Notes: The effect of temperature, activator concentration, and polymerization time on the anionic polymerization of 2-pyrrolidone was studied using the method of statistical planning of the experiments. Sodium tert-butoxide or sodium dihydrido-bis(2-methoxyethoxy)aluminate was used as initiator; N-acetylpyrrolidone served as activator in both cases. Results obtained with both initiation systems were presented in the form of explicit mathematical equations.

Notes: Residual hydroxyl groups of commercially available cellulose acetate (39.9% acetyl) have been reacted partially with phenyl isocyanate. The characteristics of these modified polymers have been studied. Membranes have been cast from these polymers to study their potentiality as reverse osmosis membranes. The work has been further extended to investigated the stability of these modified CA under the influence of high temperature and γ irradiation.

Notes: Difunctional castor oil has been reacted with thioglycolic acid for the synthesis of castor oil dithioglycolate (CODT). Elastomeric products have been obtained from CODT alone and in combination with liquid polysulfide polymer LP-33 by oxidative cure with manganese dioxide. Semireinforced (SRF) carbon black has been used as a filler. CODT has also been evaluated as a flexibilizer for liquid epoxy resin (Synpol 200).

Notes: Fibers spun from blends of small percentage of plastic grade polypropylene (HMPP) with fiber grade polypropylene (PP) are studied for drawing behavior. A factorial design of experiment is used for a two-stage drawing process with variables, such as percent of HMPP component, first stage draw ratio and temperature, and second stage temperature. Optimization is carried out for breaking stress and modulus of drawn filaments. Breaking stress of up to 0.74 GPa and initial modulus of 7.34 GPa is possible by such an optimization process. These properties are observed for 6% HMPP blend composition. Heat setting of drawn filaments show little changes up to 140°C heat-setting temperature. Large scale structural changes with rapid drop in mechanical properties is observed for 150-160°C heat-set samples.

Notes: Eight new diisocyanate monomers containing s-triazine ring have been prepared from the parent diacids via the Curtius rearrangement of the corresponding diacyl azides. The parent diacids were synthesised by the reaction of p- and m-hydroxybenzoic acid with 6-methoxy-2,4-dichloro-s-triazine, 6-phenoxy-2,4-dichloro-s-triazine, 6-phenyl-2,4-dichloro-s-triazine, and 2-diphenylamino-4,6-dichloro-s-triazine respectively. Polyurethanes have been synthesised by solution polymerization of these diisocyanates with ethylene glycol in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC). The resulting polymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy, viscosity measurement, solubility tests, and softening points.

Notes: Polyamides were synthesized from diacids containing a s-triazine ring and two aromatic diamines, namely 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenylmethane (MDA), by direct polycondensation using the phosphorylation reaction. Polymers thus obtained were characterized by viscosity measurement, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, and solubility tests. These polyamides had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.51-0.77 dL/g, and were amorphous in nature. All the polymers were readily soluble in various organic solvents and did not lose weight below 270°C in air.

Notes: Ten new aromatic polyamides containing s-triazine rings in the main chain were synthesized by the low temperature interfacial polycondensation technique involving the reactions of each of the two s-triazine containing diacylchlorides, viz., 2,4-bis (4-chlorocarbonylphenoxy)-6-methoxy-s-triazine and 2,4-bis(3-chlorocarbonylphenoxy)-6-methoxy-s-triazine, with five aromatic diamines namely, 4,4′-bis(4-aminophenoxy)diphenyl sulfone, 4,4′-bis(3-aminophenoxy)diphenyl sulfone, 2,2-bis[4(4-aminophenoxy) phenyl] propane, 1,4 bis (4-amino-phenoxy) benzene, and 1,3-bis (4-aminophenoxy)benzene. The resulting polyamides were characterized by viscosity measurements, IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy, solubility tests, x-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry. The polyamides had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.16-1.06 dL/g in N,N-dimethylacetamide at 30°C. Most of the s-triazine containing polyamides dissolved readily at room temperature in polar solvents. Except for the polyamide PA-2, the polyamides did not lose weight below 350°C under a nitrogen atmosphere. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 1077-1085, 1997

Notes: A series of oriented tapes has been prepared from the blends consisting of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), with isotactic polypropylene (PP) and ethylene-propylene block copolymer (EPbC). The mechanical properties and structure-morphology of blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing microscopy, wide-and small-angle X-ray diffraction, and dynamic viscoelastometer. It is observed that blends are in-compatible in the 20-80% blend composition range. The two β-relaxation peaks each of PE and PP component appear in the dynamic spectra of these blends. The two peaks, however, merge into a very broad, single relaxation peak at lower blend compositions (9 and 18% blends), indicating reasonably good compatibility between the two blend components. Variation of PP and EPbC content in blends with HDPE affects the melting and crystallization temperature, crystallinity, crystallite dimensions, and crystallite and amorphous phase orientation of blend components, which, in turn, affect the mechanical properties of drawn tapes. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The tear energy (Gc) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and HDPE/ethylene copolymer blended drawn tapes in orientation direction has been studied systematically with respect to structural parameters. In all cases the values of Gc were in the range of 0.8-8.0 kJ m-2. The results showed a direct relationship between amorphous phase orientation and Gc of drawn tapes. The decrease in Gc with molecular orientation of tapes is due to the formation of large number of elongated voids at the interfibrillar regions and diminution of viscous flow occuring in the vicinity of the propagating crack tip. An increase in Gc in the range of 15-45% was obtained for HDPE blended tapes containing about 10% of the second-blend component either as ethylene-vinyl acetate or ethylene propylene-diene terpolymer or eth-ylene-propylene block copolymer. This relates to the increase in fraction of amorphous phase and extensive molecular network in the interfibrillar amorphous regions. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
