Notes: A thermodynamic study of oxygen-implanted Si0.5Ge0.5 alloy based on an XPS analysis is reported for the first time. The alloy was grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and was implanted with high-dose oxygen ions (up to 1.8 × 1018 cm-2) at an energy of 200 keV. The changes of Si, Ge and O activities with the concentration of oxygen were calculated using the THERMO-CALC program, and chemical potentials of these elements throughout the oxygen-buried region were plotted out according to the chemical state information obtained from XPS depth profiling results.Transport during implantation and in subsequent annealing follows the gradient of chemical potential: elemental Si migrates into the oxygen-rich layer to form SiO2 by the replacement of Ge in Ge oxides. This leads to a decrease of the total free energy for the system of Si, Ge and O in the sample. The description of the system in terms of activities and chemical potential enables true diffusion profiles to be used in place of phenomenological descriptions such as ‘snowplough’ or ‘pile-up’.

Notes: A novel series of water-soluble polyester surfactants has been prepared by the polymerization of SIPM, PA, and PEG. The unique structural features of these surfactants have been confirmed by IR and NMR analyses. These water-soluble polyester surfactants have been found to exhibit excellent surface active properties including surface tension, low-foaming, solubilization, and dispersant properties for disperse dyes.

Notes: Two methods based on the free-volume theory of transport are developed for the estimation of diffusion coefficients for trace amounts of solvents in amorphous polymers. The first method uses diffusivity data for a polymer-solvent system above the glass transition temperature to estimate the temperature dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient below this temperature. In the second method, mutual diffusion coefficients are estimated for a particular polymer-solvent system both above and below the glass transition temperature using no diffusivity data for the system. The predictions of the proposed theory are compared with diffusivity data for the n-pentane-polystyrene and ethylbenzene-polystyrene systems.

Notes: New diffusivity data are presented for solvent diffusion in poly(vinyl acetate), poly(methyl methacrylate), and polystyrene. These data are used to test the predictive and correlative capabilities of a recently proposed free-volume theory of diffusion. Comparisons of data and theory showed that the proposed theory provided an accurate description of diffusion in concentrated polymer solutions.

Notes: 2,6-Di-t-butylphenol and oligo(ethylene oxide) bound covalently to polyisocyanate were synthesized and characterized. The ionic conductivities of their Li, Na, and K phenolates were studied at various temperatures. The conductivities were in the range of 10-7-10-5 S/cm at 30°C. The conductivity of Na and K salts was approximately 102 greater than that of the Li salts. The t-butyl groups serve to dissociate K and Na ions from the phenoxide. The cations, therefore, are more mobile as a result increasing the conductivity. The temperature dependence of ionic conductivity suggests that the migration of ions is controlled by segmental motion of the polymer, shown by linear curves obtained in Vogel-Tammann-Fulchere plots. The polyisocyanate backbone is a rather stiff structure, however, a flexible oligo(ethylene oxide) side chain forms complexes with metal ion. Since the ion transport is associated with the local movement of polymer segments, the rigidity of the polymer backbone does not have much influence on the ion mobility.

Notes: New copolymers were prepared from methacrylate and methacrylamide derivatives of cholic acid and methacrylic acid by free radical polymerization in solution. The copolymers were characterized by solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The copolymers all have a single glass transition temperature located between the glass transition temperature of the two corresponding homopolymers. The copolymers were found to be random, and the chemical composition in the final products was close to the original monomer composition in the feed prior to polymerization. Water absorption measurements showed that the water absorption capacity of the copolymers increases from about 10% to about 35% with increasing molar ratio of methacrylic acid in the copolymers.

Notes: Results from a number of theories for the concentration dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient in dilute polymer solutions are examined, and clarifications are made as to what forms of the equations for these theories should be used in comparisons with experimental diffusivity data. An evaluation of the available theories for the concentration dependence of the diffusivity under theta conditions is carried out using experimental diffusivity data taken using sharp fractions of polystyrene. It is concluded that the Pyun - Fixman theory appears to provide the most promising method for estimating the concentration dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient in dilute polymer solutions at the present time.
