    Notes: The response of a continuous flow mixing system to a step change in an input variable is discussed from the standpoint of dimensional analysis. This idea is presented as an alternative to using zone models for predicting residence time distributions in systems where imperfect mixing occurs.Mixing experiments were performed in a cylindrical flat bottomed tank geometrically similar to tanks commonly used for industrial processes. The response of the system to a step change in feed concentration was observed. Initially the tank contained a salt solution. At the start of an experiment, a stream of salt-free diluent was introduced at the top of the tank and a stream of the salt solution was drained from the bottom, keeping the liquid volume in the tank constant. The salt concentration in the output stream was measured continuously after the start of the experiment.The experimental results are correlated in terms of dimensionless variables, and the variables affecting the mixing process most strongly are determined. The results show that variations in throughput rate or in impeller shape or rotational speed affect the mixing process much more than does impeller position. The data are also compared with models proposed by other authors, and the model constants are evaluated.

    Notes: The motion of simultaneously rising and growing vapor bubblesin a uniformly superheated liquid is analyzed, and the predicted bubble velocities are shown to be in good agreement with available data. Using a quasisteady state approximation to describe the drag, and existing bubble growth theory to describe the growth rate, the equation of motion is solved for two ranges of bubble size encountered in nucleate boiling. For smaller bubbles (R〈0.04 cm.) an analytical solution is obtained, and for larger bubbles (R〉0.07 cm.) a numerical solution and analytical asymptotic solutions are obtained.

    Notes: 3,3,3-Trichloropropylene oxide (TCPO) is a monomer which has the combination of a highly reactive epoxide group and a stable trichloromethyl group. The epoxy group will undergo ring opening polymerizations with itself and with a host of other compounds to yield polymeric materials. Water, alcohols, phenols, amines, carboxylic acids and many other compounds react with TCPO with the aid of Lewis acid type catalysts. The electron-withdrawing influence of the trichloromethyl group, steric effects and the oxirane ring have a strong influence on the course of reactions, which are often radically different from that encountered with the simpler alkylene oxide monomers.

    Notes: The mobilities of polymer chain segments in mixtures of rubber and carbon black were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance. Spin-spin relaxation time (T2) measurements on cis-polybutadiene and ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) bound rubbers detected at least two relaxing regions: an immobile region and a relatively free region. The molecular motions in the relatively free region are still constrained compared to those of the pure gum.

    Notes: Quantitative analyses of the products of thermal degradation of poly(ethyl acrylate), poly(n-propyl acrylate), poly(n-butyl acrylate) and poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) have been made, principally by the combined application of GLC and mass and infrared spectroscopy. Data are recorded in mass balance tables. The major gaseous products are carbon dioxide and the olefin corresponding to the ester group. The minor gaseous products include the corresponding alkane, the alkane/olefin ratio being of the order of 10-2-10-3, and traces of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The alcohol corresponding to the alkyl group is the major liquid product but there are also traces of monomer and the corresponding methacrylate. Alcohol production exhibits autocatalytic properties. The chain fragment fractions of the products are colored yellow and have average chain lengths of 3.2, 3.3, 3.6, and 5.6 for the ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl and 2-ethylhexyl esters, respectively. The infrared spectra are similar to those of the parent polymers but with well defined differences. Insolubility develops in the ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl esters, but the residual material from poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) remains soluble even at very advanced stages of degradation. All of these products and reaction characteristics are accounted for in terms of radical reactions with a unique initiation step.
