Notes: Abstract The crystal and electronic structure of solidC 76 has been studied using transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy in transmission. C76 forms a close packed structure with an average facecentred cubic symmetry. From valence band and core electron excitations information on the dielectric function and the unoccupied density of states has been obtained.

Notes: A simple differential, isothermal calorimeter has been built to study the thermodynamics of interactions associated with a variety of polymer solution processes. The calorimeter is readily operated at temperatures ranging from ambient to about 200°C., temperature adjustments are rapid, and the apparatus is rugged enough to permit application to commercial process studies. Though less sensitive than microcalorimeters, it represents an attractive combination of satisfactory accuracy, speed, and flexibility of operation. The operation of the calorimeter is demonstrated by measurements of the heat of solution of sodium chloride in water and the heats of solution of various polyolefins in Tetralin and α-chloronaphthalene. The latter tend to confirm the presence of polymer aggregates in chloronaphthalene solutions below the thermodynamic melting temperature of the polymer.

Notes: The influence of aluminum borate whiskers upon the morphology of polyamide 6 was studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering and by differential scanning calorimetry. The whiskers did not promote the formation of either the hexagonal γ or the monoclinic β crystalline phase. A new experimental procedure has been devised for the production of very thin polymer layers on the whiskers. In the procedure, styrene co-acrylonitrile polymer is used as a processing aid and is later extracted. The procedure allows for the generation of polyamide layers less than 30 nm thick. Crystallinity in these thin layers was suppressed. An expression has been developed to characterize the crystallinity gradient in the interphase of the whisker surface. The equation shows that the initial 1.4 nm of polymer is fully amorphous and produces excellent evaluations of the crystallinity gradient to layer thicknesses of 70 nm. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Thermodynamic interaction parameters have been calculated from gas-liquid chromatographic measurements for linear and branched polyethylene interacting with selected hydrocarbons. The values of the interaction parameter χ are substantial in spite of chemical similarities between the polymer and low molecular weight hydrocarbon species, a fact attributed to significant differences in the respective thermal expansion coefficients. A systematic increase of χ is observed in going from branched to linear polyethylene systems. The thermal expansion coefficients of these polymer homologs therefore may not be identical. The present χ values differ substantially from those reported in earlier literature. The comparison confirms suspicions that some older data, based on equilibrium sorption experiments, were erroneously low because of an underestimate in the reduced melting temperature of polymer in the presence of excess solvent.
