Notes: Organotin monomers and polymers are becoming of increasing importance. Of especial theoretical and practical interest are polymers of organotin materials. In the present report results are described of studies carried out in the Laboratory of Vinyl Compounds of the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences, USSR and in the Plastics Institute of the State Committee on Chemistry of the Council of Ministers, USSR. The syntheses of a number of organotin polymers are reported, in particular, of the organotin polymethyl methacrylates from trialkyl (or aryl) stannyl methacrylates R3Sn—OCO(CH3)=CH2 and dialkyl (or aryl) stannylene dimethacrylates R2Sn[OCOC(CH3)=CH2]2 and copolymers based on these. The high molecular compounds obtained by polymerization of the organotin esters are a new class of vinyl polymers with the structure: Organotin esters copolymerize with various unsaturated monomers such as methyl methacrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, cyclopentadiene, etc. The copolymers are mechanically strong, transparent materials. They represent considerable barriers to the passage of x-rays. The organotin esters R3SnOCOC(CH3)=CH2 and R2Sn[OCOC(CH3)=CH2]2 containing the alkyl radicals amyl, hexyl and higher groups polymerize at room temperature in the absence of catalysts to form soft and elastic polymeric materials. In the report a number of properties of another class of organotin polymers, namely, dialkyl (or aryl) stannones (R2SnO)n are discussed. It is suggested that they are high molecular compounds. Their x-ray diagrams and the results of other physicochemical analyses are examined. A study of their Debye x-ray diagrams showed that they have a regularly oriented structure. They are highly reactive and are sources for the preparation of new organotin compounds. Some of their physicochemical properties are described.

Notes: Potentiometric titrations in water of high-molecular-weight partly hydrolyzed polyacrylamides were analyzed by the Lifson - Katchalsky rodlike model. A fair concordance was found between theory and experimental curves with pK0 of acid functions of about 4.75 when 0 〈 τ 〈 0.49. Two methods were derived to calculate the parameter n of the extended Henderson-Hasselbach equation by using a series expansion of pKa vs. α, not yet reported in the literature. A new equation for n was established and comparison between two sets of values of n, obtained by using the theoretical ΔpK curves and series expansion is discussed.

Notes: The effect of ionization (α) and added salts (NaCl, CaCl2, MgCl2) on the dimensions of commercially available high-molecular-weight polyacrylamides (Mw ≃ 4 × 106), hydrolyzed at various extents (0.04 〈 τ 〈 0.49) and which have been characterized, was investigated by viscosity and light-scattering measurements performed at 25°C. The data point with evidence to the strong dependence of the chain dimensions on the charge density (ατ) and the effect of the nature and concentration of added salts. From a practical point of view it is shown that there is no advantage to using too highly hydrolyzed samples (τ 〉 0.45) in media containing large amounts of salts that lead to precipitation of polymers, especially in the presence of divalent ions.

Notes: Effects of rheological parameters of polyolefin suspension were studied to better understand stirred tank polymerization reactors and their engineering principles. Experimental results have been fitted into a quadratic model. Consistency index and behavior index have been determined as functions of solids concentration, temperature, and particle size.

Notes: Pt-and Pd-catalyzed reactions of a set of allyloxyaromatic mono-and diesters with selected silanes were examined to develop simple, mild methods of forming liquid crystal (LC)/ siloxane and LC/silsesquioxane polymers. Pt complexes catalyze hydrosilylation to give primarily (≤ 80% selectivity at 100% conversion) terminal silylation of the allyloxys. The catalyst, platinum-1,3-divinyltetramethyldisiloxane [Pt (dvs), gives the cleanest reactions, fewest side products, under the mildest conditions. Model studies of Pt(dvs) catalyzed hydrosilylation of 4-allyloxy methylbenzoate gave relative reactivities (HSiO1.5)8 ≫ Et3SiH 〉 HMe2Si—O—SiMe2H 〉 Ph2SiH2. The cubic silsesquioxane, (HSiO1.5)8, is so reactive hydrosilylation is over in 1-3 h at 0°C. All other reactions required 〉 40°C and longer reaction times. Initial efforts to form high polymers by Pt-catalyzed reactions of bis-allyloxy aromatics with Ph2SiH2 provide polymers with bimodal MW distributions (polystyrene), Mws ≈ 30 kDa, and PDIs ≈ 5. Pd catalysis gives quite different products resulting from loss of propene with coincident formation of Si—O bonds, “oxysilylation.” The same products appear (10-15%) in some Pt catalyzed reactions. Palladium dibenzylideneacetone/ Ph3P[Pd(dba)2/Ph3P], gives the cleanest oxysilylation reactions. Relative oxysilylation activities are: Ph2SiH2 〉 HMe2SiOSiMe2H 〉 Et3SiH. Polymerization with Pd catalysts provides polymers with Mws ≈ 11 kDa, and PDIs ≈ 2. Reaction of 1 equiv. of (HSiO1.5)8 with 4 equiv. of 4-(4-allyloxy-benzoyloxy) biphenyl gives relatively pure tetrasubstituted LC/silsesquioxane [Mn ≈ 1860 Da, PDI ≈ 1.09 (styrene equiv.) vs. 1746 Da caled.] A detailed analysis of the products formed, the catalytic reactivity patterns of the his (allyloxy) aromatic diesters and their LC transitions is presented. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The permeabilities of polyethylene film to vapors of 19 organic compounds at temperatures of 21°C, 38°C, and 49°C were measured by a sorption method. The film was formed into a pouch, which was filled with silica gel, sealed, and suspended in a saturated atmosphere. The permeability was calculated from the steady-state rate of the gain in weight. The permeability data were correlated with the Hildebrand solubility parameters of the organic substances.

Notes: A new method of measuring the permeability of plastic films to vapors is described. The method is simple and convenient, uses general-purpose equipment, and gives good results in a short time. It is easily adapted to vapors other than water vapor. This method is recommended for measurements of permeability where the expense of specialized equipment is not justified. Further studies on effects of parameters such as temperature, humidity, solvation of polymer, etc., are under way.
