    Description / Table of Contents: A rapid method for examining the dissolving rate of metals in corroding solutionsThe aqueous corrosion solution is applied to the metal surface to be investigated by means of a porous carrier, e. g. filter paper. After a certain reaction time, the carrier is removed and the quantity of metal dissolved is determined by means of a special polarographic method. Owing to the high sensitivity of the detection method and the very small volume of liquid, it is possible to determine the concentration of the dissolved metals after a very short time already.
    Notes: Die wäßrige Korrosionslösung wird mit einem porösen Träger - z. B. Filtrierpapier - auf die zu untersuchende Metallfläche gebracht. Nach einer gewissen Einwirkungszeit wird der Träger abgehoben und das gelöste Metall mit Hilfe einer speziellen polarographischen Methode bestimmt. Die hohe Empfindlichkeit der Detektormethode und das sehr kleine Flüssigkeitsvolumen gestatten nach sehr kurzer Zeit die Konzentration des gelösten Metalls zu bestimmen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and highly wear resistant hard metalsHard metals based on WC-Co have a better combination of mechanical properties compared to WC-Ni grades, but their corrosion resistance is generally poor. Either by variation of the binder phase (Ni, Ni-Cr) or by variation of the carbide phase (grain size) the corrosion resistance of hard metals can be tailored to the specific application maintaining the good mechanical properties of WC-Co-grades.The mechanical, chemical and thermal properties of various hard metal compositions are given.Hard metals of modified composition are used for valve parts, seal rings, nozzles and as wear parts for other applications in chemical industry.By their metallic nature, hard metals are still superior to ceramics in their mechanical strength, although ceramics show in general the excellent corrosion resistance. By optimising the carbide and binder phase in hard metals, improved corrosion resistance together with the good mechanical properties of WC-Co can be achieved.
    Notes: Hartmetalle auf der Basis WC-Co weisen die günstigste Kombination mechanischer Eigenschaften, verglichen mit WC-Ni-Sorten auf, jedoch ist ihre Korrosionsbeständigkeit in vielen Fällen nur ungenügend. Sowohl durch die Variation der Bindephase (Ni, Ni-Cr), als auch durch Variation der Karbidphase (Korngröße) gelingt es, die Korrosionsbeständigkeit von Hartmetallen dem jeweiligen Einsatzfall, unter Erhaltung der günstigen mechanischen Eigenschaften, besser anzupassen. Es werden die mechanischen, chemischen und thermischen Eigenschaften verschiedener Hartmetall-Zusammensetzungen vorgestellt.Hartmetall modifizierter Zusammensetzung kann für Ventilteile, Gleitringe, Düsen und für diverse Verschleißteile in der chemischen Industrie eingesetzt werden.Durch ihre metallische Natur sind Hartmetalle in ihren mechanischen Eigenschaften in vielen Fällen der sehr korrosionsresistenten Keramik überlegen. Durch Auswahl geeigneter Binde-und Karbidphasen gelingt es, bei erwünschter guter Korrosionsbeständigkeit, ein Maximum von Festigkeit, Zähigkeit und Härte zu erreichen.

    Description / Table of Contents: With the epoxy polyaddition system some fundamental relations between chemical structure and physical properties of crosslinked materials are shown. It became evident, that the morphology of the polymers is characteristically influenced not only by the segments between the crosslinks but also by the crosslinking fragments formed during the polyaddition reaction. Amine cured epoxy-systems show distinct β-relaxations causing higher toughness and flexibility as well as higher glass transition temperatures than the anhydride cured polymers. Similar systems result by crosslinking epoxidised cycloolefines with aliphatic polycarboxylic acids.The importance of the structure of the segments in positions between the crosslinks is shown by specific resin/hardener compositions. The influence of the network structure on the physical properties of the cured specimen is demonstrated by the degree of curing, crosslinking density, structural symmetry of the agents used, the molecular orientation and cristallization.
    Notes: Am Beispiel des Epoxidpolyadditionssystems werden einige grundlegende Zusammenhänge zwischen chemischer Struktur und den physikalischen Eigenschaften vernetzter Makromoleküle untersucht. Es zeigt sich, daß nicht nur die Segmente zwischen den Verzweigungsstellen, sondern auch die während der Polyadditionsreaktion gebildeten Vernetzungsfragmente die Morphologie der Polymeren in charakteristischer Weise beeinflussen. So resultieren bei der Reaktion von Epoxidharzen mit Aminen im Gegensatz zu Anhydriden Polymere mit ausgeprägten β-Relaxationen, die sich in erhöhter Zähigkeit und Flexibilität sowie erhöhten Glasumwandlungstemperaturen der Endprodukte auswirken. Ähnliche Systeme können aus epoxidierten Cycloolefinen und aliphatischen Polycarbonsäuren als „Härter“ gewonnen werden.Mit spezifischen Harz/Härter-Kombinationen wird die Bedeutung der Segmentstrukturen zwischen den Vernetzungsstellen demonstriert. Einflüsse des Netzwerksufbaues auf die physikalischen Eigenschaften werden anhand von Aushärtungsgrad, Vernetzungsdichte, Symmetrie der Bausteine sowie Nah- und Fernorientierungen gezeigt.

    Notes: The Tb (NO3)3-PEO system was characterized to have a solubility limit equivalent to n ≅ 6.5 and a coordination number of 12.4 ± 0.1, compared to 5.0 and 10.9 ± 0.1 for the Nd(NO3)3-PEO system. The greater coordination involving Tb3+ appears to be responsible for the lower asymptotic glass transition temperature at high doping levels of the Tb(NO3)3-PEO complex. In both systems, anhydrous amorphous complexes were obtained below the respective solubility limits, over which apparent solubilities were found to be enhanced by the presence of tightly bound moisture while retaining the amorphous character of the complexes. Whereas partial precipitation was observed in the Tb(NO3)3-PEO system upon exposure to ambient moisture, both complexation and amorphous character were found to persist in the Nd(NO3)3-PEO system in the presence of absorbed moisture. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The syntheses of new types of vinyl sugars are described whose vinyl groups are connected with the monosaccharide by a C—C bond. Such monomers can be polymerized by radical as well as by anionic initiation. Starting from D-mannitol, D-gluconolactone, D-galactose, and D-fructose, the isopropylidene-protected aldehydes (R)-2,3-isopropylidene-D-glyceraldehyde (3), 2,3;4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-aldehydo-D-arabinose (4), 1,2;3,4-di-O-isopropylidene-α-D-galacto-hexodialdo-1,5-pyranose (5), and 2,3;4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-β-D-arabino-hexosulo-2,6-pyranose (6) were prepared. Grignard reaction of the aldehyde compounds with 4-vinylphenylmagnesium chloride in tetrahydrofuran (THF) yielded the new styryl monomers of type 1, in each case as a mixture of two diastereoisomers. The corresponding reaction with vinylmagnesium bromide furnished a mixture of two diastereoisomeric allyl alcohol derivatives. Subsequent Swern oxidation (DMSO/(COCl)2) gave the vinyl ketones of type 2. A scale-up procedure (20 L flask) allowed eight different monomers to be prepared on a 50-200 g scale. Furthermore, the synthesis of the 2,3;4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-β-D-fructopyranose could be considerably improved.

    Notes: Optical sensors for bioprocess control. Bioprocess techniques are an important field in biotechnology. To run processes with high yields of products, to ensure product quality and for process optimization it is essential to acquire relevant process and control parameters quickly with high reliability. Therefore, various types of sensors are used; recently, beside chemosensors, new emphasis has been placed on biosensors for bioprocess control. At the same time optical transducers are gaining in significance. One reason for the increasing interest in optical sensors is the ready availability of fiber optic technologies. The combination of sensor technologies with fiber optics offers many possibilities due to miniaturisation and remote control and therefore meets the special requirements of bioprocess techniques. This review introduces various classes of optical chemo- and biosensors for bioprocess control.
