    Description: The effects of shrimp culture on the adjacent water bodies over a crop cycle period were evaluated in the year 2005 by studying the water quality of inlet and outlet in two locations within Sayeh Khosh and Tiab area. A one way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis of the data comprising homogeneous subsets and multiple comparisons. We evaluated the variation of 10 parameters including temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, BOD5, total ammonia, nitrate, inorganic phosphorous, chlorophyll a, and total suspended solids (TSS).The variations were in the range 21P37.4°C for temperature, 8.12-8.36 for pH, 38-48ppt for salinity, 5.6-7.8mg11 for dissolved oxygen, 0.2ing5.7mgi1 for BOD5, 0.002-0.045mgil for total ammonia, 0.026s.0.275imill for nitrate, 0.001m0.042mgi1 for inorganic phosphorous, 0.11415n/1 for chlorophylls and 33474.2n/I for total suspended solids. The result of this study showed that salinity, BOD5, nitrate, total ammonium, inorganic phosphorous and total suspended solids in the outlet effluents and the receiving water in Tiab (stations 1,2) and Sayeh Khosh (stations 5,6) were higher than other sites (3, 4, 7 and 8) and statistical analysis of variance showed a significant difference between the sites (P〈0.05). The concentration of chlorophylls showed a decrease in the outlet effluents and receiving waters in Tiab and Sayeh Khosh areas.

    Description: In the present study, accumulation of manganese, cadmium, zinc, iron and copper in the commercially fish species (silver pomfret and tiger tooth croaker) caught from Bandarabbas coasts at 2010 was measured and the risk of daily intake of them in Hormozagan urban population was estimated. The average concentrations (µ/g dry weight) of manganese, cadmium, zinc, iron, and copper in the muscle tissue of silver pomfret were 1.248, 0.217, 14.444, 2.397 and 3.300, respectively, while the concentration of them in tiger tooth croaker were 1.009, 0.403, 12.564, 4.467 and 2.366, respectively. According to fish consumption rate, urban populations of the province were divided into four groups; low, medium, high and very high. The target hazard quotient (THQ) in each group calculated separately. The THQ of all groups were much lower than 1 in the two fish. The results showed that urban populations of the province have not any risk due to accumulation of the studied heavy metals.

    Description: This study aimed to investigate the quality of effluent water of a large shrimp farming complex in Chabahar region in Sistan and Baluchestan province (Iran). Fifteen sampling stations were designated in three distinct areas of these farms; i.e. the water supply canal, the drainage canal and the receiving area of the farm effluents in Gwatar Gulf. Water samples were taken from June to December 2004 for measurement and monitoring of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia compounds. The results revealed that the shrimp farms effluents have a profound effect on the water quality and aquatic environment of the drainage canal and the Gwatar Gulf. The average concentration of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia remained considerably higher in the drainage canal and Gwatar Gulf compared to the supply canal throughout the study. The amount of these compounds increased considerably in the drainage canal during the final stages of culture period and in Gwatar Gulf at post monsoon. The results of one way analysis of variance (at P〈0.01 level) showed that all physical and chemical factors except water temperature were significantly different between stations. Considering that more than 25% of the shrimp farms of this complex were active during this study the measured values of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia compounds in the effluents were at the optimum range recommended for the shrimp farms.

    Description: This study investigated the effects of increasing mercury (Hg) concentration on early developmental stages of sea urchin, Echinometra mathaei, as a bioindicator. The toxicity test was carried out after the gamete released induction and fertilization in six concentrations of mercury within the range of 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 µg/L. Embryos samples were incubated for 30 h in control and test solutions. After incubation, the percentage of developed 4-arm pluteus larvae was recorded in each group and embryonic abnormalities were studied by a microscope. Results of this study indicate that exposure of embryos to increasing mercury concentrations lead to abnormalities such as changes to shape and size of pluteus larval arms and also arrested development in early embryonic stages. Furthermore, embryos were analyzed to determine mercury absorption by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometry method (AAS). The median effective concentration (EC50) value calculated for mercury was 17/42 µg/L.
