Notes: Permselective cationic membranes were prepared by a radioinduced grafting method of styrene onto PTFE, and a preirradiation technique was used. Some attempts were made to characterize the membranes. They show mechanical properties similar to the PTFE matrix, and good electrochemical behavior, i.e., good permselectivity, which, nevertheless, decreased with decreasing solutions concentration. Such behavior has been related to a larger swelling in diluted solutions. Swelling properties in aqueous solutions of KCl and some organic solvents are also reported.

Notes: Four polystyrene samples, with molecular weight ranging from 43,300 to 1,112,000 have been irradiated in benzene solution by γ-rays, at four different intensities. Data obtained through intrinsic viscosity and light-scattering measurements on irradiated polymers indicate that, at each intensity, there exists a molecular weight below which any polymer chain is no further degraded. An equilibrium between absorbed and dissipated energy by the macromolecule is supposed, and the equation, MlimI = const. arrived at in a previous study, is verified also by the present experimental results.

Notes: The presence of the structural interconnected porosity causes serious problems in the use of traditional bath compositions or usual deposition methods for protecting sintered iron pieces. The corrosion protection of steel is traditionally obtained by different surface treatment methods such as painting, electroplating, dipping or spraying, which cannot always be easily transposed for sintered metal parts. The aim of this work is to study in detail a wide range of industrially produced coatings, covering all the main proposed treatments, in order to evaluate the microstructural characteristics and in particular to point out the structural defects which can affect the corrosion behaviour of the protected sintered metal parts. The samples studied in this work were obtained by industrial production; both the sintered substrates and the corrosion protection treatments were carried out by specialized factories.

Description / Table of Contents: Korrosionsschutz von Sintermetallteilen durch Überzüge.
Notes: Coated sintered steel parts were subjected to corrosion resistance tests and electrochemical characterization. A wide range of industrially produced coatings, covering all the main proposed treatments, were analysed.Conventional corrosion tests were employed to compare corrosion resistance, whereas electrochemical test methods were used with the aim of giving a better understanding of the mechanisms which control corrosion processes and the corrosion rate. In particular, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed to be very helpful in allowing the monitoring of corrosion behaviour as a function of testing time, without introducing significant electrical perturbation on the examined system. The experimental results of this study showed that sintered steel protection by coating is possible if the process is very well controlled, however, defects in the coating can always be present due to the substrate porosity. With this fact in mind the use of sacrificial coatings is recommendable due to the possibility of a cathodic protection corresponding to coating defects.

Notes: The radiation-induced graft polymerization of styrene to low density polyethylene was investigated. It was found that dilution of the styrene monomer with methanol accelerates the rate of graft polymerization with a maximum effect occurring at approximately 70 vol.-% methanol. Both the accelerated and unaccelerated graft polymerizations yield volumetric or homogeneous graft copolymers. Experiments in which n-octane was substituted for methanol as the diluent showed that the accelerative effects of methanol are best explained by the incursion of a Trommsdorff-type effect. The kp2/kt values for the grafting reaction in the various styrene-methanol solutions were calculated. It was found that the kp2/kt term is larger in grafting than in homopolymerization by a factor of 103, and that it increases as the methanol concentration of the monomer solution increases.

Notes: Measurements of the limiting viscosity number and dipole moments in benzene at 25°C. have been performed on carefully fractionated low molecular weight poly(ethyleneoxide) (M.W. ranging from 194 to 7770). The results of these measurements have been related to some hypotheses on the structure of molecules in the dissolved state. We have realized that internal rotations of the bonds are hindered by asymmetric potentials with a minimum near the gauche position. Although the exact shape of these potentials has not yet been defined, the so deduced conformation of the molecule in solution agrees very well not only with our measurements, but also with the most probable hypotheses obtained from x-ray studies on crystalline structure and infrared spectra of POEG in various physical states.

Notes: The gamma radiation-induced surface graft copolymerizations of styrene - acrylonitrile and styrene - methyl acrylate to Teflon were studied. It was observed that the compositions of the various grafted copolymers are richer in the more polar monomer than one would predict from the Lewis-Mayo copolymer composition equation. These results were interpreted in terms of a preferential solvation of the relatively immobile growing graft polymer free radicals by the polar monomers.

Notes: Passive films formed in 1N HCI at different potentials on mechanically polished samples of the alloy Fe70Cr10P13C7 were studied by XPS surface analysis. The thickness of the films increases with the applied potential; at 0.4 V/SCE (saturated calomel electrode) a discontinuity is observed. The passive films are enriched in chromium oxyhydroxide; phosphates are incorporated in notable amounts. The substrate underneath the film is enriched in phosphorus. The outstanding corrosion resistance of this alloy may thus be attributed to this enrichment of phosphorus underneath the film, reducing to a great extent the ionic conductivity of the interface, and to the incorporation of phosphates in the passive film.
