Description / Table of Contents: In the amorphous phase of PVC exists an orientation correlation between neighbouring molecular segments, which disappears under the influence a plastisizer. At extraction of the plastisizer with n-heptan these correlations don't reappear, in contrast to extraction with ether. The extraction with n-heptan leads to a PVC with a low density of 1.24 g · cm-3. Measurements of the specific heat show an extremely high peak below Tg, comparable with the melting peak of a crystalline phase. The diffusion and extraction of the plastisizer and the influence of annealing were studied by small angle X-ray scattering. The results of measurements of the specific heat, wide angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopic studies are in accordance with the above concept.

Notes: We investigated cholesteric liquid crystals containing an anisotropic polymer network created by in situ photo-polymerization of a mesogenic diacrylate. In contrast to previous studies, we used a liquid crystalline diacrylate to achieve bistable switching between the reflecting Grandjean texture and the diffuse scattering focal conic texture. The switching behavior depends considerably on the orientation of the liquid crystal during the polymerization. For polymerization in the Grandjean texture, the response times for switching to the reflecting state were lowered compared to the pure liquid crystal. The chromaticity coordinates indicate that this new type of display is very promising for additive color mixing.

Description / Table of Contents: The morphology of thin films of PVC which were prepared by spreading diluted PVC solutions on water/methanol mixture as precipitation agent depends on the methanol concentration. Above methanol concentration of 19% by vol. globules with diameters between 20 to 200 nm are observed inside of the films by electron microscopy, below 17% by vol. the PVC films revealed no characteristic features. This result can be explained as diminution of the quality of the solvent in consequence of the diffusion of the precipitation agent into the PVC solution indicating a phase decay of the PVC solution. The diameters of the PVC globules inside of the films can be explained by OSTWALD ripening. The results were generalized and discussed with regard to the morphology of PVC obtained by bulk polymerization of vinyl chloride.

Description / Table of Contents: The morphology of high density polyethylene filled with chalk, suprasil and sodium chloride powder, respectively, has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy of the polished and etched surfaces. All composites show a different morphology of the polyethylene in the interfacial region. This effect is due to the different structure determining activities of the used fillers.

Description / Table of Contents: In the copolymerization of ethylene with vinyl acetate, vinyl acetate units are incorporated into the polyethylene chains. Thus, the unit cell of the polyethylene structure is enlarged. The increase of the lattice parameters was determined by wide angle x-ray scattering. Based on the obtained result a structure model of ethylene-vinylacetate copolymers is suggested.
