Notes: The reaction between bis(diisopropyl) thiophosphoryl disulfide (DIPDIS) and silica has been investigated. The study reveals that DIPDIS can be used as a coupling agent for silica. The chemical bond between the silanol groups of silica and DIPDIS has been established through the isolation and characterization of isopropyl alcohol that is eliminated from the reaction. The chemical nature of the bond is also supported by the IR analysis of the reaction products of silica and DIPDIS obtained both in the presence and absence of rubber. From the exploratory studies it is indicated that DIPDIS can also react with NR even during mixing of ingredients. When used with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) or N-oxydiethylene-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide (OBTS) in the presence of silica, DIPDIS exhibits notable activation of cure and enhances the torque, modulus, tensile strength, and the scorch safety.

Notes: The effect of various substituted amines on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by ferric laurate - amine as the initiator system has been studied in carbon tetrachloride medium at 60°C. Amines used are n-butyl amine, di-n-butyl amine. The rate of polymerization is found to follow the order: tertiary 〉 secondary 〉 primary amine. From the detailed kinetic studies it was found that the overall polymerization rate can be expressed by the equation: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ R_p = \frac{{k_p }}{{k_t^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} }}(k_1 f)^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} [{\rm Monomer}][{\rm Fe}^{3 + } ]^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} [{\rm Amine}]^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} $\end{document} The relative activity of the different amines has been found to be dependent on the relative electron-donating tendency of the substituents present in the amine. The mechanism of the polymerization is discussed on the basis of these results, and various kinetic constants are evaluated.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate with cupric laurate in combination with N,N-dimethyl formamide as initiator was studied in carbon tetrachloride medium at 60°C. The rate of polymerization was found to be proportional to the 3/2th power of the monomer concentrations and to the square root of both cupric laurate and DMF concentrations. Spectroscopic investigations indicated a ternary complex formation involving cupric ion, methyl methacrylate, and DMF. A reaction scheme is suggested on the basis of these results and various kinetic constants have been evaluated.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate was studied in carbon tetrachloride medium with ferric laurate, a metal soap, in combination with n-hexyl amine as the initiator system at 60°C. The rate of polymerization was found to be linear with the monomer concentration and proportional to the square root of both ferric ion and amine concentration. A reaction scheme involving initial complex formation between ferric ion and amine and subsequent reaction of the complex with the solvent molecule to produce free radicals responsible for initiation of polymerization has been postulated to account for the observed results.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by cupric laurate in combination with benzoin has been investigated in carbon tetrachloride medium at 60°C. The rate of polymerization was found to be proportional to the square root of both cupric ion and benzoin concentrations, and to the 1.5th power of the monomer concentration. Spectral studies indicated that there is a complex formation between cupric ion and the monomer methyl methacrylate. A reaction scheme, based on initial formation of the complex and its subsequent reaction with benzoin to produce the free radicals responsible for initiation has been postulated to explain the observed results.

Notes: Investigations on the interactions of the synergistic pair of accelerators comprising of thiocarbamyl sulfenamide and 2-(iminodithio)benzothiazole have been carried out through hplc. N-cyclopentamethylene thiocarbamyl-N'-oxydiethylene sulfenamide, N-oxydiethylenethiocarbamyl-N'-cyclopentamethylene sulfenamide (OTCS), 2-morpholinodithiobenzothiazole, and 2-piperidinodithiobenzothiazole (PDB) have been selected as the reactants which, when suitably combined, provide most effective accelerator systems capable of generating heat and age resistant vulcanizates. The OTCS-PDB system has been found to yield vulcanizates which exhibit the greatest crosslink density, scorch safety, and highest modulus and tensile strength. An attempt has been made to explain the higher activity of the binary systems studied as compared to that obtained from comparable thiocarbamyl sulfenamide plus dibenzothiazyl disulfide system. Zin-dithiocarbamates have been found to influence the curing reactions depending upon the composition of the mixed accelerators. Cyclohexyl thiophthalimide, a versatile cure retarder, reacts with the accelerators to yield cyclohexyl thiomorpholine and cyclohexyl thiopiperidine, as the case may, which also have a profound effect upon cure retardation as noticed in the present investigation.

Notes: The synergistic activity of bis(diisopropyl) thiophosphoryl disulfide (DIPDIS) in the presence of dithio bis(N-β-OH ethyl piperazine) (DTEP), a safe amine-based accelerator, has been studied both in gum and filled stock vulcanization of NR. This study, concerning the effect of variation of sulfur concentration on the gum vulcanization of NR, reveals that, although modulus values of the vulcanizates increase with the level of sulfur, the tensile strength values attain a maximum at 1.5 phr sulfur for an equimolar (4.5:4.5) concentration of DIPDIS and DTEP. The concentration of accelertors was varied from 6 mmol to 18 mmol phr, keeping the molar ratio at 1:1. It was noticed that, although the torque and modulus values increased, the tensile strength values decreased after attaining a maximum at 12 mmolar concentration of DIPDIS and DTEP accelerators, when the sulfur concentration was fixed at 1.5 phr. The synergistic activity of DIPDIS-DTEP accelerated mixes is considered to arise from the generation of some intermediate accelerators that are governed by the proportion of accelerators, sulfur, filler, etc., present in the mix. Some investigations were also carried out to optimize the amount of carbon black at these fixed levels of accelerators and sulfur. A regarding tensile strength, it increased up to a loading of 50 phr carbon black, but beyond this level a gradual fall in the value was noticed. However, modulus, torque, and hardness increased with the concentration of carbon black. The optimum dispersion of carbon black for this system was obtained following Lee's method. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The effect of 1-cyclohexylthio-2-mercaptobenzimidazole (CMB) on the vulcanization of NR accelerated by N-oxydiethylene thiocarbamyl-N′-oxydiethylene sulfenamide (OTOS) has been studied. It is found that CMB delays the onset of cure and generates 2-mercaptobenzimidazole during vulcanization. The results indicate the retarding as well as antioxidant activity of CMB.
