Notes: By a comparative study and by calibration, Raman spectroscopy is established as a non-destructive method for the determination of the monomer concentration in solid poly(methyl methacrylate) samples. Although the effect of the internal field on the refractive index and on the Raman intensity of a polymer solution in a monomer is considered, the Raman scattering cross section of the carbonyl stretching vibration of the monomer turns out to be more than twice as large as that of the polymer.

Notes: High quality nanoscale, phase-pure hexagonal gallium nitride (GaN) crystallites have been synthesized by the thermal induced detonation of molecular precursors of the type (R3N)Ga(N3)3 (R=CH3, C2H5, etc.). The method allows the control of the particle size regime from 2 to about 1000 nm. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld simulations revealed an anisotropic platelet-like shape of the particles. The obtained GaN material was as well characterized by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction, photoluminescence spectroscopy, SEM, IR, RAMAN, thermal gas effusion/mass spectrometry, thermal analysis, elemental analysis. Gas absorption measurements (BET method) showed a specific surface area of about 90 m2 · g-1. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Differential pulse polarography (DPP) is an excellent analytical method, but cannot be recommended for applications in the initial stages of mechanistic studies. Its application is also questionable in the analysis of samples containing varying concentrations of an organic cosolvent or of surface active compounds. The effect on limiting currents obtained by DC polarography and on peak currents obtained by DPP was demonstrated for reductions of various nitrobenzene derivatives. The similarity of changes in current for various nitrobenzenes enables the exclusion of the formation of adducts or micelles as the predominant effect. The decrease of the limiting currents in all cases is much smaller than the decrease of DPP peak currents, due to strong effects of the surfactants on the kinetics of electroreduction. For the analysis of natural products or of solutions containing varying amounts of organic cosolvent, the measurement of the DC polarographic limiting current is preferred. An addition of 30% ethanol minimizes the effects of the varying concentration of surfactant on both DC polarographic limiting and DPP peak currents.

Notes: The polarographic method proved suitable for investigation of adsorption of acifluorfen (I) (5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2′-nitrobenzoic acid) on lignin. Polarographic reduction of acifluorfen in aqueous buffers (pH 〈 7) is complicated by adsorption of the reduction product. In acidic media the reduction of the protonated hydroxylamino group occurs at such positive potentials that only a single six-electron wave is observed. In buffers containing 33% (w/w) ethanol the effects of the adsorption are eliminated and the reduction of the hydroxylamino group occurs at more negative potentials, so that one four-electron and one two-electron wave are observed. Splitting of the four-electron wave at pH 〉 7 is attributed to a decrease in protonation rate of the reduction intermediate. Unsubstituted p-nitrophenyl phenyl ether (II) shows an analogous behavior. Reduction wave of the nitro group can be used for determination of aciflurofen (I), fluorodifen (III), oxyfluorfen (IV), and bifenox (V) in the 1 × 10-5 to 5 × 10-4 M range. Adsorption of acifluorfen depends on the nature of the lignin and pH.

Notes: The degree of microleakage between a restoration and the cavity wall is difficult to quantify objectively. A silver-staining method is used and compared to the radioisotope method with results that indicate a superior definition and more accurate evaluation of microleakage. In addition to the accuracy, two advantages are presented: (1) scoring of the leakage can be refined and divided into more precise numbers, and (2) teeth can be observed directly in a microscope without resorting to the indirect interpretation of film or photograph.

Notes: The synthesis of N-vinylcarbazole (VCbz) copolymers in which electron-accepting groups are incorporated into the polymer chain is reported. The acceptors were introduced by appropriate reactions of VCbz-vinyl acetate or VCbz-acryloyl chloride copolymers and consisted of 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl, 2,4-dinitrophenyl acrylate, β-2,4-dinitrophenoxy propionate, and trichlorobenzoquinone units. The copolymer containing the 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl units required no chloranil as a dopant to be photoconductive, and in fact showed a slightly improved photoresponse relative to conventional poly VCbz doped with external chloranil.
