Notes: Copolymerization of vinyl chloride with trans-1,2-dichloroethylene was carried out at various temperatures, and the properties of the copolymers obtained by the emulsion copolymerization at low temperature were examined. In the case of bulk copolymerization at temperatures higher than room temperature, the rate of polymerization, the equilibrium conversion, and [η] were lowered with increasing content of trans-1,2-dichloroethylene in the initial monomer mixture, but the Tg and softening point of the copolymers containing about 15% of 1,2-dichloroethylene unit were about 10°C. higher than these of conventional PVC resin, in spite of their inability to form films. The monomer reactivity ratios at 50°C. were 5.39 (VC) and 0.072 (trans-DCE). Emulsion copolymerization was carried out at -30°C. with the use of a redox initiator system (hydrogen peroxide-ferrous sulfate-ascorbic acid), in order to increase both the [η] and the rate of polymerization. The copolymers prepared at low temperature had higher Tg and better solubility than the VC homopolymer polymerized at the same condition or conventional PVC resin. The results of the infrared absorption spectra, the solubilities, and the calculation of sequence length of VC monomer unit in the polymer chain indicated that the stereoregularity and the crystallinity of the low temperature copolymers were lower than those of the low temperature VC homopolymers. It was concluded that higher Tg and good solubility of the low temperature copolymer were brought about by the prevention of the free rotation of the polymer chain by the random distribution of 1,2-dichloroethylene units in the polymer chain.

Notes: Poly(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene) was prepared by oxidative polymerization of p-dimethoxybenzene with aluminum chloride and copper(II) chloride in nitrobenzene under reduced pressure. The polymers obtained were soluble in sulfuric acid and fusible at 320°C. The intrinsic viscosity of the polymer was ca. 0.07 in sulfuric acid. Demethylation of methoxy groups did not occur during the polymerization.

Notes: Radical cyclopolymerization of acrylic anhydride (AA) was conducted under various polymerization conditions to yield highly cyclized polymer, and the content of the five-membered ring of cyclic poly-AA obtained was examined in detail. Five-membered ring formation was favored with increased solvent polarity, raised polymerization temperature, and decreased monomer concentration; the ring size of the cyclic structure could be controlled freely by choosing appropriate polymerization conditions. In addition to these results, the rate of polymerization and the molecular weight of the polymer were reduced under polymerization conditions where the five-membered ring formation was favored. Finally, a mechanistic discussion is given in order to interpret these results; a reaction scheme for propagation based on polymerization equilibrium is proposed.

Notes: Various polyamides and polyesters having different numbers of methylene groups in their repeating units have been synthesized and their blood compatibilities have been evaluated in terms of the adhesion behavior of blood platelets on the surface of these condensation polymers by a micro-sphere-column method. The number of methylene groups in the repeating units of polyamides and polyesters influenced the adhesion behavior of platelets and there was an optimum number of methylene groups each in polyamides and polyesters. Poly(hexamethylene terephthalamide) and poly(pentamethylene terephthalate) adsorbed platelets in the smallest number in the polyamide and polyester series, respectively. Blood platelets were adsorbed on polyamides in smaller numbers than on corresponding polyesters. It was found that the platelet adhesion on the surface of polyamides and polyesters was closely related to their crystallinities and the number of the adsorbed platelets decreased linearly with increasing their relative crystallinity.

Notes: Vapor of propargyl alcohol under reduced pressure was glow-discharged for plasma polymerization by which hydrophilic polymer film could be deposited onto a solid substrate. The hydrophilic property was more enhanced with use of the same monomer containing water. An interpretation of chemical structures of the polymer molecules was therefore attempted to discover the reason of the hydrophilic property. The polymer materials were subjected to IR spectroscopy, 13C-NMR and 1H-NMR spectroscopies, elemental analysis, number average molecular weight determination, mass spectrometry, and other wet chemical analysis for . The IR spectra of the polymers showed the presence of OH, C=O, and C=C groups with a disappearance of C≡C group of the monomer. It was also found that the molecular formula of a solvent extract of the polymer derived from the plain monomer was C26H36O9 ≒ 490, involving four hydroxyl, one carbonyl, and two to three olefinic unsaturation groups within a unit molecule. On the other hand, the polymer from 60% water-containing monomer showed its molecular formula as C44H66O18 ≒ 890, containing seven to eight hydroxyl, two carbonyl, and one to two olefinic unsaturation groups. This information was used to establish the symbolic chemical structures of the polymer molecules. It has been found that both polymers were not as much crosslinked as other plasma polymers because of having side chains with fewer branching. The oxygen atoms were retained in the polymer not only as the forms of OH and C=O but also as a member of the principal frame of the polymers.

Notes: Chemical structure of the plasma-polymerized pyridine film produced on a glass reactor wall by means of the plasma technique in which the pyridine vapor was electronically excited by high-frequency power under a reduced pressure was elucidated. The polymer was highly hydrophilic and was soluble to some of the polar organic solvents so that nitrogen-containing polar functional groups were predicted to participate in the chemical structure of the polymer molecules. 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and IR spectroscopies, high-resolution mass spectral data, and number-average molecular weight determination with some aid of microelemental analysis revealed the presence of various functional groups such as imine, nitrile, amine, pyridine ring, its N-oxide, and even amide. The oxygen atoms involved in the last two groups were supposedly introduced by contact with ambient air after the plasma process. The hydrophilic nature of the polymer which was essential for preparing reverse osmosis membrane was therefore due to the overall hydration effect of these polar functional groups.

Notes: Characterization of styrene-grafted Bombyx mori silk fibroin membrance was investigated. It was revealed from the water sorption and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements that the amounts of water adsorbed on the silk fibroin membranes decreased by the styrene grafting and the states of water adsorbed on the styrene-grafted silk fibroin membranes were not homogeneous; the presence of two components of water adsorbed on the membranes at 60% relative humidity was observed. In addition, the fraction of the fast component decreased with increasing styrene grafting. The membrane potentials increased with increasing of the grafting. The KCl permeability of the membrane strongly depends on the degree of styrene grafting.
