Notes: The inhibition of mild steel corrosion/in 0.5 M HCl solution by amphoteric surfactants (which contain both an anionic and a cationic moiety in the same molecule) of general formula: (R alkyl group of C10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17) is shown to confirm Langmuir's adsorption isotherms. At a given concentration of surfactants, the inhibiting action increases with the increase of carbon chain length. The influence of both inductive and steric hindrance effects of methylene groups in -R on the inhibition efficiency has also been mentioned.

Notes: Theoretical and experimental treatments of the shape of Fizeau fringes crossing a fibre of Trilobal-shaped cross-section assumed to consist of a single medium are presented. A New mathematical expression is derived and used to estimate the refractive indices and the birefringence of Perlon (polycaprolactam) fibre. The resulting data are used to calculate the polarizability per unit volume. Cauchy's dispersion constants, the isotropic refractive index and the variation of refractive index with temperature are reported. The results are in agreement with previously published data. The data are illustrated by microinterferograms.

Notes: An approach to the problem of producing poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) graft copolymer exhibiting good mechanical properties and electrical resistance that suits its uses as an electrical insulator has been investigated. Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto PVC using γ-radiation as initiator has been studied. PVC was chemically modified, and the effect of the change in its chemical and physical structure on its properties was investigated. In this grafting system, different solvents were tried and it was found that the most suitable diluent for the grafting of MMA onto PVC films is methanol. An appreciable improvement in tensile properties of the graft copolymer was achieved. The most suitable degree of grafting, concerning electrical insulation efficiency, was found to be near 80%. Gel determination in the graft copolymer was carried out, and a crosslinked network structure was formed. Increasing the crosslinking content in the graft copolymer leads to a decrease in the extent of swelling due to the less diffusivity of the solutions through such network structure.

Notes: The stress-strain (S/S) and the swelling equilibrium behavior in a series of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) networks were investigated and the results were employed to evaluate the effects of varying the cure conditions on the crosslinking efficiency in these networks. The S/S curve of completely swollen vulcanizates is in agreement with the predictions of rubber elasticity theory, while that of dry or partially swollen vulcanizates is fully described by the Mooney-Rivlin equation. ϰ values determined in benzene were found to vary linearly with vr (vr = equilibrium volume fraction of rubber in swollen sample). Crosslinking efficiency, moles of crosslinks produced per moles of crosslinking agent used, ranges from 3.7 in peroxide-cured EPDM (55% wt ethylene and 2.6% unsaturation) to 0.15 in similarly cured EPR (43% ethylene). Efficiency in the latter system improves to 0.6 by addition of a coagent (sulfur) to the cure formula. Crosslinking efficiency in EPDM (55% ethylene) was found to increase in the order: peroxide- 〉 resin- 〉 sulfur-cured. In the EPDM sulfur vulcanizates, changing the terpolymer in the cure formula resulted in significant changes in the crosslinking efficiency.

Notes: The 100-MHz proton NMR spectra of commercial and laboratory-prepared poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) have been measured in various solvents at high temperature (80-150°C). Tacticity in PVC was determined by the analysis of the β-proton spectrum. The spectrum was calculated assuming that the PVC chain consists of tetrad sequences of monomer units and that their distribution in the chain is described by a simple Bernoulli-sequence statistics with a Pm (the probability of isotactic placement) of 0.45 for commercial PVC polymerized at 50°C. Tacticity calibration curves based on measurements made for the polymer in pentachloroethane and β-dichlorobenzene were established, and they provide a simple method for the measurement of tacticity in PVC directly from the observed spectra. Excluding samples prepared in butyraldehyde solution, the formation of syndiotactic structures in PVC (prepared by free-radical polymerization) was found to be favored by lowering the polymerization temperature. This preference is due to an increase in the activation enthalpy of 510 cal/mole which is required for forming an isotactic placement in the chain during the propagation step.

Notes: The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by some naturally occuring substance was evaluated in absence and presence of 600 and 1200 mg H2S/l in 3% NaCl aqueous solution and pH of 3 and temperature of 25 °C. These naturally occurring substance included the water extracts, coumarines and fatty matters extracts of some Egyptian plants. These plants included:(1) Nigella Sativa (Family Ranunculacease) (Extract (1), 2) Coriandrum Sativum (Family Umbelliferea) (Extract II), 3) Ricinus communis (Family Euphorbiaceae) (Extract III). The galvanostatic anodic and cathodic polarization measurements were used for studying the corrosion behavior of mild steel and evaluation of the percentage inhibition of the undertesting extracts of these three plants and also preparation of fatty matters and coumarin fractions were mentioned.

Notes: A series of polyurethanes (PU) prepolymers with NCO/OH ratios of 2.1:1 and 1.9:1 were prepared by reacting hydrogenated methylene di-p-phenyl diisocyanate (HMDI) with triol mixtures of TP740 (molecular weight 740) and TP1540 (molecular weight 1540). Stress-strain (S/S) and swelling equilibrium measurements were performed using thin-film samples prepared by moisture-curing the prepolymer at room temperature. The swollen PU networks gave an S/S curve which is fully described by rubber elasticity theory. The Mooney-Rivlin constant C1 (swollen) was found to increase directly while the molecular weight between crosslinks Mc decreases as the number of branches per cubic centimeter is increased. The solvent - polymer interaction parameter χ determined in benzene was 0.077 + 0.97vr, where vr is the volume fraction of rubber in the swollen network. The crosslink density v′, and Mc were calculated from the relations v′ = pNB and Mc = 0.667 B-1, where B denotes moles of branches per gram, and were found to be in good agreement with v′ and Mc established from S/S and swelling-equilibrium measurements. In calculating v′ and Mc, the water-PU crosslinking reaction at room temperature was assumed to occur mainly through the formation of a urea linkage.

Notes: A sample of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and a polar plasticizer consisting of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was prepared and found to possess inconvenient electrical properties (permittivity, dielectric loss, and conductivity). Different samples of PVC compositions were formulated from the PVC-DOP-DBP system and also variable proportions of a copolymer of 1-octadecene-maleic anhydride or its hexadecylester. Lead stearate as a heat stabilizer and kaolin as a filler were added. The effect of copolymer structure on the electrical properties of the PVC-DOP-DBP system was studied to obtain a plasticized PVC of good electrical insulation character. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: An improved stress-strain (S/S) method based on rubber elasticity theory and swelling equilibrium measurements was used to investigate the S/S behavior and the solvent swelling properties of nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) and also to study the effects of varying the cure agent and the curing conditions on the crosslinking efficiency in NBR vulcanizates. The S/S curve of completely swollen NBR vulcanizates is, as expected, in agreement with rubber elasticity theory, while that of dry or partially swollen vulcanizates is well described by the Mooney-Rivlin equation. Determined in benzene, χ was 0.494, compared to 1.338 in cyclohexane and 2.124 in n-heptane. The degree of crosslinking and the crosslinking efficiency in the NBR vulcanizates, moles of crosslinks produced per mole of crosslinking agent employed in the formula, are largely dependent on the nature of the crosslinking agent used and increase in the following order: peroxide, sulfur tetramethylthiuram disulfide, sulfur N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazolesulfenamide, sulfur benzothiazyl disulfide, and finally tetramethylthiuram disulfide.
