    Notes: The effects of crosslinking on cotton fabric are changed when the cotton has been chemically modified before crosslinking with an inert substituent, such as the methyl group. The main action of the inert substituent is to preserve swelling ability by hindering fiber deswelling after methylation and during crosslinking. At the levels of modification used, the crosslinking reaction appears to proceed normally, with no effects from reduction in the number of reactive cellulosic hydroxyl groups.

    Notes: The starch-polyacrylonitrile graft copolymer prepared from gelatinized wheat starch with ceric ammoninm nitrate as the initiator has been freed of ungrafted polyacrylonitrile and separated into fractions by extraction with dimethylformamide, γ-butyrolactone, and dimethyl sulfoxide. The copolymer fractions obtained differed appreciably in level of add-on, molecular weights of grafted chains, and grafting frequency. To determiue the molecular weights of grafted chains, the starch part of the copolymer was effectively removed by hydrolysis with α-amylase. It was necessary to dissolve or swell the polymer in dimethyl sulfoxide and freshly precipitate it by addition to water before enzymatic hydrolysis. In studying the effect of reaction medium on copolymer composition, there was less ungrafted homopolymer formed and a higher yield of graft copolymer possessing more frequent grafts with water than with aqueous dimethylformamide or aqueous ethylene glycol. Polymer solubility, the results of control polymerizations of acrylonitrile in the absence of starch, and the detection of glucose endgroups on the polyacrylonitrile liberated from the fractionated polymer by hydrolysis are presented as evidence that the copolymers obtained are true grafts rather thau intimate mixtures.

    Notes: A study was made of the influence of selected chain modifiers on both the molecular weight of grafted polyacrylonitrile and the grafting frequency of the starch-polyacrylo-nitrile graft copolymer. Gelatinized wheat starch was used with ceric ammonium nitrate as the initiator. The organic chain modifiers investigated were ethyl mercaptan, 1-dodecanethiol, methyl ethyl ketone, acetaldehyde, and chloroform. Sodium chromate, cupric bromide, cupric nitrate, cupric acetate, and cupric chloride were also tested as chain modifiers. In the presence of cupric chloride, there was a tenfold reduction in the molecular weight of grafted polyacrylonitrile; however, fewer chains were grafted to the starch backbone than were observed without cupric chloride.

    Notes: In the ceric ammonium nitrate-initiated graft polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) with starch, grafting frequencies and molecular weights of grafted polyacrylonitrile changed from 600 anhydroglucose units (AGU)/graft and 120000 to 280 AGU/graft and 36000 when concentrations of starch and AN were varied from 0.27 and 1.20 to 0.023 and 0.235 moles/l. of water, respectively. The influence of variety of starch, size of the starch granules, and reaction time was studied, and possible reasons for the influence of reactant concentration on the composition of the copolymer are considered.

    Notes: Polyacrylonitrile can be compression-molded with conventional equipment if the inherent polymer particle structure is modified. With normal polymerization methods, a circumferential orientation in the polymer particle is obtained. This structure can be changed under the effects of shear to yield highly ordered, laminar particles with planar orientations. In this form, PAN can be compression-molded into tough, clear, chemically resistant articles with retention of the laminar structure. The polymer has been characterized by its x-ray diffraction and infrared spectrum which, in combination, distinguish it from previously observed forms of PAN.

    Notes: Starch-polyacrylonitrile (S-PAN) graft copolymer consisting of one part starch and one part polyacrylonitrile (M. W. 794,000) was hydrolyzed with aqueous KOH at 80 and 100°C to polyelectrolytes containing carboxyl and amide functionality but void of infrared-detectable amounts of nitrile. Viscosities of potassium salts of the polyelectrolytes in water were pH dependent with peak viscosities at 8.5. These dispersions were characterized by unusually high viscosities, 15,000 to 26,500 cp at 1% concentration, and by the ability to retain significant viscosities, 300 to 950 cp, upon dilution to 0.03% concentrations. A 1% dispersion of hydrolyzed S-PAN had a viscosity of 5,000 cp in the presence of 8% KCl; however, the depressing effect of added salts on viscosity of aqueous dispersions of hydrolyzed S-PAN increases as the valence of the cation increases.

    Notes: The synthesis of two new ion-exchange membranes is presented. These are a partially sulfonated polystyrenesulfonic acid resin and an interpolymer system composed of sulfonated polystyrene-divinylbenzene polymerized within a poly(vinylidene fluoride) matrix. Each of these systems allows control of ion exchange capacity and physical properties over a wide range. The second is especially useful, in that ion-exchange capacity and swelling characteristics may be controlled independently. It also has the distinct advantage of giving a clear, flexible film even with high crosslinking. On the basis of certain simplifying assumptions an equation is derived which permits approximate calculation from equilibrium water uptake data of an elastic constant which measures the resistance of the membrane to swelling forces. Equilibrium water content data for the two membrane systems are treated with this equation and analyzed in terms of internal structure.

    Notes: The efficiency with which di-tert-butyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide vulcanize (crosslink) natural rubber depends on the type of natural rubber. Crosslinking efficiencies of the peroxides are increased by acetone extraction of the rubber and by increasing the concentration of peroxide but in no case studied was either peroxide 100% efficient. These findings indicate that the natural rubber samples contain non rubber compounds which compete with the rubber hydrocarbon for reaction with the peroxide. The implications of these findings are: (1) that the values of chemical crosslinks determined by Moore and Watson from the yields of tert-butyl alcohol and methane formed when an unextracted deproteinized pale crêpe is crosslinked with di-tert-butyl peroxide may be overestimated; and, thus, (2) the calibration of Mullins which relates the number of chemical crosslinks in a natural rubber-peroxide vulcanizate to the number of physically manifested crosslinks may require revision.

    Notes: Studies were carried out on the grafting of acrylonitrile (AN) and acrylamide (AA) to starch by ceric ion. The variables affecting the grafting of AN and AA were investigated with granular wheat starch dispersed in aqueous N,N-dimethylformamide and ceric ammonium nitrate as catalyst. Results showed that the concentrations of monomer and catalyst are the major factors influencing the grafting of AN; thus the monomer content of the grafts can be regulated by these variables. The grafting of AA is also influenced by these variables, but to a much less degree. Increasing concentrations of monomer promote homopolymerization and increasing concentration of catalyst inhibit grafting. The extent of grafting of this monomer can best be controlled by reaction time. Under the most favorable conditions, maximum grafting efficiency (ratio of amount of grafted monomer to total amount of monomer converted to polymer) was 87% for AN and 43.8% for AA. Although the monomer content of the AN grafts was higher than that of AA grafts prepared under identical conditions, the number of branches in the grafts was almost the same; only the length of the branches was different. The AN-starch grafts have branches of higher molecular weight.

    Notes: A study was made of the ceric ammonium nitrate-initiated graft polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) onto a number of modified starches that had been reduced in molecular weight by either acid, hypochlorite, or enzyme treatment. With highly soluble starches, much of the starting material was recovered as ungrafted carbohydrate, and the reaction product was largely dimethylformamide-soluble polymer with a high polyacrylonitrile (PAN) content. The molecular weight of grafted PAN was lower when the modified starches existed as granules in water dispersion; however, heating (60°C) an aqueous slurry of an acid-modified corn starch (with intact granules) before the reaction had relatively little effect on the composition of the copolymer. Decreasing the concentrations in water of modified starch and AN resulted in more frequent and lower molecular weight grafts of PAN. Aqueous methanol as a reaction medium for an acid-modified starch with intact granules led to more frequent grafting of lower molecular weight PAN than when water alone was used. The number of grafted chains, however, was fewer than found with unmodified wheat starch under comparable conditions. A modified starch with the granule structure completely broken down gave no detectable reaction in aqueous methanol.
