    Notizen: The state of p-phenylphenol molecules in dioxane/water mixture, a commonly used reaction system for enzymatic polymerization of phenols and aromatic amines, was investigated by difference UV absorption spectroscopy and Fourier transform (FT) Raman spectroscopy. The aggregate of p-phenylphenols is found on the basis of the exciton peaks observed in difference UV absorption spectra. FT Raman spectroscopy demonstrates further that p-phenylphenol molecules aggregate together in “face to face” fashion. A simplified model is proposed for aggregation of p-phenylphenol molecules in dioxane/water mixture, which can elucidate the variation of the molecular weight of poly (p-phenylphenol) coupled in the reaction system. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) has been crosslinked in the presence of large poly(dimethylsiloxane) cyclics (92 repeating units). Approximately 26% by weight of the cyclics were threaded and permanently captured by the polymer network forming a topological isomeric structure referred to as a polymeric catenane. Nonentrapped cyclics were extracted with chloroform. Chemical analyses and micrographs showed evidence for crosslinking and cyclic entrapment, while physical testing demonstrated distinct differences in physical properties such as the glass transition temperature, ultimate mechanical properties, and dynamic viscoelastic response between the crosslinked control samples, and those containing cyclic poly(dimethylsiloxane).

    Notizen: The design of spiroorthocarbonate monomers (SOCs) and related structures is discussed with the aim of maximizing monomer polymerizability in the absence of undesirable byproducts. The successful syntheses of N,S-analogs of aryl- and alkaryl-SOCs are reported; these are monomers of structure where P and Q are —O— and —OC(CH3)2-, mp 156-158°C; and P and Q are —OCH2— and —OCH2—, mp 148-150°C. As is indicated by infrared spectra, the polymerization of both monomers is initiated by boron trifluoride etherate. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: A series of 24 cyclic siloxane-based liquid crystalline compounds was synthesized using conventional hydrosilation chemistry. Variables examined included ring size, spacer group length, and type and composition of pendant mesogeric groups. Both pentamethylhydro- and tetramethylhydrosiloxane rings were reacted with mesogens based on cholesterol, biphenyl, or equimolar mixtures of both. Four different length spacer groups containing terminal vinyl groups were used to attach the mesogens to the cyclic siloxane core. The thermotropic liquid crystalline phase behavior was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). A lengthening of spacer groups resulted in lower crystallization temperatures for the biphenyl-based compounds and lower glass transition temperatures for the cholesterol- and mixed mesogen-based compounds. The tetramethyl ring derivatives exhibited higher glass transition or crystallization temperatures than their pentamethyl counterparts. Biphenyl-based compounds exhibited low temperature crystalline phases while the cholesterol-based compounds exhibited low temperature glassy phases. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was oxidized selectively with molecular oxygen catalyzed by magnesium oxide-based polyalumazane-supported platinum complexes under mild conditions. The selective oxidation of C-H bond α to the oxygen atom of ether and the oxidative path to ester other than ring cleavage to carboxylic acid were controlled by carrying out the reaction at 60°C with nitroethane as solvent. The platinum loading and the reaction time greatly affected the yield of γ-butyrolactone whereas the selectivity always remained at 100%. 76.92% γ-butyrolactone was obtained with 0.2811 mmol platinum loading per gram support within 12 hr. The single product of the THF oxidation was confirmed by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data also confirmed the more recent report on the activation of the C-H bond by the null valent platinum from the viewpoint of supported platinum catalyst. The oxidation path was also suggested.

    Notizen: The mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation for various stress levels and thicknesses have been determined for single-edge notched specimens of polycarbonate and used to assemble a map. Three basic fatigue crack initiation mechanisms were identified and named as cooperative ductile (the damage zone formed ahead of crack consisting of yielded material), solo-crack brittle (very little damage zone development), and cooperative brittle (identified as a cloud of microcracks or crazes that developed at the notch tip). With a given applied stress and within the same failure mechanism, the values of the number of cycles to crack initiation decrease with increase in thickness. The transition from cooperative ductile to solo-crack brittle initiation mechanisms is sudden with increasing thickness. Transition from cooperative ductile to cooperative brittle with decreasing stress was less well defined. Regions where combinations of mechanisms were observed are also identified in the map. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: The techniques of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to examine the effects of the addition of various fillers and extenders (clay, pecan shell flour, and wheat flour) on the curing mechanism of a phenolformaldehyde resol. The DMTA results indicated that the curing process was unaffected by any of the additives. The DSC thermograms showed a single exothermic peak that was not influenced to a great extent by the fillers or extenders. Comparison of viscosity measurements and gel time determinations showed slight differences in the physical properties of the uncured resins.

    Notizen: A drawn PET yarn was heat set (annealed) at temperatures between 110°C and 245°C in an unconstrained mode and the samples characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). A method for estimating the fiber orientation factor (α) is proposed using DMA and shown to be more sensitive than the crystalline orientation (x-ray diffraction) or total orientation (birefringence) measurements of the heat set yarns. The extension/shrinkage behavior of the heat set yarns has been discussed in the light of morphological changes, e.g., degree of orientation and the micro-crystallite formation. Unlike in the unconstrained mode, heat setting under constraint does not lead to the formation of micro-crystallites as revealed by differential scanning calorimetry. As a consequence, although the modulus and degree of orientation increase upon constrained annealing, the thermal stability, i.e., loss of orientation (reflected by shrinkage) could not be improved.
