Notes: As epoxy curing agents three alkenyl succinic anhydrides (ASA) with varying side chain length (2-octenyl, 2-dodecenyl and 2-hexadecenyl succinic anhydride) were prepared by the ene synthesis and thermal and mechanical properties of a bisphenol A epoxy resin cured with the ASA's were measured. With increase in the side chain length of the ASA the Tg, the tensile strength and the impact strength decreased. All the cured samples exhibited excellent transparency and flexibility.

Notes: Poly(1,4-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and its derivatives are readily processable and thermally stable polyconjugated polymers. Since PPV contains phenylene units, its structure can be easily altered and modified in the electronic structure. Moreover, PPV and the derivatives are easily prepared via water-soluble or organic-soluble precursor polymers. Various PPVs substituted with electron-donating or -withdrawing groups were synthesized and their third-order optical nonlinearities were investigated by third-harmonic generation method or degenerate four-wave mixing technique. When phenylene rings carry two alkoxy electron-donating groups, the substituted PPVs show third-order nonlinear optical properties up to an χ(3) value of about 10-9 esu. In order to obtain polymeric materials having high optical quality, PPV and silica alkoxide can be mixed successfully by sol-gel processing without any phase separation or precipitation. This unusual organic-inorganic hybrid shows a great advantage in the photonics applications.

Notes: Two types of new polyurethanes with a highly NLO active chromophore, 2-[4-[4-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]phenylazo]benzylidene]malonitrile (HAPM), in the polymer side chain were synthesized (PU1-DCN and PU2-DCN) and characterized. The diisocyanate components of the polymers are 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate and 3,3′-dimethoxybiphenyl-4,4′-ylene diisocyanate. The molecular weights of PU1-DCN and PU2-DCN were determined to be M̄w = 23000 (M̄w/M̄n = 2.19) and M̄w = 22000 (M̄w/M̄n = 2.34), respectively. The final products are readily soluble in polar aprotic organic solvents, like tetrahydrofuran, N,N-dimethylformamide, cyclohexanone, etc. Good optical quality films were obtained by spin coating. The glass transition temperatures of both polymers were found to be 158-159°C. They showed no melting points in the DSC curves, suggesting an amorphous phase. It was found that the electro-optic coefficient of PU1-DCN was r33 = 62.7 pm · V-1 at 633 nm wavelength. The macroscopic second-order hyperpolarizability at 1064 nm wavelength was determined to be χ(2) = 136 pm · V-1 for PU1-DCN and χ(2) = 120 pm · V-1 for PU2-DCN.

Notes: A series of the wholly aromatic polyazomethines (PAM) having flexible side chains was synthesized by solution and melt polycondensation of 2,5-dialkoxyterephthalaldehydes and aromatic diamines. The solution polycondensation was carried out at 80°C for 24 h in 1,3-dimethyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2(1H)-pyrimidinone (DMPU)/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) mixtures. The melt polycondensation was conducted in N2 atmosphere at 200°C for 2,8 h. All of the polymers were soluble in CCl4, CHCl3, THF, benzene, toluene, etc. The inherent viscosity (ηinh), measured at 30°C in CHCl3, was 0,13-0,32 dL/g, and 5% weight loss in TG curves appeared at 365-390°C in N2 atmosphere. The electrical conductivities of I2-treated dialkoxy-substituted PAM were low, 10-4 〈 σ 〈 10-6 S/cm, compared with unsubstituted I2-treated PAM.

Notes: Variable temperature magic angle spinning 13C NMR experiments on linear alkanes and low molecular weight polyethylene allowed the observation of up to six carbon atoms at the chain ends near the surface of the lamellar crystallites. Conformational order-disorder and intermolecular packing effects are reflected by the spectra. The effects are discussed with regard to the peculiar phase behaviour of the n-alkanes and the fringed micella model for low molecular weight polyethylene. The solid-solid transitions of nonadecane and hexatriacontane appear to be correlated with the occurrence of specific non-liquid-like conformational disordering. Thus, conformational defects were observed for the “rotator phase” which depend on the chain length and which vary along the chain. Whilst the center part of the chain remains all-trans ordered, significant gauche defects were observed for the bonds at the chain ends. For a polydisperse low molecular weight linear polyethylene as well as for monodisperse octahexacontahectane reversible liquid-like conformational disordering of the terminal chain segments could be detected when the melting point was approached. Hence, in this case the NMR spectra indicate pre-melting of the lamella surface, while in case of the shorter n-alkanes the occurrence of end-gauche defects is correlated with solid-solid transitions.

Notes: A series of rigid rod-like polyspiroacetals bearing flexible side chains was prepared by interfacial polycondensation of 4,4′-(2,4,8,10-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]undecane-3,9-diyl)diphenol with 2,5-dialkoxy-substituted terephthaloyl dichlorides. The majority of these polymers were soluble in polar solvents like tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), CHCl3, phenol/CCl4 (1 : 1 by vol.) mixtures, etc. The molecular weights ranged from 7 600 to 15 000 and the melting temperature from 182 to 228°C. Both of the above values decreased with increasing length of the side chains. The TG curves revealed 5% weight loss at 350-370°C under N2 gas atmosphere. Wide-angle X-ray diffractograms showed that all of the polymers have considerable crystallinity at room temperature.

Notes: Poly(2-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (PMVP) and copolymers containing both unsubstituted (1,4-phenylenevinylene, PV) and 2-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene (MPV) units were prepared in thin films from their water-soluble sulfonium salt precursor polymers. Drawn films (L/L0 = 6) of the PMPV homopolymer could be doped with I2 vapor and FeCl3 to give conductivities of 3,2 and 4,0 ċ cm-1, respectively. The conductivity of FeCl3-doped copolymer films ranged from 100 to ca. 102 ċ cm-1 depending on the composition. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility, χ(3), for the PMPV film was investigated by degenerate four-wave mixing technique using 400 femtosecond pulses at 602 nm. A relatively large χ(3) value (7,9 ċ 10-10 esu) with a subpicosecond response was observed.
