    Notes: Proton spin-spin relaxation times and the Weibull coefficient have been measured as functions of temperature for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) drawn at 50°C in both the amorphous and the semicrystalline (50%) states. Two relaxation times T2a (long) and T2c (short) are observed for all samples. They are ascribed, respectively, to the relaxation of the amorphous and of the crystalline components including highly strained noncrystalline segments. Effects of initial morphology are found for chain mobility in the noncrystalline regions and for the crystal perfection, evaluated from T2a and the Weibull coefficient μc of the T2c-component, respectively. For all draw ratios, T2a for extrudates prepared from the semicrystalline polymer (C-50) is short compared to that for preparations from the amorphous (A-50) polymer. In the A-50 samples, the perfection of stress-induced crystals increase with increasing draw ratio. In the C-50 samples, the crystal orientation increases, whereas the perfection decreases with increasing draw ratio. To improve the crystal perfection, annealing at higher temperature or longer time is required for C-50 as compared with A-50. The value of μc correlates well with the change in crystal perfection during deformation and annealing.

    Notes: The effects of drawing temperature on the physical and mechanical properties of poly(p-phenylene sulfide) have been studied. A melt-quenched film was drawn by solid-state coextrusion both below (75°C) and above (95 and 110°C) the glass transition temperature Tg (85°C) of PPS. The maximum extrusion draw ratio (EDRmax) increased from 3.4 to 5.6 with increasing extrusion temperature Te from 75 to 110°C. It was found that extrusion drawing just above the Tg of PPS (95°C) produced more stress-induced crystals. A high efficiency of draw in the amorphous region was achieved by extrusion at Te-75°C. The tensile modulus at EDRmax decreased from 5.1 to 3.5 GPa with increasing Te from 75 to 110°C. The low efficiency of draw for the samples extruded at 110°C is explained in terms of disentanglement and chain slippage during drawing due to a less effective network.

    Notes: Subunits of immunoglobulins have been prepared by two methods, both of which have contributed to our knowledge of the structural basis of antibody specificity. The first method is enzymic hydrolysis with either papain or pepsin and leads to the unequivocal conclusion that each combining site is contained in a fragment (Fab) of about 45,000 molecular weight and formed from the light chain and the N-terminal half of the heavy chain, the Fd fragment. The second method of preparing subunits is to reduce the interchain disulfide bonds and to isolate the chains. This should decide whether the combining site is in the Fd fragment, the light chain, or is formed jointly by both. In fact, considerable loss of affinity for the antigen follows, whatever technique is used to dissociate the peptide chains and, although many papers have been published on this subject, no definite answer has yet been obtained. Although the majority opinion probably favors the view that both chains are concerned in the formation of the combining site, our tentative conclusion is that the site is placed entirely in the heavy chain and that the light chain has only a semispecific role in facilitating the reformation of the native configuration of the heavy chain after its disruption under the conditions necessary for dissociation of the two chains.

    Notes: A high-resolution proton magnetic resonance compositional analysis has been developed for propylene polymers containing 0-40 wt.-% ethylene as either homopolymer or copolymer blocks. The test is independent of tacticity and provides qualitative information on copolymer sequencing and propylene chain structure. The analysis was developed using a series of standard reference polymers synthesized to contain various ratios of C14-tagged ethylene and propylene. The compositional standards were established by radiotracer analysis for C14 and by preparing weighed physical mixtures of homopolymers. Spectra were obtained at 200 ± 10°C. by placing externally heated polymer solutions into a conventional probe of a Varian A-60 proton spectrometer. All measurements were made on ± 10% polymer solutions in diphenyl ether. Analyses are accurate to about ± 10% at higher ethylene concentrations. The method is sensitive, with less precision, to below 1% for ethylene either as blocks or homopolymer.

    Notes: Column systems for gel permeation chromatography are usually calibrated by eluting a series of sharp polymer fractions of known molecular weights and by correlating their elution volumes with molecular size or weight. A different method for calibration is proposed in which only one polymer sample, with a broad, well-characterized molecular weight distribution, is used. The cumulative distribution and the integrated, normalized GPC chromatogram are successively superimposed, and molecular weights and corresponding elution volumes are correlated. It is found that calibration curves obtained in this manner show a definite curvature. A possible explanation and correction for this behavior is given, based on the concentration dependence of elution volumes.

    Notes: A series of polyisobutene and polystyrene fractions was subjected to gel-permeation chromatography at 150°C. The two types resulted in distinctly different calibration curves in a plot of projected, extended chain length versus elution volume. The average end-to-end distances of the samples were determined by intrinsic viscosity measurements. It was found that these data plotted versus elution volume could be represented by a common curve for both polymer types. The elution volumes of the polyisobutene series were determined at three additional temperatures, 35, 70, and 110°C. It could be shown that elution volume is again determined by polymer coil size at the temperature of measurement.
