Poly(ethylene oxide) dissolves a wide variety of inorganic salts and forms solid complexes with multiphase structures. The interaction between polymer chains and ions directs the morphology of the sample. The structure is very sensitive to the preparation methods and the purity of the materials. In this work the morphology of poly(ethylene oxide)-Ba(ClO4)2 complexes has been analysed. The effect of the salt concentration and the variations in the molar mass of the polymer was studied. The multiphase structures were investigated by infra-red spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy, 13C cross polarization and magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy, and wide angle X-ray scattering. Two different crystalline phases and changes in the amorphous phase were found for the complexes when the salt concentration was varied.
