Notes: The reaction of hydrazine hydrate with manganic hydroxide and its application to the solution polymerization of methyl methacrylate has been studied. The kinetic evidence suggests that the hydrazine and the monomer are both adsorbed on the surface of the manganic hydroxide sol and that the decomposition of the hydrazine and the polymerization of the methyl methacrylate follow zero-order kinetics. The rate of polymerization increases slowly with increasing temperature, the activation energy for the polymerization being 4.9 ± 0.2 kcal/mole.

Notes: The kinetics of the emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by the cupric sulfate-hydrazine system in the presence of oxygen have been evaluated.A maximum rate of polymerization occurs at a cupric sulfate concentration of 1.8 × 10-4 mole liter-1. The adsorption of cupric ion on the micelles and the adsorption of soap on cupric hydroxide are discussed as an explanation of this effect.A reaction between hydrazine and methyl methacrylate produces a surface active agent which enhances the rate of polymerization and increases the number of particles at high ratios of monomer concentration to soap concentration. The kinetics follow the mechanism of Gershberg rather than that of Smith and Ewart, and the initiation of the emulsion polymerization appears to take place inside the micelle rather than in the aqueous phase as was proposed by van der Hoff for styrene. The activation energy for the complete process is 23.7 kcal mole-1.

Notes: A technique for examining heterogeneous copolymers with the phase microscope is described. This method is based on the use of a mounting medium that displays selective solubility toward the constituent materials, thereby masking one or more phases in order to provide suitable phase contrast and isolation of the constituent to be examined.

Notes: The electrochemical reduction of dibutyltin (Bu2Sn2+) at mercury electrodes has been investigated in aqueous media containing nitrate and chloride electrolytes using the techniques of direct current (DC) polarography, differential pulse (DP) polarography, DP voltammetry, and cyclic voltammetry. In 0.10 M nitrate media, the initial charge transfer process occurs at approximately -0.7 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) and is described by the equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm{Bu}}_{\rm{2}} {\rm{Sn}}_{\rm{(bulk)}}^{2 + } \to {\rm{Bu}}_{\rm{2}} {\rm{Sn}}_{\rm{(ads)}}^{2 + } + 2{\rm{e}}^ - \rightleftharpoons {\rm{Bu}}_{\rm{2}} {\rm{Sn}}_{\rm{(ads)}}^{..} $$\end{document} in which a reversible charge transfer occurs with completely surface-confined dibutyltin. However, when longer time domains at a hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) are used, the complexity of the electrochemistry increases, which is attributed to the occurrence of butyl exchange processes with the electrode mercury and consequent disruption of the film of adsorbed dibutyltin. In 0.50 M chloride media, the extent of adsorption is considerably less, and the processes, but not necessarily the postulated mechanism, correspond more closely to that described by previous workers for the reduction of dibutyltin compounds in ethanol-water mixtures.

Notes: A review of the various simultaneous ESR-electrochemical techniques that have been developed is presented. Special advantages and disadvantages of the stationary and flow-through cell configurations are described. A critical evaluation of the in situ ESR-electrochemical cells developed to date has also been made. A selected survey of applications is presented to illustrate the wide range of chemical information on redox reactions which can be obtained by the simultaneous ESR-electrochemical method.

Notes: Gold and platinum ultrathin ring microelectrodes (0.1-0.5 mm thick, 1.5-4 mm diameter) were made by sputtering, from fired metalloorganic paint, and from foil for use as sensors in a thick-layer wall-jet flow cell. An end-on array of three 0.1 μm × 0.5 mm gold band electrodes were mounted parallel to the flow direction in a thin-layer channel cell. These ultrathin sensors, along with a jet-centered carbon microdisk, were evaluated in the amperometric flow-injection mode for temporal stability, calibration sensitivity, detectivity, background signal, and flow rate dependence of the analytical signal using ferrocene samples in acetonitrile containing 10-4-10-2 M TEAP. The detectivity of gold paint ring electrodes made on borosilicate glass was 3-6 nM, an order of magnitude lower than any of the other electrodes tested. Analytical signals from gold paint and foil rings and the carbon microdisk had the best temporal stability. The current for the ultrathin band array in a channel cell was flow rate-independent, and the exponential dependence of cell current on flow rate was 0.11-0.14 for ultrathin rings in the thick-layer wall-jet mode.

Notes: Battery-powered, complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices have been used to develop a programmable function generator. When used in conjunction with commercially available, battery-powered potentiostats or electrometers and recording devices, the technique of field-based direct current stripping voltammetry becomes available. The instrumental performance of a range of modular, battery-powered instruments has been evaluated with conventional and microsized electrodes and compared with ac-powered laboratory instruments using conventionally sized electrodes. Stripping experiments with the field-based instrument and with microelectrodes can be carried out under linear potential sweep conditions because the limit of detection is similar to that obtained with transient techniques at conventional sized electrodes. Other simplifications to the instrumentation and voltammetric procedures that are valuable in field-based studies (e.g., neither stirring nor deoxygenation of the solutions is required) also are achieved by using microelectrodes and are illustrated by the determination of copper in a river water sample.
