbed moisture. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A series of polyurea urethanes was isothermally synthesized from toluene diisocyanate (TDI), water, and trifunctional poly(propylene oxide) in the temperature range of 50-150°C. Morphologies of the samples vary significantly as a function of reaction temperature. In this system, phase separation competes with polymerization and crosslinking. Both transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy have shown a network type of structure for the 50°C samples, while the 150°C samples appear to be homogeneous. Infrared analysis shows that samples prepared at 150°C possess a morphology that is less strongly hydrogen bonded and has a broader distribution of hydrogen-bonded states compared to those prepared at lower temperatures. From this combination of techniques, it can be inferred that phase separation occurs faster than crosslinking at low temperatures; consequently, a phase-separated morphology forms. In contrast, crosslinking occurs faster than phase separation at higher reaction temperatures. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 3065-3077, 1998

Notes: The variation of the x-ray reflection to the interchain separation in sodium pectate has been determined as a function of moisture content. The crystalline regions in sodium pectate have been found to sorb about 24% water (dry basis) at a relative humidity of 95% at 25°C. The sample as a whole under these conditions has a water content of 64%. At high water contents, therefore, a large difference in water content must exist between the crystalline and amorphous regions of sodium pectate. A marked change in degree of crystallinity occurs, as determined by the number and sharpness of the x-ray reflections, at an average water content of about 6% on desorption and on sorption at an average water content of about 14%.

Notes: The electrochemical behavior and surface chemistry of sputter-deposited non-equilibrium stainless Al-Ta alloys have been investigated. These alloys exhibit enhanced passivity over a pH range of 2-12 even though the passive film chemistry varies considerably over this range. This enhanced passivity can be explained by the solute-rich interphase mechanism (SRIM), which states that formation and passivation of occluded cells are controlled by localized concentrations of solute. The higher concentrations of solute at the metaloxide interface and around occluded cells stabilize the passive-film from continued Cl- attack and dissolution.

Notes: A new Intermediate Scale Heat Release Rate Test Method is being developed primarily for testing assemblies in the vertical mode. Using the oxygen consumption calorimetry methodology and exhaust collection systems that already exist in many laboratories in the US and around the world, the apparatus is very economical to install. The sample size lends itself to reptitive testing in a short period of time. Sample preparation is generally quick and easy. Further development of the method should progress now that the method has been introduced at ASTM and will be introduced formally into ISO in the near future. There has been a favorable response by several laboratories who are considering construction of the apparatus. Additional assemblies tests are already underway and additional data will be presented in the near future.
