Notes: Availabilities of O(3)H relative to O(2)H (that is, [O(3)H]a/[O(2)H]a) on accessible surfaces of microstructural units of cotton fibers were measured by chemical microstructural analysis (CMA). CMA involves a mild chemical reaction with N,N-diethylaziridinium chloride, determination of substituent distribution for this product and a corresponding product from decrystallized cellulose, and simple computations. Measurements for fibers in commercial cotton fabric, for field-dried fibers, and for never-dried fibers are reported. The [O(3)H]a/[O(2)H]a, an inverse measure of intact O(3)H ·· O(5′) bonds, decreased in the stated order; thus, intact O(3)H ·· O(5′) hydrogen bonding increased in this same order. Results indicate a high degree of order in intramolecular bonding in the never-dried fiber and an increasing disruption of this bonding as the never-dried fiber is dried and processed.

Notes: The relative availabilities of hydroxyl groups at C(2), C(3), and C(6) on the D-glucopyranosyl units of a particular, highly ordered hydrocellulose II have been studied by means of the reaction of N,N-diethylaziridinium chloride, which introduces 2-(diethyl-amino)ethyl substituents. The hydrocellulose II was formed by hydrolysis of fibrous cotton cellulose II during 40 min reflux in 2.5M hydrochloric acid and is designated EHC-II (exemplar hydrocellulose II) because it represents the most highly ordered (crystalline) particles in a series of hydrocelluloses. The deviation in the distribution of substituents among the 2-O-, 3-O-, and 6-O- positions of the D-glucopyranosyl units in EHC-II from that in a disordered cellulose, in which the three types of hydroxyl groups are equally available, is the basis for estimated availabilities of the three types of hydroxyl groups on the surfaces of elementary fibrils in EHC-II. The experimental values of relative availabilities of O(2)H:O(3)H:O(6)H for EHC-II were 1.0:0.26:0.72 compared to estimated values of 1.0:0.0:.075 for surfaces of elementary fibrils of an idealized, perfectly ordered cellulose II, a model that is based on intensities of x-ray diffraction peaks.

Notes: Torsional braid analysis was used to investigate the crosslinking behavior of linear quinoxaline polymers with and without reactive side groups. The kinetic parameter followed was the glass transition temperature during isothermal exposure in an inert atmosphere. With high molecular weight polyamide-quinoxaline copolymers (PPAQ), an initial decrease in Tg was observed during heat exposure which was followed by a subsequent increase in Tg. This was attributed to simultaneous chain scission and crosslinking reactions. Since the effect of random chain scission on the initial change in Tg of the highest molecular weight polymer samples is much stronger than on low molecular weight analogues, a Tg minimum was observed only on the highest molecular weight polymers. Because of the complexity of the reactions occurring one must consider the activation energies obtained from the Arrhenius plots as “apparent” activation energies. No attempt was made to elucidate the mechanisms of these reactions. It has been shown that isothermal heat exposure of high-temperature aromatic polymers in an inert atmosphere leads to crosslinking. In general, however, linear polymers that have reactive side groups such as methyl or carboxyphenyl groups along the polymer chain crosslink more rapidly than the analogs without these groups.

Notes: The synthesis of a series of regiospecifically substituted polyphenylacetylenes via sealed tube thermal polymerization has been accomplished. Measurement of their conductivities alone and in the presence of SO2, NH3, H2O, or dimethyl methylphosphonate vapors shows them to be extremely weakly conductive, contrary to previous reports. Higher conduction in these prior materials is thus attributed to the presence of ionic impurities arising from their method of synthesis. These results cast doubt on the suitability of such materials alone as chemical sensors but suggest that intentional incorporation of ionic species might be effective.

Notes: A method for the theoretical analysis of branching in radical polymerization is presented which includes the dynamics of the process. In particular, the method is applied to a polymerization that occurs by decomposition of initiator, propagation, termination by radical combination, and chain transfer with polymer. By a numerical solution of the kinetic equations (suitably transformed), the time dependence of the number-average degree of polymerization (DP), the weight-average DP, the mean number of branches, and the monomer conversion are obtained. The parameters of the process, that is the rate coefficients and initial concentrations, have the following effects: (1) An increase in the chain transfer coefficient increases the ratio of weight-average to number-average Xw/Xn and the mean number of branches Xb, but does not change the number-average Xn. (2) For a given value of the chain transfer coefficient, a change in the parameters of the process such that Xn increases, causes Xw/Xn and Xb to increase also. (3) Chain transfer with polymer seems to produce relatively few polymer molecules having many branches and a large number of smaller polymer molecules having no branches; consequently, the polymer size (or molecular weight) distribution broadens.

Notes: The mobilities of polymer chain segments in mixtures of rubber and carbon black were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance. Spin-spin relaxation time (T2) measurements on cis-polybutadiene and ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM) bound rubbers detected at least two relaxing regions: an immobile region and a relatively free region. The molecular motions in the relatively free region are still constrained compared to those of the pure gum.
