Notes: A Comparison between two different feedstocks in the homogeneous polymerization of butadiene has been conducted. The conversion and molecular weight trends were essentially the same for both feedstock systems. Changes in polydispersity at high conversions could not be explained by a living polymerization mechanism. A reaction scheme involving reuse of active cobalt centres combined with termination has been proposed.

Notes: The effect of reaction conditions on conversion and molecular weight in the polymerization of butadiene initiated by cobalt octoate/diethylaluminum chloride/water was studied. The polymerization exhibited complex kinetics with respect to cobalt concentration. The molecular weight, as a function of conversion, was investigated. Chain transfer to aluminum alkyl was of only minor importance.

Notes: A mathematical model which describes conversion and molecular weight development in the homogeneous polymerization of butadiene has been developed. The reaction scheme and derivation of the model equations are included. It was found that a catalyst formation efficiency must be estimated for each polymerization. The correct trends were predicted, although weight-average molecular weight was often underestimated. The model could not fully account for the effect of water concentration.
