Notes: Abstract Theν 5 andν 8 bands of propyne have been reinvestigated using a FTS spectrum between 900 and 1000 cm−1 with a resolution of 0.005 cm−1. About 1500 lines have been assigned. Some perturbations are clearly evident. Molecular parameters ofν 5=1 andν 8=1 levels were determined.

Notes: Polymerizations of amines and nitriles in a glow discharge generated by inductive coupling of 13.5-MHz radio frequency are investigated by employing the measurement of closed-system pressure change. It is found that nitrogen in those compounds are incorporated into polymer in a nearly stoichiometric manner and that the polymerization of those compounds are very much similar to that of hydrocarbons. Hydrogen detachments, opening of double bond and/or cyclic structure, opening of triple bond including C≡N, and opening of aromatic and heteroaromatic structures contribute to polymerization of amines and nitriles.

Notes: The polymerization of hydrocarbons was investigated by measuring the hydrogen yield during the glow discharge polymerization in a closed system. It was found that the pressure change in the glow discharge polymerization of hydrocarbons was mainly due to the production of hydrogen and to the loss of vapor phase monomer by polymerization. The opening of triple or double bonds and cyclic structures plays an important role in the polymerization of hydrocarbons; however, these are not exclusive mechanisms. The major polymerization mechanism for saturated normal hydrocarbons seems to be by the formation of free radicals due to hydrogen abstraction and the recombination of these primary radicals. The polymerization due to this mechanism also seems to occur concurrently during the polymerization of hydrocarbons with multiple bond and/or cyclic structures. Aromatic hydrocarbons polymerize with very low hydrogen production, indicating that the utilization of an aromatic double bond is the major mechanism of polymerization.

Notes: Surface acetylation of cellophane to afford an asymmetric membrane having high desalination ability (as high as 98% sodium chloride rejection) is described. The films were characterized by multiple-internal-reflectance microscopy (MIR), dyeing tests, light microscopy, and determination of water and sodium chloride transport properties in reverse osmosis cells. Surface modification employing acetyl chloride and acetic anhydride was studied in detail: the influence of the cellophane employed, the degree of cellophane activation, reaction time, reagent concentration, and diluent were assessed. Mixed acetylation reactions are also discussed as well as an evaluation of various postconditioning treatments used to increase desalination.

Notes: The meso- and d,l-diastereomers of o-bis(epoxyethyl)benzene have been synthesized and identified. The diastereomers were polymerized by a variety of catalysts to give a polymer which has mainly isochroman recurring units as a result of a cyclopolymerization mechanism. Some features of the polymerization with the triisobutylaluminum catalyst system have been studied. The rates of polymerization of the monomers and the transition temperatures of the resulting polymers have been determined. The results are explained on the basis of a controlled intramolecular propagation and a stereospecific polymerization.

Notes: Styrene oxide has been polymerized by the triisobutylaluminum-water catalyst system. Kinetic studies of the effects of varying the monomer, triisobutylaluminum, and water concentrations in benzene solutions have been made. Styrene oxide was consumed in two reactions: an initial fast one producing trimer and a slower reaction forming higher molecular weight polymer.
