Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the area ratio on the current density in galvanic and aeration cellsWith a view to corrosion phenomena on conventional metal combinations the corrosion current density has been studied as a function of the cathode: anode area ratio in aeration cells (Fe/Zn, Fe/Fe, Zn/Zn, with Na-sulfate and NaCl as electrolytes) and in galvanic cells (Cu/Fe, Cu/Zn, with Cu—, ammonium and zinc sulfate as electrolytes). It was the aim of the investigation to find out the extent to which the theoretical ideas of Mansfeld and Akimov concerning film rupture and diffusion control may be applicable. It is found that mansfeld's concept must be extended to include the effective electrode potentials in order to allow an interpretation of corrosion current density in aeration cells. In the case of galvanic cells, however, there is a limitation attributable to the cell resistance which is determined by independent resistance measurements. The corrosion behaviour of the metals studied is interpreted in terms of the measured current densities.

Notes: Dialkyl iodomethylmalonates in the presence of tetrabutylammonium iodide initiate the polymerization of methyl methacrylate, but not of methyl acrylate or acrylonitrile. Typically, at 60°C in 1,3-dimethyltetrahydro-2-1H-pyrimidone (DMPU) as the solvent, poly(methyl methacrylate (PMMA)) is obtained in the number-average molecular weight range of 2 000 to 8 000, the molecular weight distribution being fairly narrow (ratio of weight- to number-average molecular weights M̄w/M̄n 1.2-1.3).

Notes: Attempts are reported to interprete quantitatively glass transition measurements for blends of poly(2,6-dimethylphenylene oxide) (PPO) and poly(styrene-co-α-methylstyrene) or poly(α-methylstyrene). These blends are found to be miscible over the whole composition and molecular weight ranges. Furthermore, the influence of thermal annealing on the glass transition temperature is studied. It is shown that blends containing poly(α-methylstyrene) or copolymers are in some cases very sensitive to thermal degradation. By employing FTIR spectroscopy the interactions in PPO/poly(α-methylstyrene) blends are studied.

Description / Table of Contents: Interactions between N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide and a second protic or aprotic solvent component for cellulose are considered. For the experimental investigations DSC,1H-NMR spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and WAXS were employed. To obtain informations on the mechanism of cellulose dissolution, some model compounds containing OH-groups were investigated in the appropriate binary solvent systems. The results obtained here and in our previous publications are discussed with regard to the solvent action of binary systems with NMMNO·1H2O on cellulose.

Notes: The structure and synthesis of some poly(vinylsaccharide)s is described. Five different monomers, N-saccharide-substituted acryl-and methacrylamides, were prepared and polymerized to high molecular weight products using different initiator systems. The influence of the chemical structure of the saccharide moiety on the solution properties was studied by viscosity and light scattering measurements, and a comparative discussion of the solution behaviour of poly(2-deoxy-2-methacrylamido-D-glucose), poly(1-deoxy-1-methacrylamido-D-glucitol), poly(1-acrylamido-1-deoxy-D-glucitol) and polyacrylamide is made. The effects of hydrogenation on the intrinsic viscosity of poly(2-deoxy-2-methacrylamido-D-glucose) is shown. The crosslinking of poly(1-acrylamido-1-deoxy-D-glucitol) as a side reaction was examined by 13C NMR spectroscopy.
