    Notes: Molecular weights of Trogamid T® were determined by ultracentrifugation, light-scattering, osmometry and viscometry, molecular weight distributions by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and five different fractionation methods. The separation efficiency of GPC with N,N-dimethylformamide as solvent was tested with three different types of gels, crosslinked polystyrene, porous glass and crosslinked poly(vinyl acetate), the last one yielding the best results. Solution fractionations show better results than precipitation methods. All fractionations gave far too small apparent non-uniformities. After correction according to the non-uniformities of the fractions the results corresponded to those of the other methods. All methods resulted in U = M̄w/M̄n - 1 = 0,7 for the technical product Trogamid T®. The discrepancy to U = 1 of a Schulz-Flory distribution can be explained by the influence of the path of reaction.

    Notes: The viscosity of solutions of poly(decyl methacrylate)s, PDMA, in 1-pentanol (thermodynamically poor solvent) and in toluence or isooctane (good solvents) was measured up to shear rates of 3 · 104s-1 by means of rotational viscosimeters. The observed pronounced shear thinning is for all solutions well described by the theory of Graessley, with the extension, introduced by Ito. Two parameters, resulting from the evaluation of the flow curves on the basis of the above theory, are discussed: τ0, a characteristic relaxation time of the polymer chain, is found to be in the range of ms. ηfric, a frictional parameter, independent of shear rate, amounts upto 50% of the zero-shear viscosity for the measured solutions. Both, τ0 and ηfric, increase with decreasing solvent quality, increasing molecular weight, and increasing concentration, in accord with theory. A comparatively sharp downward bend, separating two power-law regimes, shows up with moderately concentrated solutions, as the shear rate exceeds about 103 to 104 s-1. This transition is tentatively interpreted as an orientation of the long side chains of PDMA.

    Description / Table of Contents: Metal-matrix Composites with Metallic GlassesMetallic glass ribbons are well known for their very high tensile strengths. Since they offer an attractive potential of low-cost volume production, the development of a metallic glass-metal matrix composite should be very attractive. This paper reports first results on the feasibility of fabricating such composites by surface plating or incorporation by various techniques.The influence of fabrication methods on the interfacial bonding was investigated by means of cross-sectional light and electron microscopy.
    Notes: Metallglas-Bänder zeichnen sich durch sehr hohe Zugfestigkeit und kostengünstige Herstellung aus, so daß die Entwicklung eines Metallglas-Metallmatrix-Verbundwerkstoffes ausgesprochen interessant erscheint.Die vorliegende Arbeit berichtet über erste Ergebnisse, solche Verbundwerkstoffe durch Oberflächenbeschichten, verschiedene Einbettmethoden bzw. ein Festkörperreaktionsverfahren herzustellen.Dabei wird vorallem der Einfluß der Herstellungsmethoden auf die Grenzflächenhaftung licht- und elektronenmikroskopisch untersucht.

    Description / Table of Contents: Das Pfropfen von Methylmethacrylat auf Baumwolle wurde untersucht, indem organsche Moleküle als Photosensibilisatoren verwendet wurden. Eine Reihe von Parametern der Reaktion wurden untersucht, und die Ergebnisse wurden mit denen aus unsensibilisierten Experimenten verglichen. Eine Pfropfung von ca. 200% kann bei Verwendung kommerziell erhältlicher Bestrahlungslampen erzielt werden. Die Ergebnisse werden speziell hinisichtlich der Reaktivität der Initiatoren diskutiert.
    Notes: Grafting of methylmethacrylate onto cotton has been investigated, using organic molecules as photo-initiators. Several parameters of the reaction have been studied and the results have been compared with those obtained in unphotosensitized experiments. A grafting of about 200% may be achieved by irradiating with commercially available lamps. The results are discussed with special emphasis on the reactivity of the initiators.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die UV-induzierte Pfropfung auf Baumwolle wird für viele Monomere beschrieben. Die Reaktion wird allgemein mit radikalbildenden Initiatoren wie Phenylaceto-phenonderivaten, substituierten Benzophenonen, Quantacure SKS, Sacchariden etc. initiiert. %-Pfropfausbeute-Zeit-Kurven wurden bestimmt. Die Pfropfgeschwindigkeit liegt im Bereich 0,15 - 1,3% Pfropfausbeute pro min. In einigen Fällen war der Homopolymeranteil recht gering. Die Wirksamkeit des Initiators hängt sehr stark vom verwendeten Monomeren ab.
    Notes: UV-light induced grafting onto cotton is reported for a large variety of vinyl monomers. The reaction was generally initiated by free radical initiators such as phenylacetophenone derivatives, substituted benzophenone compounds, quantacure SKS, saccharides and so on. % grafting-time conversion curves were determined. The rate of grafting was lying in the range 0.15-1.3% grafting min-1. In some cases, the amount of homopolymer was quite low. The efficiency of the initiator is strongly dependent upon the monomer used.

    Notes: The blend behavior of polybenzimidazole and a series of polyaramides with polyvinylpyrrolidone is presented. Regardless of their chemical structure, all systems showed miscible blends over the composition range investigated. This may offer the opportunity to extend the application range of these basically structural materials into the area of functional polymers. Especially in membranes, the addition of the highly hydrophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone leads to a considerable increase in performance, i.e., in flux and antifouling behavior. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: In the present work, we use the binary insertion compound LiC12 to polymerize styrene, methyl methacrylate, butadiene, isoprene, and to copolymerize isoprene and styrene in various hydrocarbon solvents (aromatics and aliphatic) and etheral solvents. We show that the styrene polymerization in aromatic solvents gives better yields than in the etheral solvents, the polymer being atactic. Methyl methacrylate does not polymerize in toluene but does so completely in DME. More generally, the yields of polymerization are better with KC37 than with LiC12 because of the different capacities of the monomer to get into the carbon layers. The polymerization of dienes with LiC12 shows that the microstructures of the polymer obtained in π-or n-donor solvents are similar to the ones obtained by homogenous polymerization with Li cation in such solvents. However, for isoprene in cyclohexane, the results are different. The isoprene styrene copolymers are statistical ones and the mean length of styrene blocks is less than 5. The monomer interaction with the insertion compound and the growing chain geometry between the carbon layers are the facts which control either the stereospecificity of the polymerization or the selectivity of the copolymerization.

    Notes: We report detailed measurements on the thermal conversion of the tetrahydrothiophene prepolymer to poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) and show the influence of the elimination conditions on the properties of PPV and on light emitting devices (LEDs) prepared in the configuration ITO/PPV/Al. Electroluminescence correlates with a diode behavior in the current - voltage characteristic and can be observed for PPV heated at a minimum temperature of 130°C. Increase of the elimination temperature results in a red-shift of both the photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra by ≈10 nm, which enables us to control the color of our LEDs in a small range. We have observed that refered to the brightness of the devices the optimum elimination temperature is 160°C, and we show that a further increase of temperature does not improve the properties of PPV- LEDs.

    Description / Table of Contents: It is described a simplified method to prepare the free polyethylenesulfonic acid. It is a strong polybasic acid. The dissociation of polyethylenesulfonic acid is examined and compared with those of sulfuric acid and polyacrylic acid. The results are discussed by the Henderson-Hasselbalch-equation.On testing the efficiency as a hydrolysing catalyst, it is found, that the polyethylenesulfonic acid shows a different behaviour on carbohydrates and polypeptides. It splits sucrose with the same rate as sulfuric acid; proteins and peptides, however, are cleaveged 3-5 times more rapidly. It will be tried to give an explication of this phenomenon.
    Notes: Es wird ein vereinfachtes Verfahren zur Darstellung der freien Polyvinylsulfonsäure beschrieben. Sie ist eine starke, polybasische Säure. Ihr Dissoziationsverhalten wird elektrometrisch untersucht und mit dem der Schwefelsäure und der Polyacrylsäure verglichen. Die Ergebnisse werden an Hand der Henderson-Hasselbalch-Gleichung diskutiert.Bei der Untersuchung ihrer Wirksamkeit als hydrolysierender Katalysator wird festgestellt, daß die Polyvinylsulfonsäure gegenüber Kohlehydraten und Polypeptiden ein verschiedenes Verhalten zeigt. Sie spaltet Rohrzucker mit der gleichen Geschwindigkeit wie Schwefelsäure; bei Proteinen und Peptiden verläuft die Spaltung jedoch 3-5 mal schneller. Es wird versucht eine Erklärung für diese Erscheinung zu geben.
