Deviations from the predictions of the statistical theory of rubber-elasticity are to be expected, if there are too short or pre-stressed chains in the network. Other deviations should be expected from the short-range order in the polymers because of their liquid-like character. The storage modulus G′ of cross-linked polymethyl methacrylate and natural rubber in the dry and swollen state was determined by torsional vibrations in dependence of the temperature. It was observed in a large temperature range, that G′ is independent of the frequency and shows a linear increase with increasing temperature. We found, that the part of G′ due to a change in internal energy is increasing with crosslink-density and degree of swelling. According to the statistical theory this part should have a constant value. The interpretation, that short or extended chains contribute in an essential manner to the internal energy part of the modulus, was supported by measurements on endgroup-crosslinked polybutadiene with a narrow distribution of the chain lengths. For this material the mentioned dependencies do not occur. It follows from the statistical theory that the birefringence exhibited by an amorphous rubber-elastic substance at constant deformation is independent of temperature. It also follows that the stress-optical coefficient remains constant when these substances are swollen in solvents, provided a correction is applied to allow for the change in the average refractive index of the material on swelling. We found that for crosslinked polybutadiene and styrene-butadiene copolymer the birefringence at constant deformation decreases distinctly with rising temperature. The stress-optical coefficient also decreases on swelling in carbon tetrachloride. From these results we concluded that in amorphous polymers certain positions of chain segments in relation to one another are preferred as a result of the interaction forces. This short-range order decreases with rising temperature and with swelling. In this short-range order and in the distribution of the chain lengths in the network we see the reason for the characteristic shape of the stress-strain-curve of unswollen elastomers in the range of low deformation, which is not in accordance with the statistical theory.
Notes:
