    Notes: The electronic structure of a clean copolymer of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene is investigated by measuring the ESCA spectra of the core and valence levels. The chemical composition and alternating (〉95%) structure of the copolymer, characterized separately by classical methods, is verified by analyzing the C 1s core-level spectrum. The comparison of the experimental valence band with an original EHCO band-structure calculation, and with similar data for a model of polymer with block structure, shows that the combined methods allow us to distinguish between the two compounds through their valence-band spectra.

    Notes: A multiordering parameter model for glass-transition phenomena has been developed on the basis of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. In this treatment the state of the glass is determined by the values of N ordering parameters in addition to T and P; the departure from equilibrium is partitioned among the various ordering parameters, each of which is associated with a unique retardation time. These times are assumed to depend on T, P, and on the instantaneous state of the system characterized by its overall departure from equilibrium, giving rise to the well-known nonlinear effects observed in volume and enthalpy recovery. The contribution of each ordering parameter to the departure and the associated retardation times define the fundamental distribution function (the structural retardation spectrum) of the system or, equivalently, its fundamental material response function. These, together with a few experimentally measurable material constants, completely define the recovery behavior of the system when subjected to any thermal treatment. The behavior of the model is explored for various classes of thermal histories of increasing complexity, in order to simulate real experimental situations. The relevant calculations are based on a discrete retardation spectrum, extending over four time decades, and on reasonable values of the relevant material constants in order to imitate the behavior of polymer glasses. The model clearly separates the contribution of the retardation spectrum from the temperature-structure dependence of the retardation times which controls its shifts along the experimental time scale. This is achieved by using the natural time scale of the system which eliminates all the nonlinear effects, thus reducing the response function to the Boltzmann superposition equation, similar to that encountered in the linear viscoelasticity. As a consequence, the system obeys a rate (time) -temperature reduction rule which provides for generalization within each class of thermal treatment. Thus the model establishes a rational basis for comparing theory with experiment, and also various kinds of experiments between themselves. The analysis further predicts interesting features, some of which have often been overlooked. Among these are the impossibility of extraction of the spectrum (or response function) from experiments involving cooling from high temperatures at finite rate; and the appearance of two peaks in the expansion coefficient, or heat capacity, during the heating stage of three-step thermal cycles starting at high temperatures. Finally, the theory also provides a rationale for interpreting the time dependence of mechanical or other structure-sensitive properties of glasses as well as for predicting their long-range behavior.

    Notes: The synthesis of 3-methyl-3-butyl-2-azetidinone, which forms a polymer which is soluble in a number of common solvents including toluene, chloroform, and carbon tetrachloride, is described. Anionic polymerization, carried out in toluene solution in a calorimetric vessel, yielded for the heat of polymerization of a four-membered lactam -19.1 kcal/mole at 25°C.

    Notes: A sample of polystyrene with narrow molecular weight distribution (M̄w/M̄n = 1.03) has been formed into a 3-mm sheet and subjected to γ-irradiation at 25°C in air. Simultaneous crosslinking and scission of polymer chains resulted. Analyses by velocity and equilibrium sedimentation, gelpermeation chromatography, and osmometry of the polystyrene subjected to doses in the range 0-90 Mrad, all within the pre-gel region, have yielded average values of G(S) = G(X) = 0.022 ± 0.002 for the complete sample. Combination of these various experimental techniques has been successful in yielding consistent values of G(S) and G(X) and should be applicable with advantage to other polymers, particularly when neither G(S) nor G(X) is zero. The wide variation in literature values of G(S) and G(X) for irradiation of polystyrene under vacuum precludes any unequivocal conclusion on the effect of air on the radiation yields.

    Notes: The preparation of poly(butadiene-g-α-methylstyrene) copolymers was investigated with three different alkylaluminum coinitiators. The alkylaluminum compounds in conjunction with polybutadiene which contained a low concentration of labile chlorine atoms initiated the polymerization of α-methylstyrene to produce graft copolymers. Trimethylaluminum gave higher grafting efficiencies than diethylaluminum chloride at comparable monomer conversions. Triethylaluminum produced only very low monomer conversions (〈5%), even at long reaction times, and for this reason was not studied extensively. The number of grafts per polybutadiene backbone was determined for a number of copolymers and found to increase slightly as the allylic chlorine concentration in the polybutadiene backbone was increased. In all cases, however, only a low percentage of the available labile chlorine sites along the polybutadiene backbone resulted in grafted α-methylstyrene side chains. The addition of small quantities of water to the polymerization solvent greatly enhanced the grafting rate and ultimate monomer conversion during the synthesis of these poly(butadiene-g-α-methylstyrene) copolymers. The mechanistic role of water during these grafting reactions is unknown at the present time.

    Notes: Nylon 46 was synthesized from the salt of 1,4-diaminobutane and adipic acid. High molecular weight polymers could be obtained by reaction for 1 hr at 215°C in a closed system and at least for 1 hr in vacuo at a temperature in the range 290-305°C. The reactions at 290°C were found to have taken place in the solid state and those at 305°C in the melt. The highest molecular weights (M̄w ca. 45,000) were obtained by reaction at 290°C with a nylon salt with a pH of 7.8-8.0. The molecular weight characteristics were studied with end-group analysis, viscometry, light scattering, and ultracentrifugation. The polymers were found to be gel-free and monodisperse (M̄w/M̄n ∼ 1.15). Films could be cast from formic acid. From x-ray diffraction patterns, measured on such films, spacings of 3.74 and 4.30 Å were calculated, whereas a long period of 66 Å was also found. The infrared spectra showed all the usual amide bands of even-even polyamides. The melting temperature was found to vary between 283 and 319°C, depending on the thermal history of the sample. Water absorption measured on a cast film showed this to be very hygroscopic (7.5% at 65% RH), while a highly crystalline sample absorbed only little water (1.6% at 65% RH).

    Notes: The polymerization of N-ethyl-2-vinylcarbazole and N-ethyl-3-vinylcarbazole by an anionic mechanism has been demonstrated. Polymerization reactions were monitored by ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and λmax and ε values for the propagating carbanions determined. The 2-vinyl monomer exhibits all the features of a standard “living” polymer; the carbanion is stable at ambient temperatures and high molecular weight, M̄n ≃ 106, narrow distribution polymers and block copolymers with styrene have been prepared. The carbanion from the 3-vinyl monomer is much less stable and a clean polymerization can only be conducted at temperatures below -60°C. A comparison of the anionic polymerization characteristics of the N-, 2-, and 3-vinyl carbazole monomer series is presented.

    Notes: Heats of mixing of methanol with butyl isobutyrate and with oligomers of butyl methacrylate (monomer to tetramer) having a butoxyl group on one chain end have been measured. To discuss the effect of hydrogen bonding on the heat values, it is appropriate to correlate the heat per mole of binding sites with the binding site fraction. This dependence can be described by a single curve for all oligomers studied, in contrast to the results obtained in a previous paper for the same oligomers with chloroform. This fact suggests that the binding parameters for methanol are not influenced by the degree of polymerization.

    Notes: The structure of isotactic poly(2-vinylpyridine) has been determined from x-ray fiber data utilizing rigid-body least-squares refinement techniques. The polymer exists as a threefold helix with three chains passing through a hexagonal unit cell having the dimensions a = b = 15.49 Å and c = 6.56 Å (fiber axis) and space group P31 or P32. The asymmetric unit consists of three monomeric units (one in each chain), resulting in three crystallographically independent chains in the unit cell. The results show that two of the chains are interlocked through pyridine ring interactions whereas the third chain is less restricted. A statistical structure is proposed in which any two chains in the unit cell can be interlocked, provided they have the same sense. Such a situation permits a completely statistical structure in which half the chains in any crystallite are oriented upward and the other half downward.
