Notizen: Abstract Calcitonin (CT), a calcium-regulating hormone, lowers the calcium level in serum by inhibiting bone resorption. Because CT may play a role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis, genetic variations in or adjacent to the CT gene may be associated with variations in bone mineral density (BMD). The present study examined the correlation between a dinucleotide (cytosine-adenine; CA) repeat polymorphism at the CT locus and BMD in 311 Japanese postmenopausal women (mean age, 64.1 years). Seven alleles were present in this population; each allele contained 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19, or 20 CA repeats. Thus, we designated the respective genotypes A10, A11, A16, A17, A18, A19, and A20. The A10 and A17 alleles were the predominant alleles in the population studied. Z scores (a parameter representing deviation from the age-specific weight-adjusted average BMD) were compared between individuals that possessed one or two alleles of each genotype and those that did not possess the allele. Subjects who possessed one or two A10 alleles had lower BMD Z scores than those who did not (lumbar 2–4 BMD Z score; −0.148 ± 1.23 vs 0.182 ± 1.54; P = 0.04). No significant relationships were observed between allelic status and background data or biochemical parameters. The significant association observed between BMD and genetic variations at the CT locus implies that polymorphism at this locus may be a useful marker for the genetic study of osteoporosis.

Notizen: The effect of different thermal treatments on the degree and type of orientation produced by cold drawing three polyolefin films: polyethylene, polypropylene, and polybutene-1, was studied by two complementary techniques: x-ray diffraction for the measurement of crystal orientation and birefringence for the measurement of the total film orientation. Variations in the texture of these polymer films were characterized by these techniques as well as by density, tensile stress measurements and photomicrographs. The birefringence-strain data showed a decrease in birefringence values at a given strain as the polymer side group size increased. This decrease appears to be associated with a more symmetrical polarizability ellipsoid and hence a decrease in crystal birefringence. The birefringence-strain curves for the same polymer system showed a decrease in birefringence value at a constant strain with increased annealing. X-ray diffraction data indicate that the a and b axes in both polyethylene and polybutene-1 film orient by different amounts at a given strain. Polypropylene, on the other hand, shows equal amounts orientation of the a and b axes. The different orientation behavior for these polymer systems is discussed in terms of variation in the ease with which polymer crystals may be deformed.

Notizen: The effect of molecular orientation on the linear swelling of nylon 6 caused by absorption of water was studied using two kinds of oriented films, melt drawn and cold drawn. The molecular orientation causes anisotropy in swelling at all humidities such that the swelling is larger in the orientation direction than in the directions perpendicular to it. The large contribution of crystalline orientation to this phenomenon was expected for the melt drawn film which has practically no amorphous orientation. An analysis with a two-phase morphological model reveals that the distance between the crystallites is a prominent factor controlling the degree of linear swelling, and that the anisotropy of swelling arises from the change in the distribution of crystallites due to orientation. By comparing the result for the melt drawn film with that for the cold drawn film, which has considerable amorphous orientation, it was proven that molecular orientation in the amorphous phase where swelling actually occurs does not depend so much on the degree of swelling as on the distribution of crystallites.

Notizen: The overall crystallization rate of polypropylene fractions was studied dilatometrically, and the crystallization behavior was considered in relation to the stereoregularity of the samples. The study includes a photomicroscopic analysis of the nucleation, formation, and growth of spherulites, as well as an evaluation by means of rapid x-ray scanning techniques of the increase of crystallinity within the spherulites. A theory was applied to the discussion of crystallization behavior in which two stages of growth were introduced: (a) growth at the spherulite interface, and (b) secondary crystallization within the spherulite. These were described in terms of Avrami-type equations with differing parameters.
