Notes: Different crystal structure models have been proposed for atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) by two groups: Bunn and Sakurada et al. The models differ principally in the azimuthal angle of the planar zigzag backbone and the hydrogen bonding network. In the present study, reexamination of the crystal structure analysis was carried out by using both the X-ray and neutron diffraction methods. The crystal structure model proposed by Bunn is found to be superior. The (Fo - Fc) synthesis was made for the neutron data (100 K), in which the hydrogen atoms to be associated with the hydrogen bonds are not incorporated into Fc calculation. On the map, three peaks were found, which may be attributed to the hydrogen atoms to be associated with the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between OH groups in an isotactic sequence and the two kinds of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: p-Styrenesulfonate esters of primary and secondary perfume alcohols and phenols, including citronellol, 1-menthol, borneol, β-phenethyl alcohol, eugenol, p-anisyl alcohol, cinnamyl alcohol, and geraniol, and herbicide alcohols such as 2,4-dichloro- and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy-ethanols were synthesized using p-styrenesulfonyl chloride in the presence of bases such as pyridine, triethylamine, sodium hydrogen carbonate, and sodium hydride. The hydrolytic behavior of sulfonate ester monomers and their copolymers with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone to liberate perfume and herbicide alcohols was structure-dependent, thereby affording chemical release control.

Notes: A kinetic study has been made of polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by an electron donor-acceptor complex of liquid SO2 (electron acceptor) and nicotine (donor) in the presence of carbon tetrachloride. It is concluded that the polymerization proceeds through free-radical intermediates similar to the cases of liquid SO2-pyridine and liquid SO2-poly(2-vinylpyridine) complexes. The overall rate of polymerization is proportional to the square root of both liquid SO2 and nicotine concentrations, and the values of kp/kt½ under various polymerization conditions are in satisfactory agreement with the literature values. For the activation energy of initiation, 13.6 kcal/mole is estimated from the kp/kt½ values obtained at temperatures ranging from 0 to 80°C.

Notes: Crown ether-modified polyethylenimines (PEI-CR) were prepared to elucidate their cation binding efficiency and selectivity by liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extraction methods. With alkali metal cations it was found that polyethylenimines containing benzo-15-crown-5 moieties (Ia and Ib) extracted all cations examined more efficiently than their monomeric analogs, especially in the cases of K+ and Rb+ cations. The solid-liquid extraction revealed clearly that the polymers complexed with K+ and Rb+ cations according to a 1:2 cation-to-crown stoichiometry. The high selectivities of the polymers for K+ and Rb+ were interpreted in terms of the favourable conformation of the polymer chain for the formation of intramolecular 1:2 complexes. On the contrary, these polymers bound alkali earth cations less effectively with low selectivities.

Notes: Poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) of high molecular weight was obtained when the polycondensation of terephthalic acid and p-phenylenediamine was carried out in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) that contained dissolved CaCl2 and LiCl in the presence of pyridine. The molecular weight of the polymer obtained varied with the amount of pyridine relative to the metal salts and with the molar ratios of CaCl2 to LiCl, the maximum ηinh value of 4.5 being obtained under the conditions Py/(CaCl2 + LiCl) ≈ 2.5 (mol/mol), CaCl2/LiCl ≈ 1.2 (mol/mol), and LiCl + CaCl2 ≈ 4 g. Among the solvents tested, NMP was significantly effective for the reaction. Polycondensations of several combinations of other dicarboxylic acids and diamines were carried out with limited success.

Notes: A new crystal modification was found in poly(ethylene oxide) stretched about two-fold after necking at room temperature. An x-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the planar zigzag molecule passes through a triclinic unit cell with parameters α = 4.71 Å, b = 4.44 Å, c (fiber axis) = 7.12 Å, α = 62.8°, β = 93.2°, and γ = 111.4°. The space group is P1-Ci1. Packing of the molecule is very similar to that of monoclinic polyethylene.

Notes: The electron density of the polyoxymethylene molecule was calculated in cylindrical coordinates by a newly derived Fourier method. The density due to hydrogen could be obtained in addition to that from carbon and oxygen. This method is generally applicable to a helical polymer whose unit cell contains only one molecule composed of a number of chemical repeat units in the fiber identity period.

Notes: The crystal structure of the β form of poly(ethylene oxybenzoate) was analyzed by x-ray diffraction. Four nearly extended molecular chains pass through a unit cell with parameters a = 8.19 Å, b = 11.07 Å, c (fiber axis) = 19.05 Å, β = 114.8°, and the space group P21/n-C2h5. The structural difference between the α and β forms is mainly due to the internal rotation angles for the virtual bond and the —CH2—CH2— bond. They are essentially in trans confirmation in the β form, while the α form contains cis and gauche (—CH2—CH2—) conformations.

Notes: Least-squares refinement of the molecular structure of polyoxymethylene was carried out by using intensity data measured with an automatic four-circle diffractometer. The discrepancy factor was improved to 4.1% by using the anisotropic temperature factor. Physically significant values were obtained for the bond length, bond angles, and internal rotation angle: C—O = 1.429 ± 0.008 Å, ∠COC = 112.9 ± 0.6°, ∠OCO = 110.4 ± 0.8°, and τ(C—O) = 77.0 ± 0.3°. Samples for x-ray diffraction measurements were prepared by solid state polymerization of a tetroxocane single crystal.

Notes: Three crystal modifications of poly(3,3-dimethyloxacyclobutane) [—CH2C(CH3)2CH2O—]n were found and their structures were analyzed by x-ray diffraction. Modification I is obtained only under tension and disappears on relaxing the tension. From the fiber period of 4.83 Å, the molecular structure seems to be planar zigzag. In modification II, two chains in T3GT3Ḡ conformation pass through a monoclinic cell with parameters a = 8.93 Å, b = 7.48 Å, c (fiber axis) = 8.35 Å, β = 97.9°, and the space group P21/c-C52h. In modification III, two (T2G2)2 chains pass through an orthorhombic cell with parameters a = 15.60 Å, b = 5.74 Å, c (fiber axis) = 6.51 Å, and the space group, C2221-D52. Molecular conformations of the three crystal modifications correspond to those of polyoxacyclobutane.
