    Notizen: Poly(2-(2′-ethylhexylthio)-5-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (PMEHTPV) was synthesized in thin films via a water-soluble precursor polymer and characterized with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), FT-IR, and elemental analysis, etc. The PMEHTPV film could be stretched up to 10 times and showed conductivity of 0.13 Scm-1 when doped with FeCl3. The 2-ethylhexylthio group resulted in blue-shifted absorption and emission compared to those of poly(2-2′-ethylhexyloxy-5-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV).     Notizen: Poly(2-methoxy-5-methylthio-1,4-phenylene vinylene), PMTPV, and copolymers containing both unsubstituted or 2,5-dimethoxy-substituted and 2-methoxy-5-methylthio-1,4-phenylene vinylene units were prepared in thin films from their water-soluble, sulfonium salt precursor polymers. Doping of drawn and undrawn films of PMTPV with I2 vapor led to conductivities of 10-4-10-3 S cm-1, which is significantly lower than those reported for poly(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene vinylene). Conductivity of I2-doped copolymer films ranges from 10-3-100 S cm-1 depending on composition.

    Notizen: Rigid IPN foams were prepared by sequential polymerization of polyurethane and epoxy systems. Significantly higher compressive modulus and strength were observed with the IPN foams in comparison to the corresponding polyurethane rigid foams. The IPN foams show one glass transition temperature. The single Tg indicates the very small domain size in the PU-epoxy IPN's.

    Notizen: Polyurethane elastomers possessing dangling chains were prepared by partial substitution of the multifunctional polyol with a monohydroxyl alcohol in the reaction with an isocyanate terminated prepolymer. The dynamic mechanical spectroscopy showed that created dangling segements resulted in a broader glass-transition region. This indicated material with potentially good energy absorbing properties might be prepared from a ‘dangling polymer’ system. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: A simulation model based on the “unit segment” concept which provides prediction of conversion and molecular weight of product, is proposed for the emulsion polymerization of AN and St in azeotropic composition. Effects of initiator concentration and emulsifier concentration on conversion and molecular weight were studied experimentally and theoretically. It is found that the desorption of AN radicals should be taken into account, and the number of radicals per particle is always less than 0.5. The concentration of polymer particles is proportional to the 0.58 power in respect of the emulsifier concentration and to the 0.35 power in respect of the initiator concentration. The auto-acceleration effect becomes significant when both initial emulsifier concentration and initiator concentration decrease, which influences the average molecular weight of the products. The azeotropic composition of AN-St is 28.5:71.5 by weight for this system at 60°C reaction temperature.

    Notizen: Our previous two articles have shown that glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium is nearly isotropic, whether fixed without constraints, with tethering, or with pressure. In this study, we have used uniaxial stress during fixation to produce bovine pericardial material with marked tensile anisotropy. Rectangular and cruciate pericardial samples have been mechanically examined after one of four treatments: (i) fixation under 88-kPa uniaxial stress, (ii) fixation under 176-kPa uniaxial stress, (iii) 3 h of 176-kPa uniaxial stress in saline followed by 24-h fixation under the same stress, (iv) fixation under 176-kPa uniaxial stress followed by a second fixation under 176-kPa stress in a direction normal to the first. Strips of material were cut at 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° to direction of the initial stress, and tested for response to cyclic loading, stress relaxation, plastic deformation, and fracture properties. Fixation under uniaxial stress produced anistropy similar to that seen in porcine aortic valve leaflets; however, the overall extensibility of the material depended on the applied stress and the aspect ratio of the stressed sample. While loading in saline produced no change, the sequential biaxial stressing produced a reduction in anisotropy, suggesting exposure of additional crosslinking sites. Uniaxial stress during fixation may be a useful method for construction of anisotropic heart valve leaflets.

    Notizen: Poly{oxy-4,4′-octafluorobiphenylyleneoxy-alt-[1,4-phenylenevinylene(3-trimethylsilyl-1,4-phenylene)vinylene-1,4-phenylene]} (PFSi) was synthesized and characterized to investigate its thermal, optical, electrical and xerographic properties. An LED (light emitting device) using PFSi as the light emitting layer exhibits maximum emission for blue light, but a high turn-on voltage. The origin of the low device performance was examined by investigating the photoconducting behavior. PFSi shows a high photoconductivity in the presence of electron acceptors such as 5-nitroanthranilonitrile (5NAN), and the photoconductivity of PFSi is improved by introducing charge transport materials such as triphenylamine (TPA).

    Notizen: We have demonstrated a novel approach to achieve a stable second-order NLO polymer by incorporating NLO moieties into a processable epoxy polymer and hardening with crosslinkable sol-gel technique. The crosslinked polymer showed high nonlinearity (d33 = 41 pm/V) and better thermal stability compared to the prepolymer, which maintained its nonlinearity up to 100°C without significant loss of NLO activity.

Drawn films (L/L0 = 6) of the PMPV homopolymer could be doped with I2 vapor and FeCl3 to give conductivities of 3,2 and 4,0 ċ cm-1, respectively. The conductivity of FeCl3-doped copolymer films ranged from 100 to ca. 102 ċ cm-1 depending on the composition. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility, χ(3), for the PMPV film was investigated by degenerate four-wave mixing technique using 400 femtosecond pulses at 602 nm. A relatively large χ(3) value (7,9 ċ 10-10 esu) with a subpicosecond response was observed.
