Notes: The fundamental vibrational frequencies of an isolated chain of cis-1,4-polybutadiene have been calculated. Infrared and polarized Raman data are used in the force constant refinement routine. The assignments of the vibrational frequencies are discussed in terms of the potential energy distribution.

Notes: Acrylonitrile (AN) was graft-polymerized onto gelatinized cationic starch (CS) possessing diethylaminoethyl ether groups by cerium (IV) initiation to give stable latexlike copolymer dispersions. Dispersions of the latex copolymers, having up to 50% grafted polyacrylonitrile (PAN), air- and heat-dry on glass to clear, adhesive films. Sonification of up to 8% dispersions at 20 Khz reduced their viscosities from 1500-3000 cP to 15-40 cP. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that both nonsonified and sonified dispersions consist of ball-like particles measuring about 0.05-0.15 μ in diameter when dry. The films are formed by coalescence of these particles. The degree to which AN grafts onto CS at ambient temperature is related to the nitrogen content of CS, gelatinization time of CS at 95°C, sequence of AN and cerium(IV) addition, concentration of cerium (IV), concentration of AN, and severity of reaction agitation. Number-average molecular weight values of PAN were about 106 when grafting was conducted under stirring and about 5 × 105 when conducted under shaking action.

Notes: Viscosity measurements made by a cone-plate viscometer on polyisobutylene in decalin solutions at different concentrations and their corresponding glass bead suspensions with filler loadings up to 40% by volume are reported. The range of shear rate $ \dot \gamma $ investigated is between 0.1 and 1000 sec-1. The solutions show shear-thinning behavior, and the relative viscosity ηr of the slurries generally decreases with increasing shear rate. The results indicate two different types of mechanism, respectively at high and low shear rates. At low $ \dot \gamma $, the relative viscosity can be correlated extending relations already well known for suspensions in Newtonian liquids which are based on the mechanism of aggregate disruption. The behavior at high $ \dot \gamma $ values is believed to be due to the influence of the filler on the flow properties of macromolecules, in particular on relaxation time. Through a shifting procedure, an increase in relaxation time which depends on filler content and not on polymer concentration is shown.

Notes: A cell model for the prediction of temperature and concentration gradients in a nonisothermal tubular polymerization reactor at steady state is presented. Both radial and longitudinal gradients are considered. The complete molecular weight distribution is calculated as well as the leading moments of the distribution. The model is easily reduced to predict the performance of a plug-flow tubular reactor, batch reactor, and continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The specific polymerization mechanism application consists of free-radical initiation, propagation, and combination termination.

Notes: A series of nonporous glasses and glass materials designed with controlled surface ion activities to allow chemical bonding to bone are described. Surface reactivities of these materials in vitro are correlated with biological activities in vivo and in tissue culture. Direct chemical bonding of the materials to bone is demonstrated. The mechanism for development of this bond is through the production of an amorphous ion surface gel on the bioglass. This gel induces osteogenesis by a chemotactic response of osteoblasts.

Notes: A polyelectrolyte synthesized from cis-1,4-polyisoprene, containing aminosulfonate and carboxylate groups was shown to have an anticoagulant activity of about 1/30 compared with heparin. Because the substance prevents the coagulation of plasma in the presence of thrombin it is assumed that it acts as an antithrombin.

Notes: A diffraction contrast study with the aid of an image intensifier was undertaken to obtain direct evidence for the existence of a mosaic block structure in polyethylene single crystals grown by self seeding under isothermal conditions. Dark-field microscopy indicates that the crystals do not contain a mosaic block structure. High-resolution electron diffraction confirms that the crystal is coherent (i.e., mosaic block-free) over regions of several thousands of Angstroms. It is concluded that a mosaic structure on the scale of ∼300 Å does not exist in polyethylene single crystals grown under carefully controlled conditions from dilute solutions. Possible reasons for previous results that indicate the presence of a ∼300 Å mosaic block structure are discussed.

Notes: The influence of the solvent-nonsolvent gradient and the temperature gradient on the efficiency of the precipitation chromatography is investigated with radically and anionically prepared polystyrene samples. Only a combination of both gradients gives optimal effectiveness of the column. The separating power of the column was determined by using mixtures of well defined samples. From the elution curves of the mixtures the nonuniformity Ufr of fractions can be estimated. For fractions of anionically prepared polystyrenes Ufr is on the average 0.001; this value is of the same order of magnitude as the statistical error. These results show that with this chromatographic method it is possible to determine the narrow molecular weight distributions of anionically prepared polystyrenes (or other polymers) with an accuracy sufficient for kinetic studies.

Notes: Molecular relaxation processes in the 77-260°K interval and the structure of polyethylene melt-crystallized under normal and high pressures have been studied. The positions of relaxation transitions and activation energy for molecular relaxation were determined by radiothermoluminescence. The most intense maximum in the glow curve of the sample crystallized under normal pressure is observed in the 200-240°K interval, i.e., in the range of the β transition. In this temperature interval the β relaxation activation energy changes from 15 to 25 kcal/mole. An increase of the pressure under which crystallization takes place results in a substantial decrease of the intensity of the β maximum. This indicates that the β transition of polyethylene is most probably due to the mobility of segments on the chain-folded lamellar surface. For samples melt-crystallized under pressure between 5000 and 7000 atm, relaxation transitions were found at 150 and 190°K. Various processes of molecular relaxation appear to be associated with the maxima observed on the polyethylene glow curve.
