Notes: Derivatives of poly(vinyl alcohol), styrene-maleic acid copolymer, cellulose, and gelatin have been made which incorporate aromatic azide groups into the polymer molecule. The relative rates at which these polymers become crosslinked on exposure to ultraviolet light were measured. A preliminary discussion is given of the structural factors involved in the photolytic decomposition and subsequent coupling reaction.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Hydrolysestabilität einiger thermoplastischer Poly(ester-urethan)-Elastomerer in Abhängigkeit vom molekularen Aufbau wird untersucht.
Notes: This paper reviews several types of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers, and the unique properties these polymers have. In discussing the hydrolysis stability of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers the suitability of these polymers for such study was pointed out. A relationship between poly(ester-urethane) composition in terms of methylene group concentration, hardness and chain stiffness, and hydrolysis stability was shown. The dominant role of polyurethane acid number in thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane) hydrolysis stability was demonstrated and the origin of this unexpected acid number was discussed. The pronounced stabilizing action of added poly(carbodiimide) in thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane) hydrolysis was shown, as well as the severe destabilizing action of a carboxylic acid, stearic acid. The hydrolysis stabilities of thermoplastic poly(ester-urethane) elastomers based on poly(∊-caprolactone) glycol and on poly(hexamethylene carbonate) glycol were also described.

Notes: Summary The PAP-technique and antibodies to myosin were used to demonstrate the prerequisites for vasoconstriction in the juxtaglomerular part of the preglomerular arteriole as compared with its proximal segment in rats and mice. In contrast with the myosin-positive/renin-negative proximal part of the afferent arteriole no myosin-like activity could be demonstrated in its distal, renin-positive part. In accordance, no thick myofilaments were found in fully differentiated juxtaglomerular epithelioid cells replete with mature secretory granules. Stimulation of the renin-angiotensin system was followed by an increase of the reninpositive/myosin-negative portions of the preglomerular arteriole. Marked interspecies and internephron variations in the length of this vessel segment under control and stimulated conditions were observed. The juxtaglomerular part of the preglomerular arteriole close to the macula densa seems therefore to have only limited capabilities for vasoconstriction. This finding may be of importance regarding the tubulo-glomerular feedback, a mechanism allegedly triggered by the so-called ‘macula densa-signal’. It is suggested that this non-contractile segment of the afferent arteriole may represent the renal vascular receptor responsible for the increase of renin secretion during pressure reduction. Unlike the afferent arterioles, most of the efferent arterioles showed the highest level of their weak but distinct myosin-like immunoreactivity in the juxtaglomerular region, indicating some efferent juxtaglomerular vasoconstrictive ability.

Notes: A comparison has been made between the infrared spectra of native cellulose and those of various closely related materials differing in each instance from cellulose I in one salient feature. These materials have been compared individually with groups of others, each differing from cellulose in a further salient feature. Considered in conjunction with the spectra of a few formally more distant relatives such as tetrahydropyran and the simple alcohols, these empirical comparisons can contribute to an understanding of the influence on the spectrum of hydrogen bonding, hydroxyl groups (through H—D exchange and o-acylsubstitution), the type of anomeric and positional linkage, attachment at a specific carbon atom, the glycosidic link, and degree of polymerization. The comparative spectroscopy of cellulose, laminarin, amylose, and xylan permits correlation between these glucosans for about a dozen of the major bands or groups of bands in the spectra of the amorphous materials between ca. 3 and 13μ. An examination of the spectra of various crystalline modifications of cellulose lends support to various conclusions drawn by previous workers regarding the relationship between these forms. The effects of deuterating native and regenerated cellulose have been taken into account in considering band assignments. The intensity of the strong band near 8.6 μ (1160 cm.-1) is reduced on deuteration, and it is questioned whether this is consistent with its assignment to stretching in the glycosidic link (on the basis of its strong parallel polarization, etc.). The response to deuteration suggests that the band near 9.0 μ (1120 cm.-1) may be an association band of the type observed in primary and secondary alcohols and that the residual band near 8.9 μ (1120 cm.-1) may be identified with the antisymmetric ring-stretching vibration. The persistence of the strong bands between 9 and 10 μ (1100-1000 cm.-1) after deuteration, acetylation and, in the case of sugars, freeze drying, supports the conventional assignment to C—O stretching, perhaps coupled to C—C frequencies. The band near 10.1 μ (990 cm.-1) is eliminated on deuteration or hetero-geneous acetylation of cellulose. These and other facts suggest that it is connected with a vibration which is restricted in the crystallites. The band a t 11.2 μ (893 cm.-1) in cellulose and other β-linked glucosans is clearly connected with the C(1) group vibration. In much of this work the samples were examined as dispersions in pressed potassium chloride pellets. In the amorphous state the spectra of the smaller molecules resemble those of the corresponding polymers. It was also observed that freeze-dried samples, dispersed in potassium chloride, showed a slow reversion to the sharp spectrum characteristic of the crystal.

Notes: High-resolution SIMS images in conjunction with elastically backscattered electron and energy-dispersive x-ray images have been acquired from a polished slightly oxidized multiphase polycrystalline surface of Ni-Cu sulphide ore. Through correlation of data acquired by the three methods, the extent to which oxidation occurs is shown to be mineral dependent and related to the presence of macroscopic and microscopic surface heterogeneities. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: Linear D2-m-carborane-siloxanes with one, two, and three trifluoropropyl moieties per repeat unit were prepared by the condensation reaction between bisureidosilanes and carborane disilanol. Molecular weights between 100,000 and 220,000 were obtained. Compared to fluorosilicones, the trifluoropropyl-modified carborane-siloxanes exhibited greater thermal and oxidative stability and in certain cases comparable solvent resistance. The swelling index for carborane-siloxane elastomers decreased with increasing trifluoropropyl content, although this fluorocarbon moiety did compromise the thermal stability of the carborane system.

Notes: ESCA and contact angle measurements were used to characterize the surfaces of polypropylene and glass substrates exposed to CF4, CF3H, CF3Cl, and CF3Br plasmas. The use of both organic and inorganic substrates allowed clear distinction between treatments which led to plasma polymerization and treatments which caused grafting of functional groups directly to the substrate surfaces. CF4 plasmas were the only treatments studied which fluorinated polypropylene surfaces directly, without the deposition of a thin, plasma-polymerized film. CF3H polymerized in a plasma, while CF3Cl and CF3Br plasmas caused chlorination and bromination of polypropylene surfaces, respectively. Correlations were made between the active species present in the plasmas and the surface chemistry observed on the treated polypropylene substrates.

Notes: Both the rate and apparent equilibrium of propane sorption in glassy polystyrene were increased after swelling the polymer by exposure to a highly sorbing vapor. Cyclic sorption experiments revealed that the increase in rate and apparent equilibrium of sorption due to the preswelling treatment decayed only during vacuum aging. The presence of low levels of propane in the polymer during aging, however, appeared to arrest the decay in sorption capacity. These composite results, taken in conjunction with the results of previous work in our laboratory, suggest that the component of the total sorption which resides in nonequilibrium, distended interchain gaps retards the chain motions which otherwise lead to consolidation of the dilated glass.

Notes: Sorption kinetics and equilibria for methanol, ethanol, and n-propanol in 0.544 μm diameter poly(methyl methacrylate) microspheres were determined at 35°C over a wide range of relative pressures. Sorption isotherms were concave to the pressure axis at low relative pressures and convex to the pressure axis at higher relative pressures. These results, considered in the context of recently reported data for high pressure sorption of gases in polymeric glasses, suggest that the S-shaped isotherms reported here are examples of a generalized isotherm which describes sorption behavior of all penetrants in glassy polymers if an appropriate range of concentration is traversed by the experimental protocol. The effects of dialating the microspheres by preswelling with methanol were studied by subsequent low pressure sorption of water, methanol, ethanol, and n-propanol at 35°C. The preswollen microspheres exhibited initially higher sorption capacities than the as-Received samples, but tended to consolidate with time following the preswelling treatment. The aging process, monitored by periodic short-term sorption with the various penetrant probes, was arrested by contacting the microspheres with an activity of n-propanol sufficient to maintain a sorbed concentration of approximately 1 wt %. The aging was significantly retarded by the presence of low concentrations of water and ethanol. Conversely, the aging process appeared to be essentially unaffected by the presence of correspondingly low concentrations of methanol. The complex kinetics describing the sorption of the various penetrants ranged from Fickian diffusion to polymer relaxation-controlled absorption, depending upon penetrant, relative pressure, and prior exposure history. The low temperature preswelling of the microspheres markedly increased the rate of sorption as well as the respective apparent equilibrium sorption.
